[Music] foreign [Music] hello and welcome to 442's World Cup in motion throughout the world cup myself and the rest of the team will be going live pretty much every day to talk through all the action the goals the drama and all the biggest talking points from Qatar we're now on day three of the tournament and it really feels like things are sparking into life we've seen both home nations in action some of the other big guns as well and probably just now the biggest shock we'll see of the entire group stage joining me to make sense of it all is James our editor catch our Deputy editor and Mark my fellow staff writer right then Lads I think uh it would make the most sense to start with our fellow sorry our residents Saudi Arabia fan uh catch what did he make of that then why am I the resident Saudi Arabia fan what do you think it's actually guys yeah it was uh yeah it was I mean I can't believe what I've Just Seen um Saudi Arabia around 53rd in the world Argentina unbeaten 36 games Brazil were the last team to beat them and no one predicted that like as soon as I sat down um I'm in the office today sat down next to Ryan dabs or staff right and I just went I sat I entered the room a bit late because um I've been working really hard James you'll be here proudly to here and as Messi was running up to take apparently on 10 minutes I stepped into the room and I I just turned around and said this could be you know this could be a real embarrassing one and uh it wasn't well they were good well yeah it was you're right actually was comparison not facility but they were they were good for it they were so organized and I think I think they've hit upon the the future of football which is with this strict offside technology we've got you can you can play really really sticky offside traps and it could work and they were so high messy you know it's it's it worked I think this is the future of football high high lines and and use use the technology to your advantage they played they played it uh absolute affection though and when you look at the fact that you go and how Di Maria who's playing his last tournament now Messi who's 35 and obviously lost a little bit of that spark is pretty rapid but two out three of those forwards uh you've got a good chance of catching them catching them if they're if they're on the break because they're not not the quickest anymore so I think we've just witnessed the Saudi Arabian Manuel Neuer how good was it coming off his line and sweeping up that's fantastic yeah yeah yeah yes and we've got we've got a big feature uh in the current issue of 442 magazine which you guys should go out and buy um called The Last Dance which is about it being both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's final tournaments mark my dazzling assistant is showing you guys it's the stars of the World Cup issue um and as I say it's a last dance uh can Lionel Messi uh and Cristiano Ronaldo make this tournament count and finally get their hands on the Ultimate Prize in football that's what one of our big features is about uh so James uh I guess uh you're the man who oversees things here is the music about to stop for Lionel Messi uh well let's not forget that in 2010 Spain lost their opening game of the World Cup and went on to win the trophy so no it's not over um but it's a difficult group they've got um Netherlands and Mexico is that right let's come Poland uh Mexico and Poland sorry Lewandowski which is going to be tricky I think for so then um so it's definitely not over they can get out of the group but it's not going to be easy um do I think they went I thought I thought they were they were my I I always thought Brazil would favorites going into the tournament I thought France were up there up until the um injury to Benzema I mean they're still a very good team but I think they might just have one injury too many and Argentina were right up there as well but on on today's showing um maybe not not quite as uh favorites as they once were um can I just point out a problem as well we might have that um if Argentina finished second in their group in England win their group that shunt them onto England side of the draw so just point I'm not sure I mean listen we're one game in for both England and Argentina but on the showings of both I wouldn't be too concerned at the moment um on the plus side we won't have to play Saudi Arabia yeah defensively for England there are still a few I'm sure we're coming to England in a bit but I think defensively there are a few question marks still based on yesterday's performance but um I didn't see too much today that would worry me if I was if I was an England fan I think England showed attacking wise yesterday they can get it teams and I think that um you know if they did end up playing Argentina I don't think there's too much to worry about uh now you uh sent a tweet I think yesterday uh James May it may have also just been in our uh work chat about the Harry MaGuire penalty shout from yesterday now we will get into England in a minute but the reason I bring it up is because we've just seen a quite hilarious scene between uh great souness and Roy Keane arguing about penalties um the one that Lionel Messi scored for Argentina in that game it was from a similar sort of foul although it wasn't a foul in the England match a Defender with his arms all around the striker sort of dragging into the ground from corner and I know you think Harry MaGuire should have been given one uh yesterday so my question really is um is there massive inconsistencies in the refereeing at this tournament and do you think that was a penalty in the Argentina game just now uh yes I think it was apparently in the Argentina game um and yes I think it was a penalty for on Harry MaGuire yesterday as well um yeah I mean neither Defender had eyes on the ball both Defenders had their arms wrapped around the opposition player uh yeah I thought they were both penalties um it does seem uh an odd time for officials to be sort of you know at a World Cup to be trying out you know new rules or initiatives on um sort of grappling in the Box maybe you know could have tried that last year um you know before the tournament started but I think his football fans all you want is consistency and with VAR that's what we hoped we'd get I don't even know and I don't know for sure but what's the Harry MaGuire one even checked I'm not sure um it didn't seem like it um the the penalty that was given against England yesterday on John Stones for shirt pulling it it it looked harsh but he was pulling a shirt so you know I can see why that was given but I definitely