Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur battled to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday night, in a thrilling clash between two sides far from their best.
The Red Devils turned in one of their worst first-half performances under Michael Carrick as they were dominated by Spurs. But some huge saves from Senne Lammens, and some wasteful finishing by the visitors, meant the teams went into the break level.
United and Spurs both had chances in the second half, with the Lilywhites the better side for the majority, but a moment of magic from Bryan Mbeumo saw him turn inside the box and unleash a fine left-footed strike into the bottom corner to give the hosts the lead in the 73rd minute.
Things went from bad to worse for Spurs as substitute Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Luke Shaw, which sparked a shoving match, before the Uruguayan headbutted the left-back. But the visitors had the last laugh, as Sandro Tonali's cross found Dominic Solanke in injury time for him to head home and equalise, with the points shared.
Man Utd Player Ratings
Senne Lammens - C
Lammens started the game poorly with a terrible pass that was intercepted, but immediately made amends with a stunning save to deny Dominic Solanke. His game was shaky after that, with his distribution a major factor. Shot-stopping was good, but needs to improve going forward. Could maybe have done better for the equaliser.
Leny Yoro - B
Without a doubt the best-performing United player on the day, especially when you consider he was out of position. He deserved a start and showed his quality, with several excellent tackles and interceptions before being bizarrely substituted on the hour.
Harry Maguire - D
A lack of pace and mobility was clearly targeted by Spurs, with a lot of their attacks going down his side. He dealt with the majority well, but was fortunate on a few occasions to be bailed out by teammates.
Lisandro Martinez - D
Martinez wasn't at his best on the day, but he also did very little wrong himself. His passing was not as astute as usual, and he did very well to put Solanke off what was a sure-fire goal in the second half without his input. Manhandled by Solanke for the equaliser, and should have done better.
Luke Shaw - C
The defender was up against an electric Mohammed Kudus for much of the game and held his own, and then played a part in the goal. A better performance from the experienced Shaw, who has struggled at points this season.
Youri Tielemans - E
Arguably the worst performance of his young Man Utd career so far, as the Belgian constantly lost possession in midfield, and struggled hugely with the physicality and pace of the Spurs team. Was taken off before the hour mark as a result
Kobbie Mainoo - D
Mainoo struggled in the first half, as did the entire team, but he grew into the game and was helped massively in the second half by the legs and athleticism of Carlos Baleba. Got his foot on the ball and dictated play.
Amad - D
A return from injury for the Ivorian saw him have to do more work off the ball than on it, and as a result the tricky winger struggled to make an impact before being brought off on the hour.
Bruno Fernandes - F
The skipper often gets let off for bad performances because of his output across the season, but the Portuguese midfielder was abysmal against Spurs. He often looked as though he couldn't run, and as a result tried to play countless Hollywood passes rather than keeping things simple. Was very lucky not to be substituted.
Matheus Cunha - D
Cunha was put into his wide-left role once again and worked hard off the ball, trying to win it back and getting the fans riled up with tackles and pressing. It wasn't a good performance, but he popped up with the assist for Mbeumo's goal, and that's why United paid the big money for him.
Bryan Mbeumo - C
Mbeumo was moved into a central striker role for the first half and showed great desire and commitment, while being the only real threat throughout. Was moved back to the right in the second half, but found himself in the box to score the winning goal brilliantly. One of the standout performers.
Carlos Baleba - B
United finally found a foothold in the game when Baleba came on to make his debut, with his athleticism and power making a huge difference in midfield. A brilliant performance from the substitute, who is already knocking on the door for a starting spot.
Joshua Zirkzee - C+
Zirkzee could well have been playing his football elsewhere this season, but the Netherlands star came off the bench and made a clear difference with his hold-up play and technical skills to help United get up the pitch and be more of a threat.
Diogo Dalot - D
Dalot came onto the pitch in surprising circumstances, and his athleticism helped the team to contain the Spurs attack better in one-on-one situations. Had a chance to cross the ball for Mbeumo, but took way too many touches and went backwards, much to the dismay of the fans and his teammates.
Marcus Rashford - N/A
Ayden Heaven - N/A
Manchester United have been linked with a move to appoint former Tottenham manager Antonio Conte.
