To mark World Heart Day, we've joined it with Huddersfield Town and the Sky Bet Building Foundation's Fund for the Heart of the Town initiative. It's a 12week program for local men. We're going to do quizzes. We've got a health test. We've even got a workout. So, follow me. Let's get right involved. >> Right. So, we're here with the Hearts of the Town Foundation. Matt and Fay are going to take me through specifically what they're going to be doing on this 12week program with the local fellas. Yes, correct. So, this is for your BMI. So, this will calculate your BMI. Then there'll be a few more health specific questions that you're going to run through on the iPad. And then we're going to do a PO dot test, which is going to measure your cholesterol levels, good and bad. It's going to give you a heart age in relation to your own age. >> And then a cardiovascular risk score. >> So, this is this is the easy bit and then we get into the more serious stuff. >> We'll just be as honest as you can with me. >> Yeah. >> Give it to me straight and we can crack on. Take the quiff into account. If it gets me over 6 foot, [laughter] I'll be more than happy. >> So, we have got 181 cm. >> And then you can step onto the scales whenever you're ready. >> Okay. >> 85.1 kg. >> You want to take a seat? >> Is it that bad news? >> Not that good. >> Oh, good. All good. >> Not nothing. Yeah. >> It's never normally a good thing, is it? Health professor says, "Can you take a seat?" The test is a little fingerprint test basically. So, and it's done like a COVID test, >> right? >> So, we take a little blood sample. You're all right with blood. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. All good. >> But if it is vain, that would be amazing. >> So, now we'll do a really speed up version with the clock going round. Ready? >> We've got total cholesterol top one. >> That's an awful color of of result test. [laughter] Are these these color to make you absolutely panic straight away? >> It might be red. Oh no. >> BMI. off. [laughter] >> I did finish playing about 12 13 years ago. >> Listen. So BMI is 25. >> Just say what it says. >> It says overweight. Overweight. It's overweight. >> Come all this way to be told I'm overweight. >> A lot of athletes would would sit in the overweight section is what I'm I'm trying to make it feel a bit bad. >> It's not working at all. >> So 25 and over. >> It's.9 over 25. >> It's 0.9 over. So yeah, you're not bad, >> but you are overweight. >> Seriously, >> but you are overweight. >> They're going to love discussing this. >> How old are you? >> I'm 45. >> Oh, there we go. He's pulled it back now. So your heart age is 43. >> So your heart age, so as it says there, you have the same risk of a heart attack or a stroke as a healthy 43 year old person. >> Okay. Okay. So if it was within 5 years over, yeah, >> we'd still say that's pretty good result type two. >> Let's talk about the cholesterol. What kind of dietary or physical things would you say give a go? >> So I think get moving more. Um, so I think walking is always a fantastic one to recommend. um it's accessible, it's easy. And then in terms of dietary, it's just about learning what you should and shouldn't really be putting in your body and quantities of what what you're eating. >> Your physical activity levels will be naturally quite high, aren't they? Like you said, >> so I think we would tailor that >> that 7 minute conversation that we had in between about how you're still you're still running, you're still going to the gym, you're still keeping fit since not playing football. I think probably the getting the cholesterol levels down by 0.9 or whatever it was would be probably dietary related. Um >> I am a big fan of red meat. I do drink full fat milk. >> Yeah, maybe a change in the >> going to semi-km milk or slightly less red meats and like it's all saturated fats related in terms of the dietary stuff. >> So how likely are you to recommend this if doing it 100% all the time? If you're going to do it again, then no. We're here in Huddersfield on World Heart Day with the Heart of the Town initiative. So Sam, just talk us through what that actual initiative is. >> Yeah, [snorts] so it's uh it's a 12week program that identifies uh adult males uh from the local area and might have some concerns about uh their physical fitness, their their heart health. uh and ultimately it's a opportunity for them to come learn a bit more about their health and the ways in which they can improve that and uh lower that heart age. >> So what type of work needs to go into this because obviously it's the sky building foundations fund which is a great help to actually get this idea off the paper and into somewhere like this. >> Yeah and well I think that's really important is it is just the start isn't it these community programs really important and the funding is is is exceptional. What that hopes to do is then provide a platform for us to do that more and more and more and have impact on more and more people further down the