Hello and welcome back to the transfer show brought to you by IG Trading and Investment. It's deadline day, people, and we're going to be live for the next hour or so to discuss the latest deals, rumors, and transfers going on as the January transfer window closes in the Premier League at 700 p.m. in just 2 hours time to discuss all things going on in this window. And over the last month or so, we've got an all-star lineup. The Athletics Carl Anker, Man United correspondent is in the building. Welcome back, Carl. >> Hello. How are you? >> I'm very well, thank you. I assume you're in a very good mood. >> I'm doing a very great mood. I have been doing the Kuna dance for several hours now. >> It's pretty addictive. I mean, me as a Sunland fan, I've been giving it a go as well. I think everyone's getting involved in it. Mikey McCubbin is here as well. Fellow Man United fan, no doubt. Delighted. And what's your role for the next hour or so, Mike? >> Uh, moral will most likely not be announcing any Man United transfers. Uh, it's been a very quiet month on that front. Uh but I will be keeping across all the latest breaking news and yeah potentially well not breaking it because I'm not the one breaking it but uh breaking on this show at least. So we'll see. 2 hours left the window. Uh and a few things up in the air. A few deals waiting to be completed. So yeah, we'll see how it goes. >> It could well be an exciting end to the window as well. Get your questions in the chat as well. Mikey will try and answer or ask them to us I say and Carl and we'll get a poll in there as well. It's going to be a lot of fun. But let's discuss the deal that's kind of grabbed the most headlines over the last well kind of week or so really. But it's come to a conclusion this weekend. Jeremy Jac looks like he's joining Liverpool. It's going to be confirmed hopefully in the next couple of hours, but in the summer Carl £55 million I believe it is up front. Another£5 million in add-ons. Chelsea were interested. It felt like a good old Premier League tugofwar for a player. >> Yeah, tug of war and and a swoop from from Liverpool. They've won the war for him. Um, I'm not the most fay with him, I must admit, but by everyone I've spoken to this morning when the deal was done, they're all going, "Good player, high potential. Price is a little bit surprising." Um, but that to me reads more about how it's 2026 now. 50 million now appears to be closest to the going rate for uh a very good center back. Every every sort of player, I mean, I'm still used to spending 15 million, but my age showing there, but this is good. Liverpool needed a center back. They didn't get the one they wanted in the summer window. Margui is now at Manchester City, but they're they're be beginning to build uh a new center back hierarchy and possibly maybe even a secession plan for when one of Virgo van Djk, Ibrahim Konate leaves or indeed the strange possibility maybe if they both leave leave at the same time. So, Shake through the door. Leone still recovering from his ACL injury. Two good center backs, two tall center backs as well. Um, so the Liverpool team beginning to address some of the more glaring holes in their squad, I think. >> Yeah, absolutely. It feels like they're going to sign at least two by four the end of the summer. So, they've got one through the door already. And Mike is Carl says, Ibrahim Manatee's form has been very up and down. It looks like he's probably most likely leaving the club unless there's a resolution to his contract situation. So, in the summer. So, Liverpool, as Carl says, they needed some center backs. >> Yeah, absolutely. I think it's it's a funny one, isn't it? because you know you sign Leone in the summer, you sign Jac now. So there's there's this possibility, you know, Gomez out injured at the moment as well, you know, no guarantees over what his future role is going to be at the club. So you have at the moment the possibility that Liverpool go into next season with Van Djk and two very young promising center backs, one coming off a huge injury, um, and one, you know, only playing his second full season of real top level football. Um, so I think yeah, it still feels like they're one short, but I guess getting this one done early, ready for the summer is a step in the right direction, but I do I do kind of see some of the the arguments about, you know, if they're paying this money, could they not have got him in right now? Um, I think Liverpool fans will be a little bit anxious around that, having seen Ghee go to Man City as well and with a really tight top four race on the go, too. So I certainly see those points but yeah I would expect Liverpool to yeah go in for another center back in the summer and on top of that I think there's just been such a you know it's been such a transitional period hasn't it? It's not just about the center backs and Canate potentially leaving. You know it's about the fact that Trent's left and you know that