Michael Olise has single-handedly won games over the course of his Bayern Munich career but tonight, he cost his side the game.
Olise produced a moment of senselessness in the 74th minute. The Frenchman, who was already shown a yellow card, let frustration get the better of him. He threw the ball into a Viking FK player’s face after committing a needless foul.
Before Olise’s blunder, Bayern were in the driver’s seat, clawing back three goals after facing a 2-0 deficit going into half time. All the Bavarians needed to do was keep their cool. However, the Frenchman’s head loss and subsequent dismissal shifted the momentum entirely into Viking’s favour. Bayern paid the price, conceding a late goal to lose their hard-fought lead.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was particularly upset with Olise and did not mince his words when speaking about his mistake.
> “Michael is a player who will always be provoked by opponents, but that’s not an excuse,” began Kompany in a post-match interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia ). “It’s 100% his fault. He knows it as well. You can’t say you deserve to win the game when you make individual decisions like that, even though I thought we didn’t play a bad game. We didn’t deserve to win because we made mistakes that cannot happen”
It is unfortunate that Olise’s actions had such a dire consequence to the game’s outcome, especially after Bayern battled so hard to overturn the two-goal deficit. But actions have consequences, and the Frenchman learned that lesson the hard way against Viking.
