Speaking in Monday’s press conference ahead of Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League clash against Norwegian outfit Viking on Tuesday night, Vincent Kompany confirmed that Jonas Urbig will start in goal ahead of Manuel Neuer, who suffered an injury.
When questioned who will start in goal, Kompany replied: “Manuel Neuer felt something in his foot and will not train today, so the answer is clear.” Going into depth, the Belgian added: “He felt it after the Augsburg game and then it developed a bit. I don’t think it’s anything bad, but he didn’t train yesterday and today, so it doesn’t make any sense to take risks.”
It means that Urbig’s appearance against Viking will be his first as a fully-fledged Germany international.
Speaking on Urbig’s development, Kompany said: “He got the minutes we wanted to give him for his development. He played in the cup final and in several Champions Legaue games.
> “The fact he’s now also played for Germany is a result of that development, and every minute is positive for his development.”
