Wayne Rooney's Reaction to ProRef's Statement About Haaland's Goal v Man Utd Goes Viral
· GiveMeSport
Rooney made his feelings clear after English football's refereeing body admitted giving the goal was an error.
Manchester City beat fierce rivals Manchester United in their Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, with Erling Haaland's second half goal the difference between the two sides.
Haaland's goal on the hour-mark was initially disallowed for offside, but that decision was overturned following intervention from VAR and the goal allowed to stand, despite Enzo Fernandez standing in an offside position and making a play for the ball.
The decision to allow the goal caused a serious stir, with many pundits, including Man City legend Joe Hart, believing that the referees had made the wrong call.
After going ahead, 10-man Man City held on to clinch a hard-fought 1-0 victory and all three points.
The Premier League Match Centre account on X initially explained why VAR had intervened, acknowledging that Fernandez was in an offside position but that he did not play the ball.
ProRef, English football's refereeing body, has now admitted that VAR made the wrong decision and that the goal should not have counted.
Their statement read:
> "Following the incident in the 60th minute of Sunday's Premier League fixture between Manchester United and Manchester City at Old Trafford, we can provide clarification regarding Erling Haaland's awarded goal.
> "The on-field decision was offside against Erling Haaland - that was checked by VAR and he was found to be in an onside position.
> "In the same attack, it was established that Enzo Fernandez did not play the ball and therefore that makes any offside offence subjective, however, on this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review. > > "Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgement. A review of the incident will take place."
Man United legend Wayne Rooney made his feelings clear about the decision to allow the goal and ProRef's statement on Match of the Day.
The 40-year-old did not hold back as he said:
> "I'm just so sick of VAR. I think it's horrendous. It takes all the emotion out of the game, the energy that the game is played with.
> "To not see that and recognise that Enzo Fernandez is in an offside position... anyone who has played the game at any level understands that and knows that he is an offside position. To get it so wrong... It's baffling."
Danny Murphy chimed in: "It is a really bad one. Gernerally we try here to give them the benefit of the doubt. But you can't with this one."
Man United's defeat leaves them languishing in 13th in the Premier League table having picked up just four points from their opening four matches.
Man City, meanwhile, have won all four of their matches to start the campaign and are only behind reigning champions Arsenal at the top of the table on goal difference.
