Paul Scholes slams former Man Utd teammates with strong response to Man City’s guilty verdict

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes appears to have taken a pop at some of his former Red Devil teammates this week, with a strong response to Manchester City's guilty verdict.

The Premier League had claimed United's noisy neighbours had breached 115 financial fair play laws more than two years ago, and an independent commission found them guilty of every single charge last week.

Among the biggest charges they face is in relation to 'sham' sponsorships, which meant the UAE-owned club were able to inflate their actual revenue by more than £800 million.

While Man City have since lodged an appeal , there is already talk around the severity of punishments they face - which include being stripped of their titles and expelled from the English football pyramid.

In the event that City are stripped of their titles, harming many legacies in the process, then it remains to be seen whether those competitions will be null and voided or whether other clubs will be given their honours.

That's where Scholes' issues with some former teammates lie. While Wayne Rooney was among those to say he wouldn't accept any retrospective winners' medals, the Ginger Prince posted to his Instagram story:

> "Keep hearing ex-teammates say they want trophies taken off them, but they don't want their medals... f that, I'm a greedy b, I want my medal."

Several teams could win belated league titles with Man City found guilty over their 115 charges, but Mikel Arteta’s men still wouldn’t get a trophy.

Should second-placed sides be awarded the titles instead of Man City, the Red Devils would be handed three additional honours (2012, 2018 and 2021). But even that wouldn’t be enough to move them ahead of Liverpool in the race to become England’s most successful club, as Jurgen Klopp’s Reds would also be in line for three extra titles.

Arsenal, meanwhile, could also benefit from two more titles, in 2023 and 2024. However, there’s a slight wrinkle here, given that those triumphs came after Man City’s alleged breach period between 2009 and 2018.

If the FA got involved and decided that Man City were not only going to be stripped of their Premier League titles but also their other domestic wins, then few lesser clubs could have enjoyed some truly magical days out in the FA Cup.

In 2010/11, Man City won their first honour of the era, beating Stoke City 1-0 in the final. They could be in line for a historic FA Cup, as would Watford, who were thumped 6-0 in the 2018/19 season.

Meanwhile, Man United and Chelsea were the other two sides to lose to the Cityzens at Wembley Stadium.

In total, seven League Cups could be given new owners. Sunderland, Aston Villa, and Tottenham each made the final but lost out to Roberto Mancini and Pep Guardiola's winning machine. Meanwhile, Chelsea and Liverpool also would deserve one extra honour, while Arsenal would notch two.
