This episode of Stick to Football is brought [music] to you by Sky Bet. >> The one live. Was it Hernandez? >> Right. Concentrate YouTube. We are on air. We're here in our Brooklyn screening room and it's the overlap England Argentina watch along and I'm joined by Roy and Ian and Ian's a little bit tense just slumped over there and he's slumped in his chair over there. Ian, talk me through the team use to start with. I'm I'm not bad shocked but I am shocked he's taken he's taken Ponza and O'Reilly out of the team. We'll talk about Rogers in a minute and Madwicki and Saka, but just the defense to start with. I I just think that again he's he's he knows the team. He's seen them training. He knows what he's he's looking for. He looks someone like Jed Spence, you know, with his defensive qualities, he's you know, I mean, his speed, you know, you look at that, you probably think that's that's something that he he's um he needs in there. And the same with I don't know, Jon Stones, you know, I'm surprised with the console one, but I'm I'm I'm totally at ease with with um with Jon Stones, honestly, with especially the way he played in that last game. Obviously, he started a little bit rusty, but then as the game went on, he just got better and better. >> So, I'm not really fussed about that >> cuz he's been chopping. >> Yeah, he has been chopping and changing, but everybody seems like they've they're ready to go, G. >> We've changed our defense, I think, every game. >> Yeah, but it's >> he probably looks at the way the results have done, [clears throat] it's working. >> And I think when you're chopping and changing, >> at least he's bringing freshness into it. You know, lads having been playing to five, six, seven games. So, I think it's a strong looking. >> It does look I like it. is Jed Spence at left back because if you think about where Messi plays and he cuts in on that left foot, obviously Jed Spence can wait for him, wait for him on his right foot and it's more of that >> again. Yeah, because again you look [clears throat] at Argentina and the way they want to play, they they don't use their width. So everybody you look at even Rhys James, Reys James coming off the right, he could go inside so he'll put another extra man in the in the in the midfield. Even Morgan Rogers, I always speak about but he'll drop in. So there'll be bodies in that midfield, you know what I mean? And then you got Jed Spence who I think as a one-on-one man. We are talking about Messi. I'm not saying he's manmarking Messi, but he'll be able to go in there and deal with that like we saw him do in the Mexico game. He done a lot of tackling in that area. >> There's a lot of power and speed in that team, isn't there? >> And >> James, when James come on midfield in a fullback, he looks so powerful and Spence done well when he's come on. >> That's why the only shock for me probably really is KZA not being in for Stones. I thought that, you know, think of Alvarez in that other channel, you would have thought Alvarez against Konza >> with >> Yeah, but then if you're talking about Alvarez on that channel coming in like he did the other day, even coming in on someone like Reese James who's obviously he's fit and ready to go. I would fancy Reese James trying to pick him up. >> Yeah, >> I'm quite comfortable with that. >> And then what do we think of Mad Wacki and Saka? We were always thinking during the tournament it's going to be one of them two on the right hand side with the left foot. >> He's now gone Morgan Rogers. Rogers for the first time in the tournament really. Yeah. Why? Why is he Why has he done that? He He said it's a gut instinct. It's a feeling. It's a It's just the manager. >> That's what the manager say. >> I like that. [clears throat] >> I like that when a manager comes sometimes decisions are >> because sometimes not much between the wide players etc. and it's just something a bit different again physicality, height. He had that shot the other so sometimes just little details and it is that gut feeling because sometimes that certain players are playing at that level. They're going there's not really much between them. >> So a manager will follow his gut feeling. >> I think he plays that he can play that role as well. Villa and I think with what's how tall Martin is he's what five 5'9 five maximum he's like something 6'2 can you imagine if he comes in on that back post you get someone on the right hand side maybe Gordon like we saw him do float one in for Harry Kane he floats into the back post you got Morgan Rogers on the back post with Lando Martinez >> do you think he's playing a right footer on that side to tuck in a little bit as well with obviously Argentina being so narrow in >> I think yeah probably could be you know could be I hope so >> but again don't be overthinking again the manager looked at him he's working for And he's dangerous. Go back to he obviously is a good >> he's dangerous. >> You're talking about that gut feeling and and trust obviously trust him to go and do a job and what a game to troll him in. So Argentina have made one change. I'm not sure it's a if it's a little bit of excuse language shitery but they wanted to get a Simeon against England. