grant to me the boss as he celebrates his 20 years with the club. So, we're going to go through bad moments, good moments, and also can he [music] finally win the league again? Let's go and meet him. Thanks for having me and us. First and foremost, congratulations [music] on the on the 20 years. And there's something that I want always wanted to ask you is, you know, not so much as a as a team. Obviously, me being part of it and and and after following it from from the outside, but you as a coach, as a coach, your best moment and worst moment. >> Uh the best moment is maybe when we won the first title after I think the invincible year because the dream of every coach, I think, is to make uh a spotless year. And I always thought you never know how well you have done as a coach as long as as you lose games, you know. So, there's not much room for improvement. So, 2004 was exceptional. And uh because you had everything, the players had the individual quality, you were a team, we had the uh natural collective spirit. It was just exceptional. A moment that you never have in your career, basically. >> You said the first uh double also. Why exactly? >> Because I came uh to England completely unknown. Arsene who? I was a bit French when I arrived, you know. And there was a lot of skepticism around uh uh about my appointment. And just to know that I can win uh was something very important because I could convince people that I I have a chance to do a good job here. >> And the worst? >> Uh one of the worst moments It the year when we lost it Man United. Uh because it was the moment where you felt just the championship is lost, you know, and uh it's a game we couldn't afford to lose and not to turn up on the day. You wonder what did I do wrong there? What didn't work and uh uh the game we were expected absolutely to win. I I You you had to win it, but uh I felt that more than losing the game we were not in the races on the day. >> So, if if I said to you 4-4-2 >> Yeah. >> to a 4-2-3-1 It depends on how if the wingers are high or not, so it depends it depends on the So, why did you change your 4-4-2? Because I know that 4-4-2 since Monaco. I've played in the 4-4-2 a bit at the end in the Champions League when we went to the final, we changed it. >> Mhm. >> But uh why why did you change it? Is it because of personnel or or the game was changing basically? >> Uh the game has always been the same. I adapted to the personality of the players I have. We played 4-4-2 with Dennis Bergkamp who was a a striker, but uh when he played with you, he became already a 4-2-3-1 a little bit and and uh but as well mainly I changed because in the Champions League I felt that uh we lost sometimes the midfield, you know, and uh that we suffered a lot. And as well uh when you were there, uh it depends on the individual quality of a striker who can create something on his own. Uh so, I felt that uh we could play with one more player in midfield and still be dangerous. And as well at the time we had players like Freddie Ljungberg who had deep runs from deep, you know, and uh so, it was a little bit like playing with two or three strikers sometimes. >> So, if if I if I 20 years obviously we are just celebrating that and and that was amazing. But, is it fair to say now it's not almost fair is it's a fact that the first 10 years were more prolific than the following 10 years? >> Of course, much more. >> Did you think that it was going to take that long to to to win a title again or you knew it was going to be that hard? >> Never I thought it would take us so much time uh to win trophies again, but uh were was two contributing factors. The first one is that uh we built a new stadium and you were placed to know that we had restricted finances, had to sell our best players. And uh the second one is that uh big investors came in at the same time uh like Chelsea, like Man City after who uh were hugely ambitious and uh we were not uh anymore the club who who could basically compete with them on the financial From today it's different. But, today you have so many investors that everybody is basically nearly on an equal level again. But, for years I must say you know uh it was the most difficult years because I had created the level of expectation and uh I thought that we had not anymore the same potential to compete. And when you always on the back foot, always to justify why don't you win anymore the championship and I can understand that because that's a normal request for for somebody who loves Arsenal. >> So, boss do you think that uh the team that you have right now is well equipped to to compete for the title this year? >> I believe so, yes. I believe we are more mature, we are better equipped, we have a a squad who is not anymore made of kids, but a squad made of uh mature players who have experience and uh it's down who, showed how consistent we will be. And that is down to produce producing the performances every three days now. >> I I I will I will you know obviously as you know boss I follow the team. There's something that I love this season without being disrespectful is Sanchez playing up front. I think he gives the team another dimension. Why Sanchez in the middle this season? Now it's a big thing