line. >> When a player does come in, it's such a wonderful magnetic moment, isn't it? Because it really does hit home just how important these players find the community as well. >> Yeah. I mean, firstly, I think it's it's a bit of gravitas for for people to come and see see a player, but also isn't it great that a player is engaged in its community? Um Lass who is attending today a real community hero uh really engages everything that we do uh really aligns with the club and foundation values and yeah football club is the heart of the community has a responsibility in my opinion um to have a positive impact um not many organizations within a town or a city have as much pull as as much impact as a football club can do. So it's our responsibility to do that I think. >> Cool. Should we give one of these a blast? Go for it. [laughter] >> Good evening. Thanks for coming down to obviously week two. The first half we're in here. This is where we're going to be for the next few weeks. Second half, we're down in the gym doing a bit of a circuit session. All right. So, it'll be a bit introductory when we go down there. Nothing to worry about. We'll make sure you can all get moving. Have a go. So, do we all lunges? >> Yeah. Turn the lunge. We want one foot down in front of the other. Nice and low. Can you try and get that back knee as close to the floor as you can? >> Try and keep your back straight. So, this is a bit of a balance exercise as well. So, if you struggle to get low, all right, just go as low as you can. If you're really struggling to lunge at all, this can just be a walking stage up and down. >> Perfect. Yep, you're right about this one. It really does hurt your knees, doesn't it? It just might be picking up my knees cracking. >> Keep going. Keep trying to move for the full minute if you can. >> That's got to be a minute now. 20. >> So lass, we're here at the heart of the town initiative and you've come here. It's an international break. Obviously people are here there and everywhere and you've got training to do but just why is it important for you to come to something like this? But I think it's it's important to to support what what we just been speaking about there is obviously when you get older it's really important well at any age uh to be physically active. >> Uh and I think it's brilliant to go out and see the the passion uh these people have for [laughter] have for um for obviously being physically active and and still doing whatever you can to to get out and do that half an hour workout the day or wherever it might be. >> Do people talk to you about that type of thing? Because obviously as a footballer you have to be physically fit. You've always been physically fit. It's part of your job. Is it a discussion that people actually start with you for advice? >> Not really. But it was actually quite interesting because for us when it's a job it's very easy like we gain told listen we an hour and a half training in gym. So it's so natural. But then when you speak to them there why is it hard? It's because of job >> time kids everything like that. So it's not just for me I'm thinking oh I've got plenty of time to do it but people is in a very different situation at times. So it's about the time and how to go and be physically active which was really interesting to hear about >> and that the sense of motivation as well which as you say being a footballer kind of is part of the job but you can understand how time constraints and physical capacity and injury as we all get older can affect someone's motivation. >> Exactly. So so that's what it is where um yeah how do you get that motivation? How do you get in the time and and everything like that when we're quite privileged that it's just a part of every day and and everything we do is is is around being physically act active but a lot of people sit in the desk all day and when they come home they want to relax because they're mentally tired or whatever. But how do you get that motivation to to then say no I'm going out and do a little bit or whatever it might be. And the huge part about this as well with Huddersfield Town is the Sky Building Foundation fund which enables things like this and initiatives like this to be able to take place with the funding and that sense of what the community is. Is that just as important part of being a footballer for you as what you do on a Saturday afternoon on the pitch? Yeah, it is because obviously we play Fersville. So, this is in Huddersville obviously and and the club where the club can help and open doors for for people is obviously really important that you go and show support and and knowing that what doors you sort of can unlock and and what you can help with really essentially. Yeah. >> So, this is in a gym which is not too far from the stadium itself. Just to round off, give us a little flavor of the season so far. You enjoying it? >> Yeah. No, I think we Yeah, I think we've done right. I think we've done well. Yeah. I think uh we didn't play the weekends. I think we