[Applause] [Music] now [Music] hello and welcome to the first ever live streamed edition of big weekend here on the football 365 show brought to you by paddy power i'm your host mark smith um i mean how do i start this show there is so much to talk about from this week of football um obviously it's a sort of incredibly quick moving story so uh it's why it's good it's live i suppose if we recorded this on monday and it came out on tuesday we'd look like uh well we'd look like amateurs quite frankly lots to talk about to talk about the esl talk about jose talk about the games coming up this weekend and tonight there's a game tonight let's not forget um it'll be me it will be sarah winterburn editor of football365.com let's get into it this is big weekend brought to you by paddy power [Music] sarah winterburn's there i'm here and we are there together hi mark this is very exciting isn't it this is this is 21st century stuff it really is yeah i mean a little insight into how we're doing it before we have to film it on our phones send the files none of that nonsense we're right into it now sarah we're into the future and um you know what's not into the future the esl the esl is pretty much dead we think um there we go nice picture there it's sort of fitting really that spurs and arsenal sort of trying to remain relevant by staying but not quite no um i mean where do we start with this so much has been said this week sarah but i've not spoken to you about this what's your take on it in broad as broader stroke as you can what's your take on it my take is i mean what i couldn't quite believe is just how extraordinarily ludicrously bad this plan was you know they didn't pr it they didn't they weren't prepared for it they just announced this crazy thing that and almost like they didn't realize everyone was going to go absolutely batshit mental about it it's like but and then the only person who spoke out loud was florentino perez who is let's face it i mean some of the stuff he's been saying this week and if that's your spokesperson if that's the person you've chosen to send your message out oh my word i mean i think we all sort of cite and thought i don't think it will happen in the form it it was first presented in we thought there was good i thought there's gonna be a massive game of chicken where the uefa premier league etc were going to go flying down this road towards a super league and eventually someone was going to have to give they were going to have to compromise and we'd end up with a watered down version or whatever no one foresaw that 48 hours later it would be dead in the water it was absolutely extraordinary we'll be talking about this in years to come as do you remember those 48 hours when there was a super league and then there wasn't a super league well will we though because i mean hearing florentino perez talk today i mean i know that he probably is delusional in fact i'm convinced he is and i know that he's also probably a bit of a maniac um and i also know that he's so myopic when it comes to his view because it's all seen through a real madrid prism and he needs to protect real madrid at all costs but he still seems to think sarah winterburn but this is going to go ahead and all these 12 teams are on standby and that you know maybe a year two years three years down the line we're going to see it all again i think he's delusional if he thinks it's going to it's going to appear in this in this guys yes it will come up again because it always has come up again this is the first time they've gone really close to the precipice isn't it it's the first time they've actually said we are going to do this they've talked about it and talked about it and moved around it this will come back it's not going to go away but it's going to have to be done so differently next time and they really do need to take heed of what the issues were here and the issues were closed shop you can't have a close shop league people won't put up with it the you know the issue of promote no promotion no relegation all that stuff that can't be part of the plan it has to be something different i think in essence people aren't that aren't that scared about the idea of you know the best teams playing the best team we have that in the champions league anyway and the new champions league format is still going to give some sort of protection to those teams who fall through the net you know those are those teams who accidentally don't qualify so we may still get a juventus or liverpool in even if they don't qualify but i don't think we're going to see it in the guys that they've tried to try to sell it and you know perez was absolutely mental talking today some of the things he was saying was we're actually you know this idea that it was so unfair that the richest clubs lost the money and you kind of go in whose fault could that possibly be that real madrid despite having you know a greater income than almost every club in the world loses money who mr florentino perez possibly i don't understand the the logic of these 12 teams okay let's say 11 teams plus real madrid but these 12 teams who are signing up to something that they know would be received terribly by their core fan base i'm not sure they did know i think i think that's the problem here i think this was such a small um you know they're trying to keep this so secret that you only if if only sort of 15 20 people know about it you're basically an echo chamber aren't you if you're saying to each other oh you know your plan can you see any problems with your plan well no my plan's great everyone's gonna love mine but the plan this plan is is back of the napkin sort of stuff as well it absolutely is not even back of a napkin it's it's it's a classic cigarette packet plan isn't it wouldn't it be brilliant if we played each other all the time and then we wouldn't have to share the money and it's almost like the the the idea stopped there and they didn't actually think through you know in reality you should be sitting there saying right what are people's objections going to be what you know how do we counter them there was none of that the fact that they came out and announced this and they didn't have a single member of the media on side i mean sim you know you should have had a you know list of exclusive interviews lined up to get the message out there and to get sympathetic journalists there was not one single one and everyone talks about the fam power this week but we also saw the power of the media as well because the media moved as one you know this never happens you know there was no dissenting voices everybody said this is a absolutely god-awful idea and you know the strength of the punditry you know gary neville jamie carragher did it a massive service at the weekend particularly neville you know just to keep talking and keep being angry and and it seems like the you know the leaders of these clubs didn't expect that at all and the fact they didn't expect it really makes you worried about you know how much they actually know about this game and about this this game particularly in england where this was always going to be anathema to how we see football yeah there's there's several problems with the logic of it as well because from the the few voices that were pro esl i'm talking football fans global football fans who who wanted this a lot of the stuff i kept seeing was people saying well we don't want to see um you know chelsea versus burnley or chelsea versus west brom they're not exciting the problem is that once you get this super league the super league still has a burnley or a west brom equivalent happens to be spurs or arsenal but it has an equivalent and at some point they won't want to see those games either so in the end you've got four teams playing each other 100 times a season that's not football yeah like you said there's always someone in the class this strikes me as you know the the kid who who who has all those extra lessons in order to you know pass the 11 plus and ends up being the the most stupid person in the grammar school nobody wants to be that you know you can say it's the elite but if you go into the elite and you're the worst of the elite how does that feel you know that