Leeds Thought They'd Signed the New Kaka - He Left Elland Road Without Scoring a Goal

Discover the rise and fall of Leeds' Adryan, once dubbed the next Kaka, and his unfulfilled potential in football.

Whenever a club signs a young player, particularly someone unknown from abroad, supporters will do all they can to research them and often come to the conclusion that they are the next big thing.

The reality is, young players so often don't reach their full potential, even after getting moves to big clubs in England, and some end up among the biggest flops in Premier League history .

There have been so many stories over the years of players tipped to be future superstars , and only a handful of years later, they're not even playing professional football.

Over 12 years ago now, Leeds were hoping they had signed the next big thing.

They secured the signature of then 20-year-old Adryan on loan from Brazilian side Flamengo, with the Yorkshire club having the option to make the deal permanent.

At the time, Adryan was highly regarded at Brazilian side Flamengo and was even given the number 10 shirt ahead of the 2014-2015 season, despite his age.

Adryan had already made a number of appearances for both the Brazil U17 and Brazil U20 sides, leading to Leeds making a move to secure his signature.

The Brazilian youngster was even given the number 9 shirt for Leeds before making his debut in October 2014.

Speaking before he joined, Leeds' owner at the time, Massimo Cellino, labelled Adryan a 'special talent' , with the Yorkshire club working to close the deal.

> “The player wants to come to Elland Road, so that is not the issue here. I know Adryan well and he is a special talent. But this is a complicated deal. There is still talking to do with Flamengo and the player’s agent."

Unfortunately, it didn't work out for Adryan at Leeds, making just 12 league appearances without even scoring a goal for the club.

The youngster's career didn't take off like many expected, later joining Swiss side FC Sion for six years before various spells across Europe.

At the age of 32, Adryan has been without a club since he played for Portuguesa RJ back in 2024 and is listed as retired on Transfermarkt.

In January 2024, Adryan was training with Hibernian , but they failed to sign him on a permanent basis.

As mentioned, Adryan was a highly rated youngster before his move to Leeds, even though it didn't quite work out for him in the Premier League .

The now-retired attacking midfielder was once compared to former AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Brazil superstar Kaka due to his skill and ability in the number 10 role.

Adryan also drew comparisons to another Brazilian legend, Zico, one of the greatest football players of all time , but it's safe to say he didn't get close to achieving what the aforementioned duo achieved.

It was certainly a signing that was worth the risk for Leeds back in 2014, especially on a season-long loan.

It didn't quite work out for him in England or elsewhere, for that matter. It's another case of a hyped-up youngster failing to hit the heights expected of them.
