Spurs owners inject £120m into club
Latest from Sky Sports News' Michael Bridge:
Tottenham's majority owners have invested a further £120m in the club.
The additional funds take the amount provided to around £320m in the past 12 months and follows on from another £100m put into the club this summer by the Lewis family, who run Spurs’ majority owner ENIC.
The Lewis family have taken on a bigger role in decision-making at the club since Daniel Levy stepped down as executive chairman last September.
The summer investment increased the Lewis family's shareholding in Tottenham to around 88 per cent.
Levy was invited at the time to increase his proportionate share to ensure his stake was not diluted, but he did not take up that option ahead of the deadline, so his holding fell to around 27 per cent from 29.88 per cent.
It is not yet clear whether Levy will be given the chance to participate in this latest move, which, if not, could have a similar impact around his stake, which would then be in the region of 25 per cent.
Marmoush confident Tottenham are close to turning form around
Summer signing Omar Marmoush believes Tottenham are close to finding the key to turn around their terrible start to the season.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side have just two points from four Premier League matches and their only goals have come in the Carabao Cup – which they were knocked out of by Liverpool after a 3-1 defeat at Anfield.
There were positive signs in that game, however, as they were better than their hosts in plenty of metrics – shots taken, shots on target, possession, touches in the opposition box – but not in the one which ultimately counted.
That was due somewhat in part to Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who made three good saves including a brilliant stop from a deflected Marmoush effort with the score at 2-1 late in the second half.
> “He made an unbelievable save and he was one of the best players on the pitch,” the on-loan Egypt international, for whom Spurs have an obligation to buy for £60million at the end of the season, told the club’s website.
> “Everyone can see we reach the goal so many times, we have so much quality on the pitch – and from the people who come off the bench to give us this last push – and when these small details click it will be very good.
> “Every game we create more and more chances and I am sure we are very close.”
Tottenham’s goalscoring problems are well documented with Conor Gallagher’s 69th-minute header their first against top-flight opposition since the final day of last season.
For a period it put them in the ascendancy, but they could not force an equaliser.
> “These moments build the mentality and the team together. We are all one big family and we push together,” Marmoush added.
> “These small glimpses of success give us another push and we have to build this confidence within us without these moments in order to proceed to other games and be very successful.
> “All of us in the club – the staff, the fans, the coaching staff, everyone around us – we have to support each other in order to reach our goal because that’s the only way we can reach it.”

O'Hara: There's a dark cloud hanging over Tottenham
Jamie O'Hara says there is "a cloud over Tottenham again" and believes the club are suffering from a persistent "losing mentality" after their 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat at Liverpool.
Tottenham were beaten by goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai at Anfield on Tuesday night, despite Conor Gallagher scoring their first goal against a top-flight opponent this season.
Spurs produced a more encouraging performance than in their weekend goalless draw with Everton and created opportunities to get back into the game, with Giorgi Mamardashvili making an outstanding save to deny Omar Marmoush an equaliser.
However, O'Hara believes the result highlighted a wider problem for Roberto De Zerbi's side, who are still waiting for their summer signings and new-look team to click.
> "The team's not clicking," O'Hara told Sky Sports News.
> "New signings coming in and haven't got going yet at all. I haven't really seen any kind of signs of them making a mark on the team.
> "I think there's a huge problem with that in terms of us being able to win games, knowing how to win games.
> "And I just feel like there's this cloud over Tottenham again, which I thought we might have been able to get rid of from last season, staying in the Premier League, bringing in new signings and you kind of get rid of that dark cloud.
> "But it's still hanging over us, still hanging over Tottenham."
O'Hara, who made more than 100 appearances for Spurs during his playing career, believes the club have developed a culture of losing which is difficult to shake.
> "I've said it before, but it's almost like there's a disease at Tottenham. It's like a losing mentality," he added.
> "And when it infiltrates your football club, people will notice; players notice that I've played with, I've been involved with it, managers know it.
> "When you keep losing, you just can't get out. You're like, 'can't get a result, can't get a result'. You've got to try and find a way to get rid of that.
> "And at the moment, Spurs are suffering.
> "Spurs have got this problem where they don't know how to win football matches."
De Zerbi encouraged by performance in 'undeserved' Liverpool loss
Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi believes his side did not deserve to lose at Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, with the performance giving him encouragement that they “will win many games”.
Spurs ended their goal drought against top-flight opposition this season as Conor Gallagher’s header gave them hope of a comeback at Anfield before Dominik Szoboszlai’s wonder strike sealed Liverpool’s 3-1 third-round win.
Spurs had more shots on target, more shots and a higher expected goals than Liverpool in the defeat - and they now go in search of their first Premier League goal and win of the season on Saturday against Aston Villa at home.
De Zerbi told Sky Sports after the loss at Liverpool: “We created chances to win the game.
