Luis Enrique believes Paris Saint-Germain’s ability to adapt under pressure proved decisive in their 4-2 Champions League victory over Barcelona , with the French side’s defensive work helping them secure Hansi Flick’s first defeat of the 2026/27 season.
Despite the result, the PSG manager was impressed by Barcelona’s level and admitted that the contest became increasingly demanding as the match progressed.
His assessment also highlighted a key feature of the victory: PSG’s ability to disrupt Barcelona’s possession game without losing their composure when the visitors threatened to take control.
Enrique explains what made Barcelona difficult to beat
Barcelona entered the contest in outstanding form, having won their opening 11 matches of the season.
Their technical quality and ability to control possession presented PSG with a stern examination, even on home soil.
Luis Enrique had anticipated that challenge, stressing that facing a team of Barcelona’s calibre requires more than simply imposing a preferred style of play.
> “I expected it. It was a very even match. You can’t imagine Barça’s level until you’re playing them. Against teams of your level or higher, you have to know how to adapt,” he noted.
The PSG coach felt his side managed the opening period effectively but acknowledged that Barcelona created a difficult spell after the interval.
> “We controlled the first half well, but in the second half we had 10 or 15 minutes of suffering.”
PSG’s pressing neutralised Barcelona’s attacking threats
One of the most revealing aspects of Luis Enrique’s analysis was his emphasis on the collective defensive contribution of his forwards.
Rather than focusing solely on their attacking output, he praised their work in disrupting Barcelona’s build-up and recovering possession high up the pitch.
> “The forwards did a great job defensively; we were superior in winning back possession in the opposition’s half.
> “To take the ball away from Lamine, Fermin, or Dani Olmo, support is essential,” he assessed.
Enrique maintains Barcelona allegiance despite PSG success
Furthermore, Luis Enrique’s connection to Barcelona remains an important part of his identity, and he made no attempt to distance himself from the club after overseeing their defeat.
However, he also emphasised his professional responsibilities at PSG and his satisfaction with the result.
> “I’m a Barça fan, but I’m a professional and I enjoy the team’s victories.”
Despite his status as a two-time Champions League winner, the manager concluded by warning that complacency could undermine his team’s progress.
> “It would be the first trap if we think we’re the best or that we’re special,” he concluded.
