117 million is a huge investment in Morgan Rogers, but does he have the data to back it up? We're joined by Opta data editor Gary Mabbutt to discuss the transfer in more detail. Gary, thank you for joining us again. How are you? >> All good, mate. How you doing? >> Yeah, I'm good, thank you. I'm excited cuz I'm someone that's a big fan of Morgan Rogers. We know what he can do. He's proven himself, but how does he fit under Xabi Alonso at Chelsea? >> Yeah, I mean, huge signing. Um he's If you look at his position by minutes or or his touch zone maps uh for Villa over the last two seasons, he splits his time basically being on the left or being in the middle. He's not an out and out winger. He doesn't enjoy staying out wide. Um and obviously he's played 10 behind Watkins as well. So, if we assume that Alonso's going to play his 3-4-3 system that which he enjoyed at Leverkusen, then you'd think that Rogers would slot in as one of those left the left-sided 10 or one of the two 10s behind the striker. Um of course, he can play in a 4-2-3-1 and he can then play left or or 10 as well. But, um yeah, you'd think that that 3-4-3 would be quite good for him because he likes to drift and not be you know uh an out and out wide player that stays outside. >> There's been a lot of talk about Rogers and Palmer playing together. Can they fit in the same team? >> Yeah, I mean, the wing is things funny because seems like especially again going back to this formation, um we don't know exactly. Alonso might play a back four and he might use a traditional sort of 4-2-3-1 which will then use the wide players, but if he doesn't and he goes with wing backs, then yeah, um it could be a case that, you know, Palmer likes to drift in on the right. They're best powers, right? They they they could end up playing together behind the 10 um uh behind the striker, sorry, in the two 10s. And um yeah, it really uh it'd be interesting to see what what he does formation-wise and whether we sell a winger because we don't need as many wide ones now. Um if he goes and gets a wing back, for example. >> What are the main differences between the two? How does Rogers improve that Chelsea attack? >> It's going to be fantastic to see. They they they'll have great balance. Obviously, Rogers is a little bit more physical player. Um he's great at winning the ball back. I mean, some of his metrics from last season, some of his rankings among forwards in the Premier League are, you know, he's in the top three or four for for so many. He had the most progressive passes, most passes ended in the final third, most line-breaking passes leading to goals. He carries the ball really well. He's in in the in the top two or three for shot-ending carries, goals outside the box. So, he's going to link up with Palmer so well in in in that way. Like I said, going back to the physical thing, he he also wins the ball back loads. You know, he's top two for possession won in the final third as well. So, that that would also help Palmer to get free up Palmer with some small spaces as well with with Rodgers' work rate and and physicality. So, yeah, it's it's it's pretty exciting, um, for sure. >> Obviously, it's a huge amount of money. What does a good return on investment look like over the next few seasons? >> The money thing is is interesting. I think some of these, um, some some others one's one transfer sparks a bunch of others and it kind of they all feed off each other with with the fee. Um, you know, the Tonali and Andersons fees this summer already have meant that Rodgers kind of has to be in that bracket. Rodgers' numbers are great. You know, goals and assists, 25 last season, 27 the season before. He's actually scored 28 goals for Villa over the last two seasons, which with none of them being penalties. And that's actually the most among all Premier League players to for goals scored without any penalties, um, in that in that period. Like, in terms of then what he goes on to do now with Chelsea with with Alonso, with the the sort of presence and the mentality that that brings, um, they're going to be hungry for titles, hungry for for winning. He's already, um, he's already been quoted as saying he signed for the biggest club in London, which is obviously a massive deal given that Arsenal just won the league. Um, no Europe this season, so they the the they're going to be, um, focusing on that league, uh, obviously a lot with with just one game a week. Um, anything can happen. And it's they're really exciting times. Um, be interested to see what happens.
