Despite missing several key players and having Vincent Kompany absent after his collapse earlier this week, Bayern Munich defeated SC Freiburg 3-1 at the Europa-Park Stadion to reclaim top spot in the Bundesliga. Assistant coach Aaron Danks took charge on the touchline, and the visitors delivered an important resul t ahead of next weekend’s Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund.

Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring in the 1 6th minute with a spectacular solo effort. After helping initiate the counterattack, the French defender raced forward, collected a perfectly weighted pass from Mich ael Olise, and finished calmly past Freiburg goalkeeper Mio Backhaus. It was a striker’s finish from a cente r-back who continues to demonstrate his value at both ends of the pitch.

Bayern Munich doubled its advantage just before halftim e. Nathaniel Brown delivered an excellent pass into Serge Gnabry, who squeezed his finish past Backhaus in the 42nd minute. T he goal was particularly significant for Gnabry, marking his 100th Bundesliga goal.

The visitors looked comfortable for much of the se cond half, but Freiburg refused to disappear quietly. Bayern squandered opportunities to put the game away, and the hosts received a lifeline in t he 82nd minute when Tom Bischof inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

Suddenly, Bayern Munich had a fight on its hands.

Jonas Urbig stepped up when it mattered, producing a crucial late save to prevent Freiburg from equa lizing. Then, in stoppage time, Olise capitalized on a costly Backhaus mistake to seal the 3-1 victory in the 5th minute of added time.

It was not always pretty, but Bayern Munich showed resilience when the pressure m ounted. With Kompany’s health rightfully taking priority, his team delivered three valuable points, reclaimed first place, and set itself up for a massive showdown with Dortmund.

Sometimes, getting the job done is what matt ers most.
