Nikita Haikin was not impressed with Viking’s behavior during its 3-3 draw against Bayern Munich, with the Bodø/Glimt goalkeeper questioning the sportsmanship displayed by their Norwegian rivals despite their impressive result against Vincent Kompany’s side.
Viking managed to take a point against Bayern Munich in a 3-3 draw, but Haikin believes the manner in which they approached the game deserves scrutiny, particularly given the example professional footballers set for younger supporters.
> “First of all, earning a point is impressive. They played against the best team in the world, in my opinion. But I think we have to remember that, first and foremost, we are athletes, right? And there are a lot of young people watching us, and there were many moments yesterday that, for me were unacceptable. We have to respect one another; we have to show respect. I don’t support that,” Haikin told Nettavisen (via @iMiaSanMia ).
When asked whether he would have resorted to similar antics to secure a result against Bayern Munich, Haikin firmly rejected the suggestion.
> “No. For me, it’s unacceptable. So, yes, it finished 3-3, one point — congratulations to them. But it was one point, not a win. We have to remember that, too,” Haikin added.
Haikin’s comments add another layer to the debate surrounding Bayern’s frustrating draw. While Viking deserve credit for fighting back and taking a point against one of Europe’s strongest sides, their conduct clearly left an impression on the Bodø/Glimt goalkeeper.
From Bayern Munich’s perspective, the result was two points dropped, regardless of the controversy.
