Real Madrid produced one of their best comebacks in recent years, when the team managed to fight back from a 3-1 deficit to win 4-3 against AS Roma in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Three late goals in quick succession from Carlos Espi, Endrick and Antonio Rudiger secured a late and fantastic victory for Los Blancos .
However, for the majority of the game, the team simply failed to create any meaningful chances for the team.
Courtois the second best passer
As reported by Mundo Deportivo , a closer look at the passing numbers paints a worrying picture of where Real Madrid’s play was being built from.
Thibaut Courtois, who conceded three times but still produced several crucial saves to keep his side in the contest, ended the night as Real Madrid’s second-most prolific passer.
The Belgian completed 55 passes, bettered only by Ibrahima Konate on 56.
That a goalkeeper outpassed almost the entire outfield unit is a telling indicator of just how direct and disjointed Madrid’s football was in Rome.
A midfield that went missing
The concern deepens when Courtois’s tally is set against those of the men paid to run the game.
Federico Valverde managed just 31 passes, Aurelien Tchouameni 39 and Jude Bellingham 44, all shy of their own goalkeeper.
Arda Guler, introduced from the bench, racked up 27 in barely half an hour, including the three corners that directly created Madrid’s goals.
This is part of the larger problem for Real Madrid, who have been unable to control matches and provide stability in midfield.
Missing out on Rodri in the summer is clearly something the club are ruing, and it’s a mistake the team is determined to rectify in the near future.
Indeed, recent reports suggest Real Madrid are keen on signing a world class midfielder , either in January or in the summer of 2027. It has become one of the club’s biggest priorities heading into the new year.
