Galatasaray came at Barcelona with all their might, faith, and atmosphere on Saturday night, hoping to get the better of the Catalans and inflict a season’s first defeat on them.
They took a step in the right direction by opening the scoring close to the half-hour mark, and managed to put Barcelona under some pressure for a brief period.
Once Barcelona began taking their chances, however, the hosts stood no chance of securing a result, and by the end of the 90 minutes, they were more silent than they have ever been this season.
Joao Cancelo, Fermin Lopez, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi all scored for Barcelona on the night, with Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Rodri also standing out with their contributions .
In the end, the team won with a 4-1 margin and are currently the leaders of the UEFA Champions League league phase.
Barca Universal brings you three takeaways from Galatasaray 1-4 Barcelona.
A game of two halves
Barcelona dominated both halves against Galatasaray last night to good effect, but the game still was one that saw both halves headlined by two distinct dynamics.
The difference between the first and the second half, simply, was down to the hosts’ attacking intent and fight – something which was well pronounced in the opening period but significantly died down after the break.
In the opening period, Barcelona created the better chances for the first half hour but the Turkish side defended well to keep them at bay. Eventually, they scored against the run of play, and seemingly even got a second goal soon after.
While VAR disallowed their second goal, it was clear that Galatasaray were also competing on level terms with Barcelona before the break. Once the whistle blew for the second half, however, everything changed.
In the second period, Barcelona were several notches ahead of their opponents and gave them no chance at all. The Turkish side struggled to see the ball, string together passes of value and even create meaningful chances as Hansi Flick’s side deposited goal after goal.
The Blaugranas ‘ chance-creation, in fact, was so potent that they could well have had four goals in a spell of ten minutes before the hour mark.
In that sense, as strange as it sounds, it was a game of two halves, but one where Barcelona dominated both.
Bliss in hell
The atmosphere that the venue in Istanbul had last night was simply frightening, and the crowd lived up to their tag of making the stadium hell for the visitors.
With lights, smoke and daunting chants echoing across the ground, it seemed like Barcelona were walking into a burning inferno last night. There is not a fraction of doubt that the pressure of the venue did get to the Barcelona players to some capacity.
After Galatasaray opened the scoring in the 28th minute, the noise levels at the Rams Stadyumu peaked to a deafening level, and it was indeed a ‘welcome to hell’ for Barcelona.
Despite all that pressure on their shoulders and the hostile crowd behind them, however, the Catalan side continued to play their football undisturbed.
There was a sense of positivity and assurance from the team which they have lacked in Europe in recent years – one that shows that this Barcelona side cannot be stopped by any hostile crowd, environment pr away stadium.
Galatasaray’s stadium is one of, if not the most daunting atmospheres to play in, and Hansi Flick deserves massive credit for turning this Barcelona dressing room into warriors who are unperturbed by the same.
The manner in which they put Galatasaray away in front of their own fans and brought the chaos to a deafening silence was astonishing, and it is clear that Barcelona mean business this time around.
Lamine Yamal is a step above others
Lamine Yamal’s baseline level is one that most footballers dream of reaching in their prime years, and given that he is still just 19, the sky is the limit for him.
A routine off night for the youngster, in itself, is a level above what most players operate at. When he switches on, however, matters begin to get very frightening.
Last night saw that phenomenon on full display as Yamal started off the game as a regular night and was a usual menace down the flank in the first half.
After the break, however, he turned up the heat and took his game to a new level – one that single-handedly decided the result in a matter of minutes.
Galatasaray simply had no answers to Yamal’s brilliance after the break as he conjured up new dribbles, attacking sequences and combinations in every move.
He first assisted Fermin Lopez with a stunning, yet perfectly weighted ball over the top and then went on to produce a stunning dribble with a fake rabona to assist Anthony Gordon’s goal.
Even the team’s fourth goal on the night, which came from the boots of Karim Adeyemi, was set up by Lamine Yamal. He did not register the assist owing to an imperfect touch by Gabriel Jesus, but the ball to set up the winger was all his.