that right back slot has yet to be fully held down by someone at this moment in time. You look at the left back slot as well. Andy Robertson almost went to Spurs this January. Kirk still feeling his way there. So it it at the moment it still feels like there's going to be another transitional year next year for Liverpool's back line. Um but yeah, Jac does does sound great. Um there's like you know people have been comparing him to a young William Celiba. So that will get fans really excited. Um so yeah, good all round move I reckon. >> Yeah, that's the one that everyone will hope it's like isn't it? Celiba, Gabrielle. But there's been so many center backs that have arrived from Liga in the last few years. you know, Lenny Yuro, for example, a Kusenov, a Bachmann, people like Dassian, Badile as well that have either proven like they needed a little bit more time to develop or proven not quite good enough as well. I think Lenny Yuro is probably a case in point of does need a little bit more time to develop and and Jac's only ever started 29 league games. So, as we said at the top, 55 million pounds right now does feel like a lot, but Liverpool generally up until this summer at least have made pretty astute and quite instant successes as well. So we'll see what happens with Jac in the summer. But I suppose the ramifications of this car was Chelsea were also in the in the mix for him. They've recalled Anelmino from Dortmund. He's now gone to Strasborg and Mamadu Sar's come back to Chelsea. Were you surprised that they didn't go more strongly for a more experienced center half this January? >> This seems to be a common sentiment among the Chelsea fan base. It seemed I mean Enzo Mesa made no secret in fact he wanted another center back and I think that was a >> area of dispute between him and and the sporting directors at Chelsea. I think Chelsea have one of the problems of Chelsea they have a lot of center backs >> and yet if you look at the most complimentary partnerships it's not quite there. It doesn't quite gel the alchemy is not quite there. And one question I very often have on my whiteboard in my home office is who is your team strongest air quotes. Um, so who's who's your center back who wins the majority of their aerial jewels? Who's the one that is is a bit of a bully when things get down? And that's not necessarily your best one, but your physically strongest one. And for Chelsea, it seems like they've got a lot of young center backs, but no one who's really I suppose the one I want to use is street smart. And while Jac is very talented, from what I've been hearing, he will need to grow to build that sort of aerial dominance and that very much um quick ruthless tackling technique. So they've missed out on a very good player. I'm not sure if they've missed out on the player they need. The player they need is sort of FA before the ACL injury or indeed uh a slightly younger Thiago Silva to come back a sort of a pace setting or a tempo setting center back. The problem is those players are incredibly rare and it's not just Chelsea who want them. I'm sure Liverpool are looking for another center back in that mold who can sort of be the bridge between Jac and Kate and so on so forth. So yeah, really strange situation for Chelsea. Um just talking about Liverpool and Chelsea right now, I'm sort of scratching my head going, why on earth did Liverpool sell Gerald Kwanza? He he's the center back that so many of these clubs want a sort of third choice center back that can step in and do things quite easily. Obviously, I know why Liverpool sold him because they need to fund things elsewhere. But that sort of profile of a center back, I think, is uh becoming a little bit underrated, not just in terms of quality, but also in terms of what they can offer a dressing room. >> And we were reflecting before we went live on this stream that when you were on the deadline day stream in August, you talked about Liverpool potentially missing leg day. Was I the expression you used? I mean, that's been proven, I think, pretty correct. I mean, how do you kind of reflect on Liverpool's transfer business as a whole? because Echitique and Vertz in the last few weeks has been excellent as well. But do you think they did make a mistake not signing these defensive recruits or center back recruits in the summer? They absolutely need to get a center back last summer. Um, Margari was the one. I I think Liverpool for various reasons will probably regret the fact that they waited so long until the end of the summer deadline window before they made that move. And I if you talk to people of of important decision-making ability at Liverpool, they go, "Well, we tried all we could." and you going yes you did but also a bit like me when I was signing my university work why did you start this two weeks before the deadline instead of two months before the deadline etc etc etc the players they've bought are very good uh hug is fantastic and the goals