captain Cristiano Ronaldo dramatically walked out on the team's training camp last night. His departure comes after head coach Jorge Jesus confirmed Ronaldo would not start their next match, which is against Denmark in the Nations League. Ronaldo was kept on the bench for Portugal's win against Norway on Sunday and was not part of Portugal's training session on Wednesday. Instead, he trained alone. Jorge Jesus attempted to play down reports of a rift between the pair in his news conference yesterday. Well, despite Jesus' comments, Ronaldo took to social media to say this. After the press conference of the national team and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team training camp. In time, I will tell all the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that motivated me to leave national team to which I always devoted myself. Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my teammates good luck without exception. Right, Leanne. On socials yesterday, you said he makes it hard for you to defend him at times. What do you make of this situation and do you think we've seen him play for Portugal for the last time? >> Yeah, I mean, I defend Cristiano like he's a family member, Tommy. You know how much I love him. I remember when I was on with you before about we were talking about is he going to get to 1,000 goals? Um it's disappointing to say the least because you know, he doesn't help himself at times because I think there's this majority of people think he's arrogant. They think he only thinks about himself and I always say him and Mo Salah remind me of they're very similar in how they operate, right? They're both elite footballers and really all they care about is number one and that's the reality. And I do think there has to be an element of arrogance with people that do get to the top. But him leaving the team based upon not coming on against Norway doesn't look good. Maybe he wouldn't have come out and spoke if Jorge Jesus didn't speak about it in the press conference. But when Cristiano Ronaldo leaves a camp, there will be a lot of talk about it. I mean, I was talking to you before like I think on flight tracker it was like the most number one flight that was tracked to Madrid. Do you know what I mean? Last night people were wondering where he's going and he is Cristiano Ronaldo and for Portugal he's like a king, isn't he? So it's disappointing to say the least and you know, it doesn't It's not a good look in reality. You've left your team, you know, at the end of the day he's 41 years old now. Um you know, I still love him, but I think, you know, the saying of what was it that Jamie Carragher said about Casemiro the other year, leave the game before it leaves you. >> Yeah, leave the >> Something along those lines. >> before the football leaves you, he said. >> And I think we're seeing that with Cristiano. He isn't the Cristiano of 10 years ago, but who would be? He's 41 years old. He still looks amazing, still in tip-top shape, but he's not got that acceleration that he used to have and Jorge Jesus was with him at Al Nassr. They won a championship together. So >> Well, that's that's the point. He they all they know each other cuz you're right, you pointed that out earlier that he was his club manager very recently. But in his statement he says, "Good luck to all the players without exception." He said he spoke to the president. Didn't mention the manager. Which does suggest that the issue is with Jorge Jesus rather than anybody else. >> And the thing is as well, I think you're treading a fine line because from what I've seen Jorge >> They won that game without him. [snorts] >> Right. And apparently they told him Jorge Jesus told Cristiano that he was coming on in that game. You're treading a fine line when you do that because I played for managers before that have told me that I'm coming on in the game you don't get on and you feel really angry, emotional and frustrated. But you have to let not let your emotions get the better of you. I mean, he is Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest ever footballers, but like I said, he doesn't do himself favors by doing this type of thing because it just feeds in to the stereotypes that people already think about him. And maybe he doesn't care. Maybe he doesn't care what people think of him. And I think he has earned the right, you know, to have that respect, but it's not a good look because it looks like he's not come on in one game and then he's just left the Portugal camp. But if I'm his teammate, you know, I'm not going to be happy about that, Tom. >> Well, he he says he will reveal all in time. >> It will appear with Morgan. >> [laughter] >> Yeah, well, he's probably going to sit down. >> It it could It could be Does this suggest that he doesn't have the power that he once had because there was a time where Cristiano Ronaldo went against the manager. He'd probably side with Ronaldo over the manager. >> Like in Qatar at the World Cup. People were talking about it 5 years ago, weren't they? >> Yeah, whereas here and it doesn't help Ronaldo that they won without him, like we've said. But at this age and at this stage of his career might the Portuguese be FA be more inclined to not side with him. Suggests that his power has waned. >> I mean, Jorge Jesus is the manager. He deems Ramos and Cancelo and those types of players Joao Felix, Neto to be better than Cristiano Ronaldo and he's the manager and he has the right to make those decisions. And I don't think Cristiano is doing anything of late to make me believe that he should be the first name down on the team sheet. And I I think it's one of those ones, Tom, as well, where it's probably so difficult for Cristiano Ronaldo to not be at the level he used to be at, you know? He knows he's probably not, and it's really hard for him to kind of come to terms with that. Do you know what I mean? He's not at the same level as he used to be, but he's 41 years old. Who is at that level when they're that age and being able to perform at those levels? So, he's not superhuman. He looks superhuman. Looks like a superhero, but at the same time, like, I do I I I I somewhat think he's kind of tarnishing his legacy as well because it's like he's been so incredible, done so amazing, and like people He's an idol, isn't he? But when he does this type of stuff, it's not a great example to set cuz when he said I'm going to reveal all in time, just do it now then so then, you know, you can put it to bed and they can move on because it becomes a topic of conversation, especially within camp. >> Maybe he's going to come on Sky Sports FC to reveal all, maybe. How sad would How sad would it be if he has played his last game for Portugal and this is the end? If you think about with, you know, Messi, he was allowed to have one game one final game as a send-off to a brilliant international career. Do you think Ronaldo maybe should have done the same? >> I mean, they probably will still still do that in time. I mean, when these types of things happen, emotions are running high. Um both sides, Jorge Jesus is probably thinking he didn't want this to happen. Cristiano Ronaldo is probably thinking I'm just going to get out of here. I do think they will be some type of I don't Do I think this is the last time we've seen him play for Portugal? Probably. But I do think they will do some type of send-off for him. That's whether he wants it or not. >> In in fairness, if if he was going to keep playing to the Euros, he'd be a a 43 or maybe just about to turn 43. Do you think that'd be too far for him anyway? >> Yeah, I mean, to be fair, like, Roberto Martinez, if he was still the coach, they probably would still be doing the same thing. He would still be putting one of the first names down on the team sheet, but at what point does it become detrimental to the team? I mean, this is unbelievable to be thinking of a 43 And if he was 41 and he and he's 43 and he's still performing to those levels, then pick him. Like we always say, age is only a number, but the reality is he isn't. Even when he came back to Manchester United a number of years ago, I was so excited when he came back, and then he left at half-time during one of the games there as well. And I felt like I was defending him again saying, you know, you don't know what's going on behind the scenes, emotions get the better of you, but it isn't a good look. And like I said, sometimes you have to play the game a little bit, and at least be there for this Nations League camp, and then maybe get through this, and then revisit it. Cuz he obviously feels disrespected that Jorge Jesus has told him he's coming on in the game and he hasn't, but it's the coach at the end of the day. Like they can make decisions, they're the coach, they're making the decisions in game that they think is the best for the team, and Jorge Jesus has done that. And he believes that Cristiano Ronaldo wasn't needed in that game.
