Leeds Have Squad Depth Issue That Needs Resolving
· GiveMeSport
Leeds face squad depth challenges after Chelsea loss as focus shifts to Premier League.
Leeds have a big problem that needs solving, but it's going to take them a while to do so.
The Yorkshire club looked as though they would be advancing to the next round of the Carabao Cup after a strong start against Chelsea this week, but they threw the game away in the second half.
Daniel Farke made a number of changes in order to rotate his side, and it looked as though the fringe players would have no problems at Stamford Bridge as they went 2-0 up. Unfortunately for them, Chelsea turned it round to 3-2, and they were deadly in front of goal since then.
Focus now shifts back to the Premier League, where Leeds have got off to a strong start, but the game against Chelsea did show a clear issue that needs addressing in the future.
Farke made eight changes for the game, with the focus clearly being on the Premier League, but they'll be disappointed with the performance in the second half.
The big issue Leeds clearly have if they want to progress and go to the next level is their depth.
Too many fringe players produced disappointing performances, which shows their depth simply isn't good enough if they want to challenge in multiple competitions.
As it stands, it's clear to see that Farke is simply hoping to focus on continuing to cement themselves as a Premier League club.
That's perfectly reasonable for Leeds after only getting promoted recently, but if they do want to start competing for cups and move to the next level in the league, they need to improve their depth.
It's going to take them a lot of time to fully gut out their squad and raise the floor, but that should be the next objective.
If Leeds do continue to focus purely on the Premier League, then they could have an outside chance of qualifying for Europe.
Clubs like Bournemouth qualifying should give Leeds fans hope that they could do the same, and the start they've had to the season shows they can compete.
The Yorkshire club currently sit in ninth position in the table, but they are unbeaten in their opening three games.
Europe might not be the sole objective, but it would certainly be an added bonus if they can get there.