dropped down to sixth or fifth or something like that, but been positive signs. So, uh, we know what it's like. It's a it's a marathon and not a sprint. So, we're still early on and, uh, but I'll be really positive. Fantastic. >> All right. So, what I want you to try and do, can you try and sit a little bit into a little bit of a squat like this? All right. And you're just going to go, you can either do two hands at a time or alternate like this. >> So, try and keep nice and still with your body. Just move your arms. Three, two, four. Let's go. >> Look at this drop. [laughter] >> What? [laughter] >> You're nailed it, John. Easy peasy. Okay, we're here with Mike and Simon who have been through the heart of a town program. Mike, talk us through how you found it. >> Um, I had minor health issues in the past and I was invited along because I'm a a seen ticket holder town. So, I thought, well, I'll take it up and have a go. >> It seems like a really good bunch of people that have put it together. Simon, is it because it can be quite daunting going to something like this, but I suppose it's the it's the vibe that they give off that allows you to come in and feel comfortable. >> Yeah, there's a lot of uh enthusiasm from Matt and the team, from the foundation. Uh the cohort that we um was was part of um was very friendly. There was probably a range of people from about late 20s up to sort of mid60s, but everyone got on and it was uh it was enjoyable every week to be honest. You know, you go on some of these things and sometimes it can become a chore after, >> you know, a couple of sessions, but it was, you know, the enthusiasm sort of kept going throughout the entire 12 weeks. >> Yeah. And do you think like having that hook of what it is with Huddersfield Town, you being a season ticket holder and it being run by the club itself, did that give you an extra motivation to come and do it because it was your club doing it? >> Definitely. Definitely gave extra motivation. Yes. And they are a really good community club anyway. So it was just Yeah. And to meet the same people every week and have some team games as well. It was Yeah. That's what pulled me in every week. >> And in in a situation such as this, I mean, is it did you come here off your own back? Were you told to come here? Who were you? Was it suggested to you? >> I had a heart attack at 47, >> one at 54. >> Um, took early retirement. So, >> you know, I thought it was time to uh take things a little bit more serious. So, >> given what you've been through, I suppose has that reaffirmed just how important initiative like this really is? >> Of course it is. Yeah. There was quite a range of activities um taster sessions. So, um it helped you find things that you enjoy doing. >> The better you feel about yourself physically, hopefully the better you feel mentally. >> Exactly. Yeah, we find through exercise that you you do feel fresher in your mind and can think clearer and you feel better in yourself. >> And fundamental changes that you've made off the back of this program. Have you as has your lifestyles changed? >> Uh well, I was already going through a lifestyle change because I was retiring. So, I'm now going to the gym twice a week, swimming twice a week, lots of walking. >> Yeah. because of the way that Huddersfield Town do it, does it make it feel like it's something you can kind of get over and and not necessarily defeat but work towards the little steps that you're talking about? >> Yeah, I mean the actual people who run it um you know are fantastic. You know, they keep you motivated through the 12 weeks and you know it was it was brilliant. We did different activities most weeks and lots of sort of talks about men's, you know, well-being, etc. So, so yeah, it was uh it was great. Yeah, >> Mike, I've got a gym session to do very shortly. You've done it. >> What do I need to prepare myself? What's going what's going to happen? >> Well, you you need to obviously have the right kit. Do do [laughter] a warm up. You got your kit on. Do a bit of a warm up. Make sure you don't stretch any, you know, pull [laughter] any muscles or anything. >> Off you go. Another minute. 5 4 3 2 1 >> I did actually enjoy some of that. >> Some of it. >> Yeah. Lots of lifestyle changes are needed. [laughter] >> But it helps when you've got someone egging you [music] on. Yeah. >> Didn't mind that at all. John was your hype man. >> He was my hype man and you were the overall hype man. The loudest hype man I've ever heard which is great. >> Apologies. >> But no, what a good bunch though. What a lovely bunch of fellas. >> Yeah, really good. I'm sure if they if they all put that in after then they'll be uh we'll make a positive difference after 12 weeks. >> Yes. And that's the aim, isn't it? Look at it now. See what happens in 3 months time. See what the advantages are. See how far people have come and never go on the ski egg again. >> Yeah, exactly. You don't want one of those in your garden, do you? >> No, I'd say thanks, but thanks. >> [laughter]