> “It’s not a very good moment, but I believe in my players, and I told them five minutes ago to stay calm.
> "We need a click. I don’t know if we are able to make this click Saturday, but playing like this and believing in ourselves and our style of play, I think we’ll win many games and score many goals because the qualities of my players is very high.”
He added: “There are many, many positives. We are sorry, disappointed and frustrated for the results.
> “I think we didn’t deserve to lose, but it’s the first season. We are building totally different things with me.
> “I believe in my players, this project. I have no doubts. I believe in this club, but now we are not so lucky.
> “It’s not good to say too many ‘ifs’ but we played very well this evening.”
At his post-match press conference, De Zerbi revealed Pedro Porro will be available for Saturday's match against Villa.
The Spain World Cup winner missed the defeat at Anfield and last weekend's draw against Everton due to injury.
REPORT: Spurs do score but Szoboszlai stunner seals win for Liverpool
Sky Sports' Adam Bate at Anfield:
Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning strike sealed a 3-1 win for Liverpool over Tottenham in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Anfield.
De Zerbi backs Solanke to be a real force in front of goal again
Roberto De Zerbi has no doubt Tottenham forward Dominic Solanke can rediscover his form from his Bournemouth days.
Solanke will face old club Liverpool on Tuesday in an important Carabao Cup tie for Spurs, who have started the new Premier League without a win or goal from four matches.
The eye-catching decision to leave Richarlison out of Tottenham’s 25-man Premier League squad list has placed great significance on Solanke, who missed the majority of last season with multiple ankle injuries.
> “I can’t understand why I have to think negative. OK, because the last season he was injured many times, yes,” De Zerbi explained.
> “It’s not the same last season (compared to) this season. This season, I repeat, we have a top physical, medical staff. We have not three games per week.
> “I spoke with him and I would like to manage him in the best way I can. In physical aspect and in mental aspect, because he’s a sensitive guy, he needs to feel full confidence and from myself he has big, big confidence.
> “I believe he can score 10-15 goals for sure. He’s already scored in Bournemouth, and why not he can score in Tottenham? It’s the same sport, different stadium, no pressure, because in our stadium if we push, if we play well, the fans are with us.
> “Tomorrow I would like (Solanke) to play part of the game. I don’t know if at the beginning or at the end but one part of the game. It can be important for him.
> “And then I think he comes back the player who was in Bournemouth. I remember Brighton-Bournemouth in the Amex Stadium, he was incredible. I said to my assistant, ‘Who is this striker?’
> “My challenge is to help him and to put him in the right condition to score.”
De Zerbi revealed Tottenham’s toothless attackers have worked on extra shooting practice in training, and he also confirmed Mohammed Kudus is in line for his first competitive start since January.
James Maddison, who is still working his way up to full fitness after a serious knee injury, is not ready to start, but expected to be involved at Anfield.
De Zerbi also took the squad out to dinner in Mayfair again last week and paid the bill, he said: “I’m the coach, I’m older than players and it’s a pleasure going for dinner with my players.”
> “As long as I keep money just for the cigarette, then no problem.”
Richarlison responds after being left out of Carabao Cup squad
Richarlison has responded to being left out of Tottenham’s squad for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool, live on Sky Sports.
The striker posted on social media, 'Why?' with a sad emoji face over Fabrizio Romano's tweet of Roberto De Zerbi confirming the Brazil international had been left out of the Anfield trip.
Richarlison was omitted from Spurs’ 25-man Premier League squad after being informed he is not part of the club’s first-team plans, but he failed to secure a departure after turning down a move to Brazilian side Vasco da Gama last Friday.
He is eligible to play in the Carabao Cup, but De Zerbi confirmed the ex-Everton forward will not feature despite boasting a strong record of four goals in seven meetings against Liverpool for Tottenham, who have yet to score in the league this season.
Asked if there was any way back for Richarlison, De Zerbi said: "It’s not for me, this question.
> “Anyway, we lost in Brentford 3-0 with Richarlison. Maybe you forgot. Just to remember.”
Earlier on Friday, the Italian said: “Richarlison, you already know everything and nothing changes for Carabao Cup or Premier League. The situation is the same.
> “I stay in the middle and I can’t say nothing more because it is not my job. I can answer about the result and the players in the squad, the offensive phase, the defensive phase, but not for other things.
> “What I have done at the beginning of this season has been to speak with him and to propose an extension of the contract. If he said, ‘no thank you,’ I finished my job.
> “I said last press conference. I know what happened in the last 45 days. It’s not right if I explained. It’s not my behaviour. The relationship, the problem is between the player and the club.
> “I stay within the club. It’s coach and club together. At the start of this season I spoke to him many times to convince him to stay and he didn’t want to. I can’t go every day to pray for him to stay.”