he scored against Newcastle were phenomenal and I'm very annoyed that he's not playing for Manchester United because he's the exact sort of striker I'd love to have at Manchester United that's not to say I don't like Seso I just like Hugo Ekit a lot has taken a little bit longer than I thought to adjust but you're beginning to see more of his skills now. Um, and then unfortunately they've they've had to, as we've just spoken about before, they've had to not only rework their entire right flank, they've had to rework their left flank as well. And it's had a knock on effect for everyone else. So, I think the first couple weeks of the season, it looked as if that relationship between um, Kirz and Van Djk wasn't good well. And I I saw two or three offball runs Kirz was making where he wasn't really being spotted by other players. I think maybe Cheers saw him a little bit there, too. So there's very talented players in that Liverpool squad. I don't know how you make it a very talented starting 11 right now in that there's there's always one very good player who's the odd person out. Now, Liverpool fans were probably yelling at me saying, "Well, that's the point. That's the point of having a good squad." But I looked at the you look at their starting 11 uh against Newcastle, a very good performance, but also and it's subllight right back. >> Now, Subasai is a very good football player and if he wants to moonlight, if he's able to moonlight right back for now that Connor Bradley is injured, well done. But when everyone's fit, shouldn't Sublide be in midfield, but then you have to take Vert out or you have to take Mallister out or you have to take someone else out. Uh, and that's the interesting headache that Anna got to deal with there. So, loads of good players. How do you make a very good starting 11? I still can't quite figure that one out. >> Yeah, there was also talk over the weekend about Curtis Jones interesting into Milan because David Fesy was being talked about as a potential loan target for Nottingham Forest and I think around a 30 million pound option to buy. That move didn't materialize. I think Fertzy probably decided that he'd rather be an Inter Milan backup than a potential starter at Nottingham Forest in a relegation battle in the Premier League, which I can see the logic behind that as well. But Curtis Jones being of interest in Inter Milan's interesting as well because that's a player that I don't think ever has been a guaranteed starter at Liverpool despite having some really impressive performances. So maybe that's one for the summer as well to keep an eye on as well whether Curtis Jones will be a target of more of more you know uh stringent and more early planning from other clubs as well. >> I'm sure loads of clubs want him. I don't think Ann should let him go. >> No, I think if if you look at that Liverpool squad composition right now, Jones's ability to hold on to the ball in the middle >> is really really valuable. And I don't think Curtis Jones will be a starter for Liverpool next season or play more than 2,000 minutes. I think he can have such a valuable role. Um, >> yeah, fascinating football player. >> I really like watching him. >> It's a funny one as well cuz it just it just feels like that's something that we just will not that will if you want to, you know, >> really get roll the fans up in the wrong way. I think that that's the kind of player that you sell, right? does doesn't really make sense from any perspective unless you know you were to sell him for a really good price40 million pounds plus to a top European club in the summer because you know I think yeah he'd be great at Inter Milan for sure um on the basis that you have you know a big deal lined up for Anderson Watton a player of that caliber then I can kind of see it but even then you kind of think is there Is there not someone else you can shift to raise those funds? I know Cursus Jones as a as as an academy graduate, you know, is is more valuable on on the on the on the books um than other players, but yeah, it just feels like you've got a really really marvelous squad player there who I don't think is in any major rush to leave himself. Um loves the club. Yeah, it doesn't doesn't make sense to me at all. Yeah, I wonder whether he just thinks he could have been in England reckoning by now more consistently if he was playing more regular football. I really like Curtis Jones as well. Another transfer situation that's kind of been bubbling all window Mikey particularly over the last few weeks is the JP Mateta >> to Forest JP Mata to Milan. JP Mateta to Juventus as it stands right now as he as we're at 5:15. It doesn't look like Mateta's going anywhere. Well, I mean, he's not he's certainly not got not got not going to Milan. That's been called off after after that medical. Um, very quiet on the Juventus front as well. It's hard to say exactly whether that will definitely be happening or definitely not. The silence