Real Madrid have had a mixed start to the season, with several performances leaving much to be desired.
Their defensive structure has attracted criticism at times, with Dean Huijsen receiving a red card in an important match against Atletico Madrid.
Jose Mourinho is said to have identified one particular weakness in Huijsen’s game that is preventing him from becoming a guaranteed starter.
According to Defensa Central , Mourinho believes the Spanish centre-back must become physically stronger in individual duels.
Mourinho wants Huijsen to improve physically
Huijsen initially impressed following Mourinho’s arrival , appearing to rediscover his best form under the Portuguese coach.
However, his red card against Atletico Madrid disrupted that momentum. He subsequently missed the Villarreal encounter through suspension and started on the bench against Roma.
Antonio Rudiger has since strengthened his case for a starting position, while Eder Militao’s return from injury has increased competition.
The report claims Mourinho wants Rudiger, Militao and Ibrahima Konate to push Huijsen in training and help him develop greater physical strength.
The manager is reportedly concerned about the youngster’s struggles against powerful forwards, particularly in matches against Elche and Atletico Madrid.
His mistakes in the derby, including conceding a penalty and receiving a red card, have done little to help his cause.
Nevertheless, Huijsen’s ability on the ball remains highly valued. He is considered Madrid’s strongest ball-playing centre-back.
He offers composure in possession and the ability to initiate attacks from deep, something the other central defenders may not be as adept at doing.
Competition could bring out Huijsen’s best
Huijsen’s passing ability gives Madrid something different, particularly when the team struggle to progress the ball through midfield.
However, that technical quality cannot compensate for consistently losing physical battles against opposition forwards.
With Rudiger, Militao and Konate competing for just two positions, Mourinho has little reason to overlook defensive shortcomings.
The encouraging aspect is that Mourinho continues to have faith in Huijsen and is willing to keep him in his plans.
At his age, occasional mistakes should be treated as part of the learning process rather than evidence that he cannot succeed.
If Huijsen can combine defensive authority with his quality in possession, he could become a complete central defender.
It remains to be seen how Mourinho develops the Spain international and how his role evolves in the coming matches.
