The entire footballing world will tune in to watch the season’s first El Clasico tonight as Barcelona play hosts to Real Madrid at Camp Nou.

It will be a consequential match in the context of the title race, with Barça currently having a comfortable six point lead, which could extend to nine points if they win tonight.

The match could see additional flare due to the rising animosity between the two clubs over the past couple of years. And it appears Real Madrid are not holding back at all, having fired yet another shot at Barça just hours ahead of the Clasico .

RMTV’s latest shot at Barcelona

Heading into tonight’s game, a special show from the RMTV+ has once again highlighted how referees are often unfavourable towards the club.

The show specifically took aim at the referees appointed for this game.

> “Everything suggests that it will not be a normal match. What hopes we can have? The referee has filed a complaint against us in the past, while the VAR referee was involved in Carlos Romero’s violent tackle on Mbappe ,” the presenter of the show said.

He went further still, drawing a stark contrast with their rivals when it comes to decisions going their way.

> “Real Madrid fans have no hopes from the referees. We and Barça are polar opposite in benefitting from refereeing decisions.”

The man in the middle

The official at the centre of the storm is Juan Martinez Munuera, the 44-year-old from Benidorm, who will be assisted on VAR by Javier Iglesias Villanueva.

History offers Real Madrid some comfort. Martinez Munuera has taken charge of four previous Clasicos, with the Whites winning three and Barcelona just one.

In each of those three Madrid victories, he awarded a penalty in their favour, while never once pointing to the spot for Barcelona across the four meetings.

His record overall is similarly favourable towards Los Blancos , having overseen 46 Madrid games for 30 wins, compared to 24 wins from 37 Barcelona matches. This season, he has refereed one fixture for each side, both ending in victory.

Whether those trends hold on the night remains to be seen.
