Fermin Lopez has earned his place as FC Barcelona’s preferred attacking midfielder under Hansi Flick through consistently strong performances.
His energy, intelligent runs and ability to arrive in goalscoring positions make him an extremely valuable player in Flick’s system.
So far this season, the German manager has shown a clear preference for starting the 23-year-old in big matches.
However, Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with PSG at the Parc des Princes presents a different challenge.
Barcelona will face one of Europe’s most technically proficient midfields. Against Luis Enrique’s side, controlling possession could be as important as creating chances.
Given the defensive challenges facing Flick , Barcelona’s best approach may be to dominate possession and limit PSG’s time on the ball.
Why PSG’s midfield presents a unique challenge
PSG’s midfield trio of Vitinha, Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz are as good as it gets when operating under pressure.
Vitinha frequently drops between the defenders, or close to them, to initiate attacks, while Neves and Fabian rotate between deeper and advanced positions.
Their constant movement makes it difficult for opponents to track them on the pitch and keep their marking plans in check.
Ousmane Dembele also tends to drop away from the forward line to create an overload in midfield and provide additional passing options centrally.
This presents a problem for Barcelona’s midfield structure.
Rodri and Pedri are bound to operate as the defensive midfielders but if the attacking midfielder is isolated higher up the pitch, Barcelona run the risk of being overrun in midfield.
Fermin may be an intense presser who can contribute more defensively. However, his natural tendency is to attack space and not drop towards the ball, which is a major risk against PSG.
Olmo, on the other hand, offers a different solution.
How Olmo can help Barcelona control possession
Olmo’s greatest advantage in this particular match-up is his ability to function as an additional midfielder without sacrificing creativity.
Rather than remaining high between PSG’s defensive and midfield lines, he can drop alongside Pedri and Rodri to provide another passing option.
That movement could create a temporary midfield three, helping Barcelona escape PSG’s press through short combinations.
For example, if Neves presses Pedri while Ruiz closes down Rodri, Olmo can move into the space between them and offer another passing option.
Receiving on the half-turn would allow him to link up with Lamine Yamal or release the ball into the space vacated by an advancing PSG midfielder.
This, in turn, could force PSG into difficult decisions. If another midfielder follows Olmo deeper, Barça can exploit the space behind him.
If PSG hold their positions, the 28-year-old can receive, turn and operate in the half-spaces, where he is among the world’s best.
His close control and positional awareness also make him particularly useful against opponents who press aggressively.
More importantly, unlike an interior such as Gavi or Frenkie de Jong, Olmo can still choose when to stay higher up and operate as a traditional No. 10.
Fermin’s qualities could be decisive later
Starting Olmo does not mean abandoning Fermin’s strengths.
The Spaniard remains one of Barcelona’s most effective players at attacking the penalty area, pressing opponents and exploiting gaps between defenders.
Those qualities could become especially valuable in the second half, when fatigue begins to affect PSG’s pressing intensity.
Fermin’s willingness to make repeated runs beyond the striker would offer Barcelona a different attacking dimension as spaces begin to open up.
Ultimately, this selection should be about the demands of the opponent rather than the overall hierarchy between the two players.
Fermin may deserve his status as Barcelona’s first-choice No. 10, but Olmo’s technical security makes him the better fit for this match.
Barcelona’s best route to victory against PSG could be to establish control with Olmo before introducing Fermin’s directness to exploit tiring opponents.
It remains to be seen how Flick sets up his starting line-up and whether Olmo gets the nod ahead of Fermin.
