Man Utd: Bruno Fernandes Calls Out Carrick’s Lack of ‘Bravery’ vs Como

· GiveMeSport

Michael Carrick's night went from bad to worse as Bruno Fernandes questioned his tactics after Como 4-1 Man Utd.

Bruno Fernandes left nothing to the imagination in a damning interview following Manchester United's thrashing by Como on Wednesday.

Michael Carrick is under growing pressure, with Eddie Howe the early favourite to replace him in the Old Trafford dugout if United pull the trigger. Back-to-back Champions League defeats and only one league win so far aren't helping Carrick's case.

The English giants went behind in the second minute against Cesc Fabregas' impressive Como team, and never really looked like getting back into the game. If that didn't mark a bad enough night for Carrick , his captain's comments after the game didn't help.

Fernandes struggled to impact the game from an unfamiliar false nine position and was on the receiving end of heavy criticism from fans .

However, the 32-year-old came out swinging in his post-match interview and appeared to place the majority of the blame at the feet of his manager. Some have even accused him of throwing Carrick 'under the bus'.

The Red Devils have now gone seven matches without a win following defeat in the Champions League.

Speaking to TNT Sports after being substituted in the 67th minute, Fernandes explained that Carrick and his staff's pressing tactics gave Como confidence and space.

> He said: "It’s a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball by waiting for them.

> "But sometimes, when you give space to these teams, they get confidence."

> He was then directly asked if Carrick had got the tactics wrong, to which Bruno responded: "That’s on the manager and staff to see, not me.

> "Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable."

Fernandes becomes the second Man Utd player in just over a week to break rank and take aim at a senior figure at the club. Lisandro Martinez blamed Jason Wilcox for the lack of backing Carrick received in the summer after last week's loss vs Atletico.

While many United fans aren't too happy with Fernandes' comments, Carrick accepted responsibility for recent results in his interview after the game.

> "I 100 per cent take responsibility for the overall team and the performance," the 45-year-old said. "That’s where it stops. It stops with me and I’m absolutely fine with that. I accept that totally."

The midfielder-turned-manager labelled the performance as 'unacceptable', adding: "But as a supporter of this football club for so long, to see a performance like that is unacceptable, I have to say."
