Nobody is Talking About Mason Mount Being Man Utd's Worst Signing Since Sancho
· GiveMeSport
The Manchester United star has been nowhere near good enough
Manchester United are in a serious trough right now, with Wednesday night's 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como a new low after a disappointing start to the season.
Man United needed a positive result against the Serie A outfit after losing their second Champions League match of the group campaign against Atletico Madrid a week earlier, but they conceded after two minutes and then never looked likely getting the result they wanted to.
A number of Red Devils stars are playing nowhere near the levels they were at last term, not least the 2025-26 PFA Players' Player of the Year, Bruno Fernandes .
United have now gone seven games without a win, and their captain is without a goal contribution during that time too, having broken the record for most assists in a Premier League season last time out.
The Portugal international isn't the only one though, with the majority of his teammates also playing below what they were during the second half of the 2025-26 campaign.
The run of form has led to speculation over Carrick''s future, but while the club are considering their options if they are forced to sack the 45-year-old in the coming weeks, according to GIVEMESPORT sources, he will be in the dugout when they host Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The likes of Fabian Hurzeler, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have their admirers among the Red Devils' hierarchy, although the former has no intention of leaving Brighton and Hove Albion right now.
United's recruitment has come under fire on many occasions over the last few years, not least for the £73m signing of Jadon Sancho in 2021.
Sancho for Man United
- Appearances: 83 - Starts: 56 - Goals: 12 - Assists: 6 - Price per goal: £6.08m
Huge things were expected of the winger after his form for Borussia Dortmund, but he ended up being a massive flop and was released at the end of his five-year contract this summer.
There have been some bad additions since, including Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Antony, but Mason Mount is establishing himself as their worst signing since Sancho.
Eyebrows were raised when Mount made the move from Chelsea to Old Trafford in a deal worth £55m in the summer of 2023, and there was hope among United fans that he would go on to have a big impact in terms of goal contributions.
Instead, more than three years after he signed for the club, the 27-year-old has registered just two assists in 78 appearances in all competitions, with neither of those being in the Premier League.
Mount at Man United
- Injuries: 11 - Days out: 407 - Games missed: 71
Having played in a deeper midfield role through pre-season, Mount was handed his second start of the campaign in midfield against Como, and he failed to impress on a miserable night for the club.
The Englishman has struggled with injury throughout his time at Old Trafford, which has impacted his availability and ability to hold down a regular spot in the XI, and he now has just over 18 months left on his contract.
Based on what we've seen from his three years in a red shirt, it's difficult to see him getting a contract extension, and if United want to try and recoup any money for him to avoid losing him for free, then they will need to put him up for sale in 2027.
The fact he is reportedly earning £250,000-a-week , and wears the famous No.7 shirt, only further strengthen the argument that he is their worst signing since Sancho, given most matches he plays in, he fails to make an impact.
