FC Barcelona now know the extent of Dani Olmo’s injury. The midfielder was forced off during the first half of Tuesday’s match against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.
Now, according to Carlos Monfort of SPORT , Olmo is expected to be sidelined for around four weeks after suffering an impact-related tear to his adductor, dealing a significant blow to Hansi Flick at a demanding stage of the season.
What happened to Olmo?
The incident occurred around the 26th minute of Barcelona’s 4-2 loss to PSG in the UEFA Champions League last night.
Olmo was stood on by PSG midfielder Vitinha and fell to the ground after landing awkwardly on his leg. The midfielder was clearly in pain and received treatment from Barcelona’s medical staff.
Although he tried to assess whether he could continue, he was ultimately unable to do so, and Fermin Lopez came on in his place.
Concern about the injury was evident from the outset . There was an unease about the Spain international’s condition after the game, particularly given the discomfort he appeared to be experiencing as he left the pitch.
Four weeks out
Now, tests have revealed that Olmo has suffered an adductor tear, although an official update is still awaited.
The expected recovery period is four weeks, although Olmo’s progress will determine when he can return to action.
The setback comes just as Olmo was beginning to rediscover his best form. The midfielder had recently ended his goal drought, helping rebuild his confidence after an early part of the season in which he had been looking to regain his influence.
Starting against PSG offered him an opportunity to build on that progress. Instead, his involvement lasted just 27 minutes, depriving Barça of one of their most effective players at arriving in the opposition penalty area from deep.
The biggest concern, however, is the impact on the upcoming fixture list. Olmo will miss Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid, a match that will be crucial in the La Liga title race.
The injury presents another challenge for Flick, who must now find alternatives during a decisive period of the campaign, having recently lost the likes of Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde to injuries as well.