suggests that, you know, it's looking less and less likely. Um what we do know at least from from Skye's perspective is that Strand Lawson has completed his medical at Palace and is just finalizing his paperwork ahead of >> ahead of a 48 million pound move. Yeah. And and >> feels like you know that that might have something to do with Matessa's fitness that they're happy to get that deal over the line regardless. Um obviously Strand Lson you know plays in a a similar shape at least um at Wolves to Glasnner's system at Palace. Of course, Glasnner isn't going to be there as things stand in the summer. So, you know, will Strand Lson still be suited to that Palace side, but he has proven himself as a as a a Premier League goal scorer at least in his first season last year. You know, gone off the boil this season, but in a in a Wolves side that has on the whole gone off the boil. Um, younger than Mateta, better recent fitness record than Mateta. Um, so yeah, be interesting to see how he does. But yeah, Crystal Palace has yeah, weirdly kind of been the story of this January window, hasn't it? Um, you know, who who could have thought that back in September when they were still riding high off the FA Cup and and Community Shield and what were they about fourth or fifth in the Premier League, posting some of the best underlying numbers in the Premier League that it would come to January and things, you know, this this entire project seemed to kind of fall apart in about two weeks. Um, so yeah, interesting times for Crystal Palace. >> Yeah. I mean, Carl, how do you feel like Crystal Palace would be placed going forward if they have Mateta guaranteed until the summer by the sounds of things and then most likely to leave with a year left on his contract and seemingly wants to leave as well and Strand Lson for the rest of the season. Do you know do you think that they've ended up stronger in a forward area with Brennan Johnson having arrived as well? >> I think it helps. I think by what we're hearing from AC Milan in that Mateta seems to be carrying some sort of underlying issue or injury. Um the idea that L last coming in maybe it's not planned but if you can play a couple of games particularly in Europe as well that Thursday Sunday treadmill has been spoken about by so many managers now I remember speaking to Eric Hog about it when Manchester United were in the Europa League in 22 23 and he explained not only is it quite difficult in terms of the routine but also he said it knocks Friday out of your training day because Friday now is a recovery day whereas Friday when you're in a Champions League or if you're not playing in Europe uh can be video day or a training day and he said it makes prep for your Sunday matches that much more difficult or you need if you're in a away game, you're on a plane somewhere. So, if Stan Lson can take some of that burden, allows Mateta to build up whatever whatever ailment he's currently dealing with. He can rest up for that. I think that helps. By all accounts, it doesn't sound like Mateta is the sort of football player who will spit his dummy out. Um, and I think this is a big thing now for Crystal Palace in that when you have this collection of players and a manager who also has made it very open that he's leaving, can you make sure these players do not gown tools isn't the term for it. I suppose it's what flip-flops on the beach, >> right? You you don't want to have that slump. You don't want I It's a real shame the way the Crystal Palace Glazen Project is ending. But you want to do it in a way that when it does end, everyone can leave with their heads held high and you get pats on the back and you get claps rather than just, oh, we've finished 15th, 16th and everyone just sort of stopped playing football in January. I think Meta is is a very good professional, an aute professional and if the problem is the reason he's not running is because he can't run rather than the reason he's not running is he will not run. Strand Lson coming can help with that one. The really interesting thing with with Crestle Powers to me right now is I mean it was only I want to say last year while Oliver Glazner was talking to Paul Merson saying I play 343 not because that's my preferred system but because that's built for Chris's squad. I think he's spoken before about how his favorite formation is actually a 442 and he's also like many other coaches said formations don't really matter. It's about intention and profile. Um but now I'm looking at Crystal Palace. I'm looking at the players who are injured. And I'm looking at the players who have gone and I'm sort of scratching my head going back four maybe >> a 442 with Mateta and Shan Larson. I'd like to see it once. >> Yeah, >> bit of a throwback to the naughties there. That'd be great to watch. I think they also haven't necessarily signed a natural geki replacement just yet as well. So the the weaker at center back for sure. I mean, in terms of the options
