Well, this is a bad look.
Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with fellow Bavarians, FC Augsburg. The result was heavily influenced by a combination of mistakes from Bayern players and unfortunate circumstances. Augsburg’s first goal was a direct result of a misplaced pass from Manuel Neuer, and the second goal stemmed from a defensive error, to which Neuer also contributed by deflecting the ball toward the opponents.
Criticism of the veteran goalkeeper following the draw has been loud, with many believing his retirement is nearing. In light of the backlash, Neuer addressed both goals—particularly the second one—claiming it was not solely his fault.
“It was a powerful shot that I couldn’t hold on to. I parried it out wide, and then we were caught out again and he slotted it home,” Neuer told Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) .
Neuer went on to argue that the majority of the blame rested on poor defending, effectively pointing the finger at his own teammates. “The fact that the [Augsburg] center-back was able to run at us unchallenged,” he remarked.
While the situation certainly resulted from both a defensive error and his own mistake, it is concerning that Neuer chose to publicly criticize his teammates rather than resolving the matter privately. Is this him throwing his team under the bus? Whether or not that is the case, it is not a good look for the captain.
