Following a defeat in the French capital to Paris Saint-Germain in Champions League action in midweek, Barcelona return home for the first El Clásico of the season as the Catalans welcome Real Madrid to the Greatest Stadium on Earth on Sunday Night Fútbol .

Barça come into this one looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season in a very competitive and entertaining match in Paris that was decided by minor details and a couple of poor individual mistakes, but the Blaugrana can be proud and encouraged by their effort and level of performance against the best team in the world.

Hansi Flick made it clear with his lineup selection and in-game substitutions that the match against PSG was seen as a test and nothing more, a way to figure out what they need to improve on to compete in Europe without asking their best players to do too much from a physical standpoint given what was around the corner this weekend.

El Clásico was and always should have been the priority match at the end of a brutal stretch of games, and Flick sounded optimistic in his pre-match press conference that the squad is fresh, well recovered and in good spirits ahead of Sunday’s game.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, have been quite messy and inconsistent this season under José Mourinho, and several early subpar performances and inconsistent results have them six points behind their biggest rivals in the league table.

Barça can open up a massive nine-point gap with a win and land a serious blow to Madrid’s title chances, and Los Blancos will be desperate for a result. Madrid have won their last four games in all competitions but have been very vulnerable at the back all season, and Mourinho will need to come up with one of his special single-match gameplans to try and stop the free-scoring Barça machine.

Vinicius Jr.’s suspension has opened the door for Yan Diomandé to finally begin justifying his lofty price tag, and he will provide a tough test for Xavi Espart and the Barça defense. Kylian Mbappé has been good in El Clásico even if results have largely not gone his way, and Madrid’s set piece threat is a real danger for a Barça side prone to conceding goals through the air.

Madrid will likely play a more defensive style and try to counter-attack against Barça’s high line, and it’s up to the Catalans to not lose the ball in bad positions and be clinical to convert their chances early to force Madrid to open up and allow more space for Barça’s lethal transition play.

Barça are favorites for this one but absolutely should not take it for granted, and must be ready for a true battle against a desperate Madrid side.

Let’s dance.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

- Barcelona (4-3-3) : Joan; Espart, Cubarsí, Martín, Cancelo; Fermín, Rodri, Pedri; Yamal, Raphinha, Gordon - Real Madrid (4-2-3-1) : Courtois; Valverde, Konaté, Rüdiger, Cucurella; Tchouaméni, Camavinga; Güler, Bellingham, Diomandé; Mbappé

PREDICTION

Madrid will be dangerous on the counter and on set pieces and will not be shy about resorting to some Getafe-level anti-football if they need to in an effort to slow Barça down, but I’m still trusting the home team to figure it out and get a big win in the biggest game of them all: 4-2 to the good guys.
