Leeds Have Next Archie Gray In Academy With Samuel Alker
· GiveMeSport
Discover how Leeds is nurturing Sam Alker, their potential next star like Archie Gray, for future success.
Leeds could have their next Archie Gray sitting in their academy after what has happened this week.
Leeds' development of Gray is a prime example of how effective academies can be. The young midfielder came through the Leeds academy and developed into a first-team player before they sold him for a huge fee to Tottenham.
Although the Yorkshire club would have likely wanted to see Gray continue playing for the club, the fee they received will help fund their academy for many years.
Leeds will now be hoping to continue to develop players capable of bringing in huge fees or playing for the senior squad.
If they can find the next Gray in the pipeline of their academy, it could benefit Leeds from a financial or playing perspective in the future.
The next Gray could be another young midfielder in Sam Alker. The 17-year-old recently signed a two-year deal at Elland Road, which was his first professional contract with the club.
Alker is clearly incredibly highly rated, not just at Leeds but also in the world of football. The Leeds youngster was also named in England's U18 squad for their UEFA Friendship Cup campaign in Switzerland this month.
Alker came off the bench to help England secure a 3-0 victory over Colombia in their opening game, making his debut just two months after signing his first professional contract.
Like Gray, Alker is also a midfielder, and he's already been involved with Leeds' U21 side this season, despite being just 17 years old. He also featured for them in the Premier League 2 on three occasions last campaign, so he's clearly a player the club rate highly.
Alker has also represented England at U15 and U16 level, and Leeds need to be doing everything they can to develop him the right way, just like they did with Gray.
Daniel Farke's Leeds United team currently sit fifth in the Premier League table after an unbeaten start to the 2026/27 campaign
Tieing Alker down to a two-year professional contract is crucial for Leeds.
We've seen during the summer transfer window that a host of academy players have moved between sides for minimal fees, partly due to the fact that they haven't signed professional deals.
Leeds will now be able to command a significant fee if a club does come knocking for Alker.
Getting his development right will now be crucial as they look to ensure he becomes a senior player or can be sold for a huge profit like Gray.