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> Diego is not playing as >> Yeah. Yeah, [clears throat] but go I said it. I said that, you know, I mean, I'd love this to be just a game of football where it's two teams, you know, going up against each other without everything that comes with an Argentinian team and what they do. But we know that they make it difficult. They they they make it a game of gamesmanship and [ __ ] You got the fans, the fans, you know, again, I spoke to I mentioned it yesterday. They're not segregated. They're together. I think there's going to be chaos up there. I think there's going to be chaos on the pitch. I think that anything that they can do to try and disrupt what we what we're capable of doing and I think that our physicality might be bit a bit too much for them as well. >> It is strange they haven't separated the supporters, isn't it? >> Crazy. Crazy. >> What game all day? Look at all the >> honestly cuz you can you imagine what's going to happen if >> the goal goes in. Yeah. >> If England score and they start celebrating. If Argentina score, you know what the lads are like? They might get a bit upset and I just think it's a silly it's a it's a poor move. >> We've all lost our discipline in football matches, haven't we? >> [laughter] >> Mhm. What how do England go I mean what what sort of game do Argent they want it to be a game where it's a little bit stop start ill disciplined feisty is does that >> you have to embrace that >> could we could we deal with that >> yeah you have to again play on the edge but try not to do anything silly >> it's easier said we're sitting here with a cup of tea in front of us saying you don't go don't cross that line but when you're out there and if lads are dragging your jersey or going in late yeah >> you will get frustated >> the thing is that they're aware of it >> would you be surprised Are you thinking there'll definitely be >> I think I think there's going to be there might be a red card involved. I think there's going to be a penalty involved. >> I think something's like that's going to happen. >> They'll try and go for Jude. >> I think they try and go for Jude because Jude has shown he's got that personality where he plays. He's on the edge. He's ready to go. He, you know, I mean, he he'll fly into those. >> Have you ever seen him overreacting? >> I've never seen him overreact, but um we're talking about the Argentinians. Did Simeone with Bex? >> Yeah, Bex is on. >> Hey, Bex. How you doing? So just just on on Messi, this is the first time England have ever played against Messi. Just I I think there is an element of when we played for England, I don't know whether you felt the same righty or you did Roy when you played sometimes against like Brazil or one of the teams that are sort of like the giants of world football. >> Is there an aura thing about when he walks out now at the front of that line for Argentina that the England players are going to have to deal with as well? That presence? There is, isn't there? There's that element of if he's there. >> That's part of the challenge. Yeah, that's part of the challenge. You know what I was thinking right I wish they weren't playing in the blue and white kit because that's got something about it as well. If they were playing in the normal blue one it wouldn't bother me so much but when you see I remember even just playing in friendlies against Brazil and France we had to play in the tomo and seeing them in the Brazil kit and then seeing France in the there's a different aura about them. It you make you feel like oh my gosh look >> but you were like that when you saw the Man United kit weren't you [laughter] >> scary. >> No it wasn't scary. Yeah, but then England have to look at their players as Kane and go, "Yeah, yeah, we've got some mads who are >> Arian energy, ain't they?" They've got that energy. >> The at the top. Yeah, they've got Do you talk about players being sent off? They've got a couple that you you you'd look to try and get involved, don't you? We see Romero and Landro Martins quite a lot. I mean, they're they're aggressive as hell. >> Would you, if you were Bellingham and Kane, sort of niggle them a little bit. Would you try and >> you know something with Romero? >> You know, I'd be wary about trying to be somebody or not. >> Yeah, I think >> I think Kane's got it in him. Oh, yeah. But do it naturally. Don't go looking. Don't bring it on. Because you look at someone like Mor Romero, >> he's somebody that just do it himself. He's You don't need to wind him up or anything. You just need to just be in and around him and he'll just do something, >> you know? I think that someone like Jude gets in and around him >> or even he'll do something. >> No, but I think play your own