The NFL is traveling to England this week. So naturally, it is the perfect time for some American football stars to weigh in on some of the brightest prospects for their game in Europe. And who brighter than Bayern Munich star striker and England captain Harry Kane?
Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little — who holds the NFL’s record for longest field goal — spoke positively about Kane’s potential for a post-football footballing career in America. However, Little warned that Kane would need to adapt to the ‘cultural’ differences in the two sports in comments captured through Canadian outlet TSN (via AP).
For one thing, Kane is at center stage at one of the biggest clubs in Europe. An NFL kicker…well.
> “You’re not going to get on the ball, and you don’t have the same moxie, I guess, because he is a star striker for the team. So that moxie is just kind of put to the side. You’ve got to let everyone else do the big man’s job, and then you’re out there just to back everyone up basically,” Little stated.
On Kane’s skill alone, though, Little believes that the technique will likely translate.
> “It’d be like him taking five set pieces a day. And he’s got to deliver on all five set pieces, or you didn’t do your job,” Little added. “Missing a set piece or missing a wide-open goal, you see a lot of strikers do that, and they’ll come back and put the game away. I’ve got to have short-term memory and be at my best when the best is required.”
So…like penalties with higher expectations and lower rewards?
If Kane’s NFL ambitions are serious, it would be entertaining to see him entertain a second career in the NFL. Here’s the kicker, though. Does the Englishman realize just how peripheral kickers are to the American game?
Then again…as Bayern fans know well, never count Kane out of anything
The Jags (4-1) take on the Houston Texans (1-4) in an AFC South divisional clash on Sunday at 9:30 AM Eastern at Wembley.
