The first Clásico of the season upon us, and with six points already splitting the teams in La Liga , it’s an important one. We look ahead to Sunday’s game with our Barcelona vs Real Madrid prediction and preview.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid: The Key Stats
Barcelona are clear favourites to win Sunday’s Clásico, with the Opta supercomputer assigning them a 54.4% chance of victory over Real Madrid.
Lamine Yamal has eight goals in nine La Liga games this season, the most by any player under 20 years old at this stage of a campaign this century.
Kylian Mbappé has scored 12 goals in 10 games against Barcelona in all competitions; only Cristiano Ronaldo (20) and Karim Benzema (16) have scored more goals against the Blaugrana in the 21 st century.
Few rivalries in world football can match the animosity, theatre and sheer level of quality provided by El Clásico, and with José Mourinho back in the mix, Real Madrid’s clashes with Barcelona this season should be appointment viewing.
The first Clásico of the campaign takes place on Sunday at Camp Nou, with the pressure firmly on Madrid ahead of their trip to Catalonia.
While Barcelona have won their opening nine games in La Liga, making a serene start to their quest for a third straight title under Hansi Flick , Madrid are already six points off the pace as a consequence of defeats to Real Betis and Atlético Madrid.
Indeed, this is Madrid’s biggest negative points differential to the La Liga leaders this early in a campaign since 2012-13, when they sat eight points behind Barça after nine matchdays, and ultimately finished 15 points adrift in second, also under Mourinho.
So, Madrid’s margin of error is already slim coming into this game, and Mourinho has made no secret of his belief that Los Blancos have had things tough lately.
Following Wednesday’s 4-1 UEFA Champions League win over RB Leipzig, Mourinho immediately pointed out that Barça will have an extra 24 hours to prepare for Sunday’s match, having lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in a thriller on Tuesday.
Mourinho previously expressed outrage at the news that Vinícius Júnior will miss Sunday’s match, having been handed a four-game domestic ban following his red card for pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair during the recent win over Villarreal.
So, Mourinho must find alternative sources of attacking spark against the Blaugrana, although it should be said that Vinícius has been far from his electrifying best this season, only scoring once – and supplying three assists – in 11 matches across all competitions.
On the eve of the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony, Sunday’s match will see two of the main contenders go head-to-head, with Kylian Mbappé hoping to inspire Madrid and Lamine Yamal headlining Barça’s star-studded attack.
Mbappé has a phenomenal record against Barcelona, scoring 12 goals in 10 games against them in all competitions throughout his career (four in three outings for PSG, eight in seven for Madrid).
The only players to find the net more often against the Blaugrana this century are former Madrid icons Cristiano Ronaldo (20 goals) and Karim Benzema (16).
Yamal, meanwhile, has built on his FIFA World Cup success with Spain by taking things to a new level at the start of 2026-27. The teenage sensation has eight goals in nine La Liga appearances this campaign, the most by any player aged 20 or younger at this stage of a season in the 21 st century.
Since 31 August, Yamal’s 14 total goal involvements are the most by any player in Europe’s top five leagues, with teammate Raphinha (11) the only other player in double figures.
Barcelona have always been easy on the eye under Flick, but their attacking returns this season have been truly special, plundering 39 goals in the opening nine La Liga matchdays.
Only one team in the competition’s history has managed a better goalscoring start, with no side doing so since the Second World War – Sevilla netted 42 times in nine games at the beginning of 1940-41.
Barça are just the second team to win their first nine games at the start of a La Liga season, after Madrid did so way back in 1968-69, and they now have a chance to make history, as no team has ever won their first 10.
Now, the prospect of making a piece of Spanish football history at their arch-rivals’ expense, while opening up a nine-point gap in the table in the process, will offer huge motivation to everyone of a Blaugrana persuasion.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid Head-to-Head
Barcelona have won their last two home games against Madrid in La Liga. The most recent Clásico, in May, saw Flick’s side wrap up the title as since-departed duo Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres netted in a 2-0 victory that sparked huge celebrations in Catalonia.
Only once in the 21 st century have Barça achieved three consecutive home victories against Madrid in the competition, doing so under Pep Guardiola between 2008 and 2010.
However, Madrid have won three of their last six away games against the Blaugrana in La Liga (L3), as many victories as they managed across their previous 16 visits to Camp Nou in the league (W3 D6 L7).
And Los Blancos will be hoping for some Mourinho magic as he takes charge of his first Clásico in 13 years.
Mourinho ended his first stint in charge of Madrid by going unbeaten throughout his last five matches against Barça in all competitions (W3 D2).
And he could now become just the third Madrid coach to enjoy a six-game unbeaten streak in this fixture, after Miguel Muñoz between 1962 and 1965 (seven matches, W7) and Vicente del Bosque between 2001 and 2003 (seven matches, W2 D5).
Barcelona vs Real Madrid Prediction
Given Barcelona’s swashbuckling start to the campaign, it is no surprise to see them favoured by the Opta supercomputer on home soil.
Across 10,000 pre-match simulations conducted by the model, Flick’s team were victorious in 54.4% of scenarios, with Madrid assigned a 26.1% chance of an away win, and a 19.5% likelihood of earning a point.
