Man Utd: Eddie Howe Stance on Replacing Michael Carrick Emerges

Michael Carrick is under pressure at Man Utd, and Eddie Howe has been linked as a potential replacement.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is under pressure after a poor start to the season, and Eddie Howe is reportedly someone being considered as a potential replacement.

The Red Devils finished third in the Premier League last season after Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January as an interim manager, before being handed the role on a permanent basis during the summer.

But United have started the season in a bad way, winning just two of their seven games in all competitions, while also being eliminated from the EFL Cup by Brighton despite being 2-0 up inside 10 minutes of the game.

The team have won just one of their opening five games in the Premier League, and as a result the manager has come under big pressure for his job during the international break.

Man Utd are understood to be interested in appointing former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe should they make the decision to sack Carrick, although currently, the former midfielder is still being backed by INEOS and United chiefs.

That's just as well, as it has now emerged that Howe is not currently interested in a return to football management - even at Old Trafford.

According to Luke Edwards, writing for The Telegraph , Howe is 'not thinking about football at all, he is not thinking about another job and currently has no plans to return to management,' according to several sources close to the 48-year-old.

Howe left Newcastle in August in a surprise move, having decided that he was not the right man to lead the Magpies' rebuild following a difficult transfer window during the summer. His plan was to take a prolonged break from football entirely, meaning Man Utd may have to look towards alternatives.

There's no doubting that there were some big question marks over Michael Carrick's fit for the job on a permanent basis, despite the excellent work he did last season as the interim.

The manager wasn't helped with the transfer window that the club had either, with a midfield rebuild undertaken but no left-back or forwards arriving, leaving him light on numbers.

The biggest signing of the window was Carlos Baleba, and he hasn't been fit enough to make his debut either. United need to give him a chance to at least implement things and play with his strongest team before making a decision on whether he is right for the job.

It's sensible for the club to be keeping an eye on potential options just in case they need to make a change, but right now, Carrick deserves a chance to show his quality and leadership through a tough time.

Manchester United are reportedly showing an interest in signing Brentford forward Kevin Schade.
