Jamie Carragher has issued a strong reaction following Lisandro Martinez’s explosive comments after Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League .
Martinez called out the Man Utd hierarchy following the club’s poor start to the 2026-27 campaign. Tuesday’s defeat in Madrid means the Red Devils have won just two of their opening nine fixtures in all competitions.
"I expect more [investment]. 100%,” Martinez said in his post-match interview on Amazon Prime. “I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox]. "I have to be honest, as players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.
> "Tonight it is easy to [blame] the coach, easy to say the players but also we have to see other areas."
United got off to the worst possible start at the Metropolitano Stadium, conceding after 47 seconds.
While Michael Carrick’s men created several goalscoring opportunities after falling behind, they failed to find an equaliser. A controversial red card for Leny Yoro in the 74th minute was then closely followed by Ademola Lookman wrapping up the victory for Atleti.
Carrick stayed tight-lipped about Martinez’s eye-opening post-match comments, insisting he hadn’t seen enough to comment.
However, Carrick’s former England teammate, Jamie Carragher, labelled Martinez “out of order” on CBS Sports.
"It's funny when players say that. They never talk about their own positions,” the Liverpool legend commented. "Whenever a player goes, 'We haven't done enough on the transfer window', he never means centre-back. He won't mean centre-back.
> "He means other areas in the pitch. So the players who came in in the summer, how do you think they feel when he's saying that now?
> "And this is not me just having a go at a Man United player. Last year, when Ruben Amorim went for the people above him last season, I said straight away, he should be sacked.
> "Not just because there were comments. I was saying, you're lucky to still be in a job.
> "You can't be having a go at the people above you. I think your football club's your family. And there's a lot of stuff going on inside it that, you know, people are arguing or they’re not happy with this.
> “I can understand. You might not be happy with the squad or Michael Carrick, but as a football club and as a family, we all know with our brothers, our sisters, mums, dads, aunties, uncles, there'll be problems and someone who doesn't like someone and people fall out here and there. But I tell you what, when you go outside that front door, you put a United front on. You do.
> "You protect each other. No, I'm being serious now, I do. And I think your football club's like that.
> "And I hated it when I was at Liverpool, if anybody sort of was speaking out of turn or having a go at the manager or the manager was having a go at the board. We're supposed to be as one.
> "It might be a bit of an act, but you have to put that act on as families do and as football clubs do. And this will just be the talk of the town now. This will just, this will blow up, explode. And I think he's out of order."
It doesn’t get any easier for Man Utd’s beleaguered players. They face rivals Leeds United at Elland Road in the Premier League on Sunday before travelling to Como in the Champions League next Wednesday.
