End of the Road: Dan James Has No Future at Leeds After Farke Decisions

· GiveMeSport

Leeds United star Dan James may have no future at Elland Road after Daniel Farke's recent decisions.

Leeds United have had a strong start to their 2026/27 season, with Daniel Farke finding the perfect remedy to get the best from his squad.

The Whites are one of just five teams who remain unbeaten in the Premier League heading into the first international break, having claimed nine points from their opening five games of the campaign, putting them fifth in the table.

Leeds have defeated Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, while they have claimed draws against Brentford, Brighton, and Crystal Palace. They also progressed to the third round of EFL Cup by defeating Forest, before running Chelsea close in a thrilling 6-3 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

The performance of the Yorkshire club this season has seen Daniel Farke hold talks over signing a new contract with the club to extend his stay with the team, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the campaign.

The club have built the squad in his image this summer, restructuring the team as a result of the German's decision to change his system last season, which led to a major upturn in results. The team eventually finished 14th in the division, eight points above the relegation zone, with the new back five formation making them much stronger and more competitive all over the pitch.

Farke added to his squad this summer by bringing in centre-backs Tarik Muharemovic and Nico Elvedi, covering for the loss of Pascal Struijk, while attacking midfielder Harry Wilson, wing-back Melvin Bard, ball-playing goalkeeper James Trafford, and attacking sensation Jean-Matteo Bahoya have been signed too.

That has seen some players who were previously considered to be very important to Farke's squad and system rendered pretty useless, and that includes Wales international Dan James.

The 28-year-old has previously been a regular in the winger positions, with his pace and work-rate huge ingredients to the squad's successes in the Premier League and Championship.

But in this new system, he doesn't have the technical qualities to shine as one of the central strikers, and he has proven to be completely ineffective in his brief appearances as a wing-back.

Similar to Wilfried Gnonto, James has become a victim of the new system and has seen him influence and game time greatly reduced.

James has yet to start a game in the Premier League, featuring for just 52 minutes across three substitute appearances, while he did start twice in the EFL Cup, racking up 137 minutes and scoring one goal in the process.

But with so many players ahead of him in the pecking order, and now no cup games until the new year following their elimination, it's clear that James and Farke both have some big decisions to make about his future at the club.

The former Fulham and Man Utd winger signed a new contract last year to take him until 2029, but it's evident that he is now reaching the end of the road of his time at Elland Road.