felt hiring wise was a penalty as well and especially when you see today's I think it is it is frustrating when you just see the inconsistency and you've mentioned just now James uh referees trying out new things at this tournament and it isn't only uh isolated to the realm of penalties from corners and things like that because there's also been a couple of other funny things one is uh social media wanted to meltdown a bit noticing that the referees now have their names across the back of their shirts a little bit like players I don't know if uh young fans are going to start wearing those in school playgrounds or something but it's a bit weird and all season 10 yeah and also the fact that 59 minutes were added on uh as injury time to either half across the three games yesterday there was I think it was 24 minutes or something mad in the England game Mark what the hell is going on um well growing up in a household in which my dad is a rugby fan and doesn't particularly like the football I've had to endure a lot of over the years hearing do you think they should have a sin bin in football or um do you think there's enough respect for the referee in football and all these laws that they have in rugby that you I get thrown at me and he's always said they should stop the clock in football they should stop the clock and add on proper time and I think we've seen why that is Daft basically because there's something sacred about the 90 minutes plus four or five minutes of added time okay let's go back to like six or seven sometimes with you know incidents that happen but 14 minutes it was for for England yesterday and I know it was unfortunate that happened what happened to the irony goalkeeper but it's it's far too much out of time for me I that's that's my my opinion um I think when when you've got a 90 minutes you know you stand you know when you're leaving the pub that's that's fine but I'm I'm not I'm not here for this added time for two journalists saying there should be less football there you go I I go to football regularly and have done for the last 25 years or so and it used to be generally three minutes at the end of the game would be held up um and then you know a few years ago they brought in the rules where you know it was 30 seconds added for a goal it was 30 seconds per substitute and then instead of five minutes when it would be held up I'm talking about in domestic football here yeah and you'd hear fans around you go five minutes where's that come from and you just you'd stand there and go well there have been three substitutions for that team three for that team they've been four goals or whatever and you can quickly work out that that's where five minutes has come from um I think it is an interesting one with the added time because I think managers are gonna have to sort of think about this especially in the heat especially for the earlier games you're not playing 90 minute games anymore you are playing 105 minute games here and you you might you might delay you know if you're thinking I'm going to throw someone on for the last half an hour instead of throwing them on on 60 Minutes you might throw them on on 70 minutes I was listening to a popular radio show this morning with Ali mccoist and uh he was he had an idea if a player takes over 20 30 seconds to take the throw in the other team gets to throw in it's like you know in basketball and NFL they have a shot clock that makes that might speed up uh goal kicks and Thrones you know if they keep it experience they're very rarely enforced a six second rule with goalkeepers oh it's gone hasn't it it went it went ages ago yeah but there's little things going I wouldn't be surprised if they just did or they just added a sin bin into into Denmark's Tunisia well anyone having known about it now half hour beforehand I mean you you mentioned yesterday that it was what 50 odd minutes added to yesterday's three games I mean I noted down while watching the last game between Argentina and Saudi Arabia that when the board went up which was for nine minutes I believe um now obviously it was longer than that because there was a quite a serious injury to one of the Saudi Arabia Defenders um but before that that would have taken it to 78 minutes for the tournament in terms of official added on time so by the end of today we should actually have seen an extra game of football in terms of minutes played well that's what Infantino wants more games he's getting value for money here but it's going to be ridiculous isn't it uh now before we move on to some of the other games we've had one of the comments here from Eunice who uh once our thought on however Renard the Saudi Arabia coach um who um we actually had a big interview with in our previous edition of 442 magazine which is the sort of World Cup preview um Edition um now he's had a storied career he's currently at Saudi Arabia today was possibly uh his greatest uh greatest ever result with the national team given the given the magnitude and the size of the opposition but he's but he's managed teams including Zambia Angola Ivory Coast Lil he's been all around the world uh how impressive uh was today's result do you think in in such a a long and storied career as I've said catch yeah amazing he's he's won two African nations in his career with Zambia and Ivory Coast and he he said he he had similar Ambitions to win things with Saudi Arabia in our interview I'm going to post a link actually in the comments to the um an online um clip from the um interview that we ran in our previous issue um in which he says he didn't take the national team uh role for money even though the money's very good which I'm sure it is in Saudi Arabia might be going up after today um but like he's just a he's a staple isn't he a tournament staple death taxes and hervey Reynolds white shirt he just looks class on the sideline and you know what he's put together a really organized team there they were technically pretty good tactically very very disciplined there was the buck six by the end of it but they had Argentina pinned back in that second half Messi was coming it was on half to try and get the ball um the goalkeeper played well they were celebrating tackles like goals there's a great team spirit there they've scored two great goals so you he's really pulled something special together there considering they lost the opening game of of Russia 2018 heavily to Russia they've had a great four years so a fair play time I didn't think Saudi Arabia would do anything and they've pulled out one of the biggest upsets in um in World Cup history today and uh yeah I mean do do hunt we'll