for me because there's something I always was thinking you know why not putting him in the middle and why this season? Is it because Welbeck is injured? Theo doesn't want to play there anymore? >> of all I had the big competition uh up front because I thought Welbeck could play there. Giroud was playing there with different qualities. And uh you know I reflected at the end of the season a long time and uh I decided to try it with Sanchez. There's a bit similarities with Suarez, you know. And uh he goes at you uh he's and uh at the start I must say as well many people questioned that decision, you know. But uh I'm happy that you you like him there. >> but I always thought boss that he he he has all the attributes to to bring something different to that team because he has a different style of play. And what I like with him is he can see a pass, too. >> Yes. >> That that's that's very important that people don't notice a lot with him. >> Yes, I uh but I I must say the few times I tried him before it was not convincing. So uh in this position. So you think is that the wrong decision? Or do I have to give him more time, you know? And in the first two games I was not completely convinced but now game after game he's growing into this position and uh getting better and better and uh where he's strong at, he can dribble, he can finish, he can as well give a final ball. >> I mean, it's it's it's I know that Mustafi also was something what he needed is a run of game to find his is is, you know, where, how, when to give the ball, movements. And and I and I think that's the the the the biggest in bracket difference this year also. Mustafi at the back, you know, Xhaka in the middle when he plays. I think that's the the the the solidity now of the team looks more, you know, there is a better solidity I think in the team now. >> It looks like I agree with you, but uh uh the impression you have and I have uh has to be confirmed now by a consistent attitude. I think the team has a good spirit, they want to do well. But you know that you have disappointments during the season, and it's always the way the champion responds strongly uh to disappointments. And uh we have to show that uh that you are capable to do that. And as well, let's not forget the competition is of a very high level, you know, you have uh many teams in the Premier League now at the top who can really compete for the title. >> And there was one thing that a question I actually never ask you myself as a player because because people don't care about the boss. It's it's it's it's it's it's it's true. People don't ask the boss anything. They just want to know you have to front always for the team. You have to answer to to the press, to the to the fans, to the board, to to the players sometimes that come and knock on your on your door like I used to do about about whatever problem it was. But but I wanted to ask you, how are you? And not the how are you, yes, I'm fine. How are you? 20 years. 20 years and plus the years before. It's hard to deal with that. So, how are you? Who helps the helper? What's the secret? >> Uh the secret is my passion for the game. The fact that I love some I think I am an optimist about human being. I believe that uh uh that helped me to survive. And as well, I think I have quite a good resistance to stress. You know, when you you play at the top level uh people underestimate it underestimate this quality. But when you're 20, 25, or even later when you're manager the resistance to stress and keep keep uh fixed on what you think is important because when you're under pressure, you can lose common sense many times. And uh I was maybe not too bad at that, but first of all, I always I'm a little bit a dreamer. I always think the next game will be perfect, you know? So we are in a job where you wait always for the next game as a player as well. You want to do it again and this time better. And finally, you look back. 20 years have gone, but it passes like that. >> There are three more questions that I want to ask to see if you know your your stats well. No. >> Well, you know, it's just you know, three questions that I'm going to ask. Tell me the name of the player that you used the most throughout your obviously Arsenal career. >> One answer, boss. One answer. >> One answer. Kolo Touré. >> Shall I tell you who it was? >> Yes. >> Patrick Vieira. >> Patrick Vieira. It's funny because I had an hesitation between Patrick and Kolo and you. >> Oh, I wasn't far like that. >> And Kolo must not be far as well. >> Yeah, Kolo isn't far, but it's it's it's Patrick. The player that you subbed the most. >> Theo Walcott. >> Dennis Bergkamp. >> HA! >> [laughter] >> I KNEW I was >> I KNEW THAT REACTION. >> I knew >> Look, I'm ready to be crucified for that. >> Wow, I I I was surprised myself when I saw 140 times. 140 times >> But maybe it can be positive as well. It can be >> The game was won already. >> was won already. [laughter] >> And the last one, the the team that you scored that your team scored the most goals against >> Liverpool >> Tottenham >> I had to put that one in. Sorry. >> [laughter] >> Thank Thank you for that. >> Yeah, Tottenham. Tottenham. Boss Thanks a lot. >> Thank you. >> And well done again.
