Ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett speaks out amid reports Manchester United vs Bournemouth may not go ahead

Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has provided details amid reports that Manchester United vs Bournemouth is one of this weekend’s Premier League fixtures at risk of being postponed.

United boss Michael Carrick is currently fighting to save his job as head coach following a poor start to the 2026-27 season.

The Red Devils have won just two of their first 11 games this term: a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town in the Premier League on August 30, followed by a 4-0 victory over Sabah in the Champions League 11 days later.

United, who sit 13th in the Premier League table, suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat away at Como in the Champions League on Wednesday evening - a result the beleaguered Carrick described as “unacceptable”.

Speculation is rife that United are sounding out various managers as potential replacements for Carrick, who was initially handed the job on an interim basis after Ruben Amorim was sacked in January.

However, Carrick will be in charge of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth - if it goes ahead.

A weather warning has been issued for Greater Manchester this weekend, with Storm Boelo set to bring “very windy and wet” weather to the north of the United Kingdom.

Per the Manchester Evening News , the Met Office has issued a yellow wind alert affecting the whole of the north of the UK from 12pm Saturday (October 24) until 9pm Sunday (October 25).

The 33-hour wind warning includes north-east England, north-west England, Yorkshire and Scotland.

> "The strongest winds from Storm Boelo are expected from Saturday evening and extend eastwards through Sunday,” the Met Office warning reads.

> "Very strong westerly winds associated with Storm Boelo are expected with fairly widespread gusts of 60 to 70 mph and gusts to 80 mph in exposed coastal areas.”

Merseyside is another location poised to be impacted by the adverse weather conditions, which also leaves Sunday’s Premier League clash between Liverpool and Brighton at risk of being postponed at short notice.

Ex-FIFA referee Hackett, who previously led the PGMOL (now Pro Ref), has told Football Insider that officials will be keeping a close eye on the conditions in the north of England before Sunday’s fixtures.

With the Met Office advising the strong winds could lead to flying debris and damage to infrastructure, potentially causing significant delays to those planning on travelling to this weekend’s games, Hackett explained:

> "The elite level will liaise with the police and the media so that if the game is unable to go ahead spectators will be informed.

> "The club will not want food waste and will have to advise all catering staff and security staff etc. A lot of people are involved. The police will be aware of all the travel arrangements of teams and spectators.

> "This is where the referee earns his money. He will be in the city overnight with club officials. Everyone will want to avoid a late call off with spectators in the vicinity of the ground."

As well as Manchester United vs Bournemouth and Liverpool vs Brighton, Hull City vs Brentford (Sunday 2pm) and Sunderland vs Leeds United (Sunday 4:30pm) will also take place under the yellow weather warning.
