Jose Mourinho is considering a significant change to Real Madrid’s midfield for their La Liga encounter with Sevilla.
The established midfield partnership of Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni is no longer guaranteed to start together.
Mourinho has so far retained faith in the much-criticised pairing, but according to Diario AS , he is considering starting either Eduardo Camavinga or Bernardo Silva against Sevilla.
Valverde and Tchouameni partnership under scrutiny
Valverde and Tchouameni offer Madrid considerable physical strength, defensive coverage and the ability to recover possession.
However, their partnership has attracted criticism for its limited influence in possession and inability to control the tempo of matches.
Both players are effective in their respective roles, but neither naturally dictates the rhythm of matches in the manner of a traditional playmaker.
That has occasionally left Madrid relying too heavily on individual attacking quality to move the ball into dangerous areas.
Against opponents who defend compactly, the absence of a midfielder capable of consistently finding passes between the lines can become particularly noticeable.
Camavinga and Bernardo offer different solutions
Camavinga would provide greater mobility and the ability to escape pressure through his dribbling and close control.
His inclusion could help Madrid progress the ball more effectively while retaining much of the defensive intensity Mourinho values.
Bernardo Silva, meanwhile, represents a more creative alternative. His technical security and ability to operate in tight spaces could help Madrid exert greater control in midfield.
Having arrived from Manchester City in the summer, Bernardo has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.
A start against Sevilla would give him a chance to revive his faltering Los Blancos career.
Mourinho needs more than physicality in midfield
The potential change feels overdue, particularly with Madrid approaching a demanding run of fixtures that includes El Clasico.
Valverde and Tchouameni are individually important players, but Mourinho must determine whether using them together provides the right balance against every opponent.
Madrid’s problems in possession cannot be solved simply by changing personnel, but a player like Silva could make a difference.
Bernardo is arguably the more intriguing option against a Sevilla side Madrid will expect to dominate, although Camavinga’s form also makes a strong case for his inclusion.
The Valverde-Tchouameni partnership has enjoyed considerable trust. However, changes are needed, and it remains to be seen who Mourinho chooses against Los Rojiblancos .