game, but if they come looking for trouble, obviously be ready for it, but don't go looking for it. Like that's put that on them >> cuz that's their game. So, you won't know this, but basically before the games that we do uh for ITV during the tournaments, we always have a little sweep steak. So, we're going to do Kieran bring in the little mug with the little things and we're going to do a little sweep steak. Me roying in and pick like he loves it. >> Has the money's got the money charity though, is it? >> Oh, we don't do Where's the money going? I thought to where's the money going? Friendly friendly one. >> Where's the money going? >> There's something to knack going on there. You were looking at that, right? >> I wasn't looking at it. >> What number are you in? >> Two. Right. You're number two. Yeah. Roy, >> what number are you? >> Have a guess. Have your course is a fix. >> And it's fixed because you're one girl. >> Fixed already, Kieran. >> So, how it goes, right? >> I got [clears throat] number one. >> You work for FIFA. [laughter] >> So, I'm number one. So, I get to pick the first score. Uh Ian, you get to pick the next. Ro, you then get two and then you come back in. They come back to me. >> So, I think the score is going to be >> in 90 minutes. Right. >> 90 minutes. 90 minutes score only. I'm going to go. My first score is going to be England to Argentina one. >> See, you I know he's going to pick the the proper most popular score. You know what I'm going to go with? >> What you going to go with? >> I know exactly what you're going to say. >> I'm going to go I'm [snorts] going to go 1-1 in 90 minutes. >> One in 90 minutes. >> What did I say he'd go? >> Yeah. 1-1. What you going to do like the beo? Um >> I'm going to go you and 2-1 England. >> Yeah, >> I'll go 2-1 Argentina. >> Even though I think I think 111's a good shot, but >> Thank you. He took it. And I get another go now. >> You get another go now. Yeah, >> I go um >> I go Desmond >> 22. >> That's what I was >> 22. So Roy's got Royy's got two Argentina. He's got 2-2. Ian's got 1-1. I've got two-1 England. >> You got the next pick. >> We should write this down. >> Is it you? >> No, it's you. It's you. >> I'm going to go 3-2 England. >> 3-2 England. >> Yeah. >> I'm going to go >> What's it go? >> 3-2 England. >> Wow. >> I think if we could go 2-2, we could >> I'm going to go 1 nil. And they go 1 nil England. >> Yeah. Yeah. I was thinking >> see that's a go. I don't know. This is >> You don't think you're going to go? >> This hasn't go. This isn't got one nil. This isn't a one- nil game. No way, Gary. What? >> Do you know what he's going to be? >> Do you think it's going to be >> honestly I think there's going to be goals in this game. Absolutely. This going to be a cha you're you're emotionally involved. Your head you don't know what to do. But do you like my picks though? My picks. >> One. Thank you very much. >> Roy, where are you? Your first your first selection of score then was Argentina winning. Is that because your head or your heart? >> No. No. No. Because you you win England. You win England to one, didn't you? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. That's why Listen, >> it's going to be t obviously >> they're walking out like there's no shock of obviously reference. >> Well, I just I think uh >> look him smiling. >> I think Messi might obviously be the difference. They'll edge it in a tight, but it'll be whoever wins it. I think it'll be obviously be tight. >> Righty Dean Rice, he's out there. How >> on a percentage? What what fitness level are we going to get for him today? Cuz he has been up and down in [clears throat] the >> Well, he he really looked in that last game, you have to say he looked really drained. You see it affected him. >> He did have a virus, didn't he? >> Absolutely. Absolutely. And it was must have been a bad one. But if if you can get 70% out of him, especially with the players that with the players he's up against, I think that our our midfield up against their midfield with Declan, even 70% I think will be it will be enough. >> No danger. >> Yeah, it's going to be a good game. >> I'm looking forward to the game. That's why I've been tense scale because it's one of those it's very difficult to call. You know, there's going to be some some [ __ ] going on. It's going to be interesting to see how we deal with that. But like I just want to see who's going to be the hero for England if we do win this. I love that that that kind of >> Do you think they're the worst to that? Cuz Mexico were up to no good as well. >> You know what? Mexico up to no good. But these guys >> Do you think they're not level? >> These guys are the the very highest level of doing it. I think Uruguans and Argentinians in my career were the players that to be fair it never went well if they were losing >> it and it it was just >> we saw parag when Argentina beat us in the 98 World Cup >> um when obviously you know Beex got sent off >> um after the game you