be posting some more quotes from that interview we had it was an exclusive with them her writer called Mark Lomas who wrote that for us and uh there's some great stories he used to manage Cambridge United back in back in you know 2004 he got the sack got the sack yeah they were bottom of um the fourth tier of English football um he's some great great stories in there about Alex Ferguson ringing ringing him up to try and get to by John Ruddy the goalkeeper off him so what an amazing career and and that's right up there with these big achievements he's like I said he's won two African nations but he did something very special today with Saudi Arabia now talking about big upsets doing something very very special I think uh we'd better discuss um one of the biggest shocks yesterday which was little old England overcoming uh the mighty Iran um nobody saw that coming six two minutes from England um I think we better just have a chat about that because we weren't on yesterday and we wanted to have a bit of a summary about that game um South Gates sprung a bit of a surprise a 4-3-3 formation Mark what did you make of the formation what did you make of uh Southgate sort of letting letting the leash off a little bit were you impressed with England yesterday I was very impressed yeah I mean there was a rumored lineup going around yesterday morning um that he was going to be starting with Bellingham and mounts uh as the number eights outside of rice and I think we all saw it and went well that'd be nice wouldn't it but it's gonna be five at the back and it was just yeah it was it was fantastic to see England actually attacking and you know showing some intent trying to dominate possession in the opponent's final third um I thought the way that Declan rice dropped into the back line to receive the ball and just dictate play was was brilliant I think it it really suits Harry MaGuire as well um this this kind of style of play rather than soaking up pressure and hoping that Maguire and stones will bail us out I think that was it was just good to see and Saka and Bellingham particularly on on the right hand side we were saying this today they could be coming into their Peak you know not even the next World Cup the World Cup after that's that's how how good these two players are uh they were absolutely brilliant weren't they and Bellingham yeah I know before the tournament um a lot of people worried about um the absence or the potential absence of Calvin Phillips from England's Midfield he had such brilliant euros and he he formed the winning partnership with Declan rights catch Bellingham still just a teenager big boots to feel given given how well uh Calvin Phillips played in that Euros just just how good is is Duke Billingham what does he bring to the England side and could this be an actually breakout tournament for him uh he's he's playing his way under the front cover of 442 magazine next year I think he's he's absolutely I think you said didn't you earlier that you interviewed him last year and um he wasn't sort of you know the journeys come on in those 12 months is is is ridiculous he he reminds me of like um a couple of friends have got like golden retrievers and you go around the house and it's all over you like that must be what it's like playing against Bellingham he's just all over here like round your legs right in the front of you behind you and he covers the ground amazingly the engine on him he's just so sort of dynamic and agile he's got long legs and he must be really awkward to play against and and he's just so effective and confident but but yeah he spoke to him last year and and he wasn't uh he was very much uh wet behind the ears wasn't he well yeah he he hadn't even he hadn't even played for England uh yet he's been in one of the camps um and it was about six or seven months before uh Euro 2020 but obviously at the start of 2021 given that it was moved um and he was saying how great it would be to to one day you pull on that England shirt and um he really hoped that he'd get he not only went to that Euros he played a decent part he he's just gone from strength to strength and now I think even if if Calvin Phillips could suddenly click his fingers and be 100 fit for the next game I don't think he'd get in ahead of him because that was a towering header wasn't it absolutely fantastic um and we better talk about one of the other players that Mark mentioned just now James A lot of people think the Kayo sack are absolutely stole the show um but we also had uh Marcus rashford come on and score a goal Jack grealish come on and score a show come on and and score as well how good was that strength in depth and how much did sakum impress you yeah I think the strength of depth is uh is very impressive and you know you you're bringing on players and in no way you're weakening the team in any way um and I think you know we'll we'll find out more in the coming days but I think that the squad depth will really um prove very important for all teams in this tournament and those teams with that depth um will be the ones who go the furthest um soccer was very impressive and you know just mentally as well I've got no idea how tough it was it was for him 18 months ago after he missed that penalty same for rashford um I imagine it was horrific um and there may well have been a part I mean they may not have been but they may well have been a part of him that thought you know what I might just you know I get supported at Arsenal you know if I'm gonna get abused when I play for England I must stress you know it was I think the people have been convicted were it was he was abused online not not by fans in the crowd but just to show that you know to come out and show the sort of performance that he did I thought he was excellent he took his goals brilliantly both of them two very different goals took them both um very very well and his interview afterwards seem to show that you know he's it's just a very mature young man who um you know much like Bellingham you know it's a very it's very exciting for now but it's also very exciting for the future I think for England rashford as well you know he went off the board a little bit uh maybe last season people were talking about maybe he should leave Manchester United in order to you know fill his potential but he shown at the beginning of this season so far for United that he's been he's been very good he's rediscovered his goal scoring touch and I thought he took his goal very well because I want a slick finish on it that was a very nice I mean I don't watch United too much sadly I did watch him in the last game they playe
