Bayern Munich has known its fair share of legendary strikers. Harry Kane follows in the footsteps of giants, from Gerd Müller to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, from Giovane Élber and Luca Toni to Robert Lewandowski in the most recent past. Few won the biggest individual prize football has to offer. One was arguably robbed (twice!). In the coming days, Kane stands a chance of cementing himself in history.
His record speaks for itself. Seventy-three goals last season means he will be awarded the Müller Trophy, given to the highest scorer from the past season. This will be the England captain’s second time winning the award, with both instances coming after his move to FC Bayern in 2023. In this case, club and player have found a winning combination that elevates each other.
So, what accolades await the 33-year-old at the Ballon d’Or ceremony? Well, let’s recap:
- He will become the second player to win two Müller Trophies, following in the footsteps of Robert Lewandowski, who also did it with Bayern Munich. - He could become the first Ballon d’Or winner who also won the Müller Trophy the same year. Both Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski had a shot, but they never got the big prize due to extenuating circumstances. - He could become the fourth Bayern Munich player to win the Ballon d’Or, after Gerd Müller, Franz Beckenbauer, and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. - In the same vein, he would become the seventh player to lift the Ballon d’Or while playing for a Bundesliga club. - Following on to that stat, he would become the fifth English player and the seventh British player to win a Ballon d’Or. He follows in the footsteps of Kevin Keegan, who also played in the Bundesliga, and Michael Owen, the last Englishman to lift the trophy for his country.
Of course, all this supposes that Kane actually does win the Ballo n d’Or this year. He seems to be the favorite for the oddsmakers, but FC Barcelona and Spain youngster Lamine Yamal b oasts a strong claim thanks to his country winning the World Cup. Real Madrid and France striker Kylian Mbappé has also put his name in for contention, though he falls short of Kane on goals, and Yamal (plus Kane) on trophies. Lest we forget Michael Oli se, Kane’s teammate, who had an incredible season of his own.
For Harry Kane, this ceremony could represen t the pinnacle of personal achievement—the exact thing he was looking for when he left Tottenham Hotspur back in 2023. If the judges chosen by France Football make the right choice, the England striker could add his name to an illustrious list, sol idifying his legacy as one of the greatest strikers in the sport.
