Rafael Leao was unable to prevent Galatasaray from suffering a 4-1 defeat against Barcelona , but the Portuguese forward left Istanbul with a strong message about the talent of Lamine Yamal.
The Galatasaray winger played a part in the build-up to his side’s only goal and witnessed Yamal influence Barcelona’s comeback with two decisive assists.
Speaking to TNT Sports Brasil after the match, Leao praised the teenager’s ability and expressed his hope that the Barcelona star would go on to collect football’s biggest individual and team honours.
> “I hope Lamine Yamal wins the Ballon d’Or and major titles with Barça,” said the Portuguese.
Leao backs Lamine Yamal to win the Ballon d’Or
Apart from backing the Barcelona talent, the Portuguese international also highlighted Lamine’s character and the environment helping him develop at one of Europe’s leading clubs.
> “He is among the best players in the world. He is someone I hold in very high regard, both as a footballer and as a person.
> “He is surrounded by good players at an extraordinary club,” said Leao.
Yamal’s two assists against Galatasaray showed why he is regarded as one of the most influential young attackers in European football.
His ability to create chances in one-on-one situations and deliver decisive passes made a major difference as Barcelona turned the game around in the second half.
Leao, meanwhile, was among Galatasaray’s more dangerous attacking players, particularly during a first half in which the Turkish side managed to put Hansi Flick’s team under pressure.
Barcelona once considered a move for Rafael Leao
Leao’s comments also carry an interesting connection to Barcelona’s transfer history.
Notably, the Catalan club monitored the Portuguese winger across several transfer windows and seriously considered bringing him in to strengthen the left flank.
However, a deal never materialised, and Leao eventually continued his career elsewhere before facing Barcelona in Galatasaray colours.
The meeting in Istanbul therefore brought together two players whose careers have attracted attention from the same club, albeit in very different circumstances.
While Leao remains an established attacking threat, Yamal is developing into one of Barcelona’s defining players.
