Jose Mourinho's 2019 Comments About Ireland's Troy Parrott at Spurs
· GiveMeSport
Jose Mourinho's comments about Troy Parrott at Spurs are very interesting amid stunning Ireland form.
Former Tottenham Hotspur youngster Troy Parrott has enjoyed a rise to the top of international football, as he becomes a key player for Ireland. After a successful spell in the Netherlands at AZ Alkmaar, the striker was a player of high interest to numerous clubs, eventually signing for Spanish club Real Betis .
Whilst he struggled to nail down a starting spot at Spurs, he was able to become part of the first team, making some appearances from the bench and starting occasionally. However, due to the striker spot being unattainable – thanks to Harry Kane – Parrott eventually chose to leave for first-team football, and it is a move that has paid off after scoring another wonder goal for Ireland during this international break, as he's bagged four in his last three outings for his nation.
And now, comments from one of his former bosses have resurfaced and look very interesting.
Parrott first debuted for Spurs in 2019 under Mauricio Pochettino, before the Argentinian left the club and was replaced by José Mourinho.
After the initial breakthrough into the Spurs team, Parrott wasn't trusted by Jose Mourinho as he was dropped into the U23s. This was made all the more confusing when, at the time, Spurs did not have a fit striker in their squad, but that still wasn't enough for Parrott to earn a spot in the starting XI.
At the time, Mourinho said :
> "I was so happy with the way he performed, and I'm not speaking about his goal. I told him before the game: 'Every time you play with kids of your age, you have to show your colleagues why you are the privileged one.'
> Because it was something he was not doing. Every time he was playing with the kids, he was playing with the mentality of, 'I shouldn't be here', or 'I am too good to be here.' Troy cannot go there with discontent, contempt. It is a process. So everything goes very, very well. But this is a world where lots of people don't even know if Troy has long hair or short hair, or is blonde or is dark.
> He is not ready."
It was strong words from Mourinho, and it could have been enough to derail Parrott's career, as unsuccessful loan spells with Millwall, Ipswich, MK Dons and Preston slowed his progress. However, he certainly seems to be doing well now.
It all kicked off ahead of the Nations League fixture.
Whilst Mourinho did have some harsh words to say, it hasn't affected Parrott, who recently scored the deciding goal in Real Betis's 1-0 win over Mourinho's Real Madrid side. It clearly shows how Mourinho's words have spurred Parrott on to the success he has achieved.
Parrott himself has acknowledged the excellent management he received under Mourinho, who played a key part in the early stages of his career.
On his debut for Spurs, Parrott was given the match ball by Mourinho, despite Heung-min Son scoring a hat-trick. Speaking about the situation, Parrott said (via Irish Football Fan TV ):
> "It was a really nice moment; he didn't have to do that, I had only just come on the pitch. For someone like that to give me such a good gesture when he doesn't have to speaks volumes about the personalities of the coaches."
He continued to talk about Mourinho,
> "I saw Jose when I played Fenerbahce; he did say I had progressed a lot. To hear something like that from someone I worked with when I was so young is really good.
> He has won the Premier League, the Champions League, and managed some of the best teams in the world, so for him to look at me that way, I can't ask for much more."