both waiting outside to be transported away from the stadium you're both on the coach >> they were literally banging on the window at our coach teasing yeah teasing and going for us like you know I mean dancing and stuff and just like proper [ __ ] out. We wouldn't do that. We we sort of we would say that's lacking class, you know what I mean? They got knocked out, I think, the next game by Holland as well, I think. >> Yeah, >> if I remember rightly, but yeah, they are they >> it's it's part of their It's part of their It's part of their game. It's part of their preparations. It's what they do. >> They've got the cause as well. Don't want to bring sort of what we wars into, but they do have that cause as well that they fight for against England that was that's what they were singing back in the day in the 98 sort of tournament. [clears throat] They do have that cause that sort of like that spirit and fight about them that gives them something and >> but it's almost like [clears throat] because they're so patriotic, they want something to >> Yeah. >> They want something to be able to hold on to, to have something to >> to to to hate you for, to want to beat you for, to want to humiliate you. >> Are we going to have the volume up or what? >> Not for the national anthems. No, we can't have volume up apparently. It's a watch along. We've not got the rights yet. So we can't even we can't even hear the next can't we have it without the commentary. There's always a mode where you can just take the commentary off and have the noise. >> You were singing the American one like what you're when you're I had to I was at the baseball game. I had to [laughter] >> I had to do the whole lot. I was like this. I didn't know what to do. I didn't have people going to say he's disrespecting our anthem. >> You remember? >> I was like this. >> Ian, you were American for the first week in New York. [laughter] You were American. How does Beex keep getting tickets for? >> It's great to see Victoria clapping [laughter] and everything like she's really she's obviously involved now. >> Imagine England have played at the stadium. I already Argentina haven't. Is that is that an advantage that you've played there? >> What a stadium that is by the way as well. And but does it suit England having the roof on? I think it does it obviously. >> Yeah. Yeah. But when you say that like that you see like how we have Wembley. So we got Wembley and they have all the semi-finals at Wembley and the final. Do you think it would have been better if it was semi-finals at the Aztec and then the final at the Aztec? >> I just say about heat though. It's 37 degrees out there today. >> We would not have been good in that. >> It's Yeah, it's a good shot girl. >> We would not have been good. >> But you think it's advantage England already played at this stadium. >> Look at Look at him. Look at him going for it. >> Look at him. Look at him. >> Look at his eyes. Look at his eyes. >> I mean, look, seriously. Now, they've been told to do. Do you know what? Some days are >> Is this part of it? >> Yeah. Do you know what? Be careful with all this. >> No, I think >> Oh, that can be draining. Simeone's boys in. >> They are. They do look emotional there. The agent. >> They look very small though. Gal. >> Yeah, >> they look small. >> But they do look emotional, don't they? If you look at them, them eyes look like they're about to >> Going to cry. Wow. >> Like have a each one of them. >> I know. >> Oh my god. They're going for it. It's like a rugby. That was like a rugby national anthem. Was it was Oh god. >> Wow. >> Messi wasn't like that was he messy? >> No. No. Messi was >> Messi was the calm. >> No. No, he wasn't. Did you see him at the start? >> No, I didn't think he was. Oh yeah, he was up for it. >> See the handshakes. Let's see if it's a bit. >> It's the whole squad. It's just not the starting 11. >> Yeah, I remember Ree James's teammate like Enzo's teammate and everything. >> It's the whole squad. >> So small. >> Yeah, it is. >> We've got to surely do something. >> That's where Messi can sort of just mean >> it's a bad poor edit in there. >> Were you like that with me when I was at the front at United, >> you know? I loved when you done one time. There was one time I think you were playing Wolves in >> and you know Incy does that thing where he has to put the shirt on last and then come out last >> and Roy left him. >> Roy Yeah. Roy went like that and [laughter] just went out. >> We lost that game. >> We lost against Wolves. I think so. Yeah. >> In that game. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> Did not play. >> I didn't No, I was It was Was it before we went to >> I think we lost I think we lost. >> Was it before we went to Dubai on like on like a mid-season trip? >> I was watching. I was injured. >> That's probably why we lost, you know. [laughter] They were bottom of the league at the time, weren't they? >> Was it? >> I think so. Yeah. >> Was that the start of the gam