that's got to be worse than you know a big you know someone's going to finish bottom of that of that of that elite league and it's probably going to be tottenham where it's going to be ac milan or it's going to be arsenal you know those teams who whose whose form didn't match that standing anyway and they'd seen it imagine signing it for 23 years which is what there was they were signing for 23 years on this yeah i didn't know that the contract was 23 years so as tottenham you go into that thinking you could have 23 years of finishing bottom and this idea that you're going to get all this money well it's all very well but everybody else has got all that money as well and they're already better than you so yeah and how do you attract those players you know who wants to join a super league side that's finishing 23rd every year you know you can just imagine that that that sort of gap getting bigger and bigger almost you know yeah and then the idea of those the idea of those people those teams sorry coming back to the domestic leagues as that's what they wanted originally to stay in the domestic league and do super league to come back with an extra 300 million quid in the bank every year therefore making sure that top six never gets never gets disrupted it's completely anti-football completely anti-competition and i've got to say when it was when the news was breaking that there was uh you know teams dropping out it felt like how i feel after england win a knockout game in the world cup i was absolutely absolutely buzzing i couldn't believe it right joe hewlett has been uh been in touch she says the worry is will big offers from amazon and the zone in a couple of years forced an eventual breakaway league in a different format to the esl well it's a good question joe um i wonder sarah what can be done what should happen next to make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen there's been a few murmurings this evening that there's going to be rules put in place with the premier league to make sure any teams that try and break away like this to create a new league will be immediately and permanently banned from the league now that's got to be something that would put owners off i would imagine especially when you look at it as an investment absolutely i think so i think we i think you know there's been a lot of talk about punishment but if you're talking about punishment we've you know i think everyone's decided you can't really take points away that doesn't seem right because you're punishing managers and players who've got nothing to do with it no no no no no it's nonsense nonsense i know we talk about administration deductive points that's not the fans fault either all the players no i don't necessarily agree with that but i think i think that's what's going to happen they're not going to start they're not going to start deducting points i don't think i think that's off the table and and i think the premier league really don't want they don't want to cut you know cut their nose off despite their face so they they know where the money comes from for the premier league but that idea let me ask you what will happen but what do you think if you're in charge what do you think should happen i think that's a great idea i think the idea of putting something in place that says right if you even talk about this again you even talk about this again this is what we're gonna do and you know the premier league are in a good position at the moment they look like the good guys um you know like you wait for it like the good guys i mean that's what what an absolutely crazy week it is yeah you know you wait for the white knights of football jesus but um i think this idea that you know as soon as you start talking about it you know if this comes up again then they should be going to the premier league themselves and saying look this you know where you know that we've been approached to do this what should we do what's the you know is there a compromise can we do this and this it's the underhandedness of it isn't it it's the fact that everything was happening behind closed doors and you know to listen to um catherine saying who obviously came across very very well this week you know that anger the anger of monday turned into the sort of conciliatory nature of tuesday as he as he knew that people were starting to crumble he started being very conciliatory the idea of punishment wasn't there anymore it was all about oh come back to the family come back to the family he played it brilliantly and by the way he was talking about aganelli you know he's the godfather of agnelli's child and i've nearly lied to his face over and over again you know and this is what's happened and you know you go to clubs up and down they couldn't our country and also across europe the managers didn't know never mind and you're talking about liverpool you're talking about michael edwards apparently didn't know and these are people who are right at the top of those trees and they you know there must be in everything but then they're wheeling out klopp to take on the media like as an instant reaction just you know hanging him out to dry there it's completely unfair i thought klopp did a great job as well actually i think there's been several names in our in our league um and in in our country in terms of broadcasters and pundits who've really done a fantastic job and and should be praised for this um i mean i don't know where to where to go next really honest because it i've got a real issue with this and it's part of the logic that they had and part of the logic that florentino perez still talks about now they keep saying him and agnelli say young people aren't into football they ain't got the concentration for it they don't want to watch 90 minute games they want to play fifa they want to do this this so we need to change our game to appease them if your business plan is to gamble the entire sport the entire future of your sport on people that don't like football that just i don't understand this this is something that hasn't really been talked about that much it's absolutely it's absolute madness it's how especially if you've got a 74 year old man like florentino perez saying you know this is not what kids want so we need to work out what kids want you know right now those kids aren't interested or if you know part of the reason they aren't interested it's nothing to do with the length of the game you know these are kids who watch box sets on netflix for hours upon hours on end you know they might not watch football like like you and i watch it they might not sit there and watch 90 minutes they might have two more screens on the go but you know the reason why they're not into football is it's not accessible because it's expensive it's very expensive to go to games you know the price of tickets are prohibitive it's very expensive to watch it legally in in a broadcast sense you know if you need to have sky amazon um bt and everything it costs a fortune and if you happen to live in a house that doesn't isn't into football how would you get into football are you going to get yeah absolutely right but this is this this ridiculous idea that that middle-aged or older men talk about young people as if they're a different species and we have to go go for those young people there are enough people in this world who like football as it is that's why you're all multi-millionaires exactly and if we made it more accessible and cheaper for younger people we might get some of those as well you know football's not about to down it's ours if we don't but if we don't make it half an hour long when i was a kid and i'm talking you know seven years old up to say 12. i probably didn't watch many full 90 minute games because it's not just kids nowadays concentrations kids don't have concentration spans the difference is now that the culture of football is so welcoming to people so you might not be into watching five 90-minute games a week but you might be into the culture the fashion of it you know you might be into fifa you might be into highlights reels on youtube skills videos the point is you get them involved in that sort of thing they might watch the odd game in its entirety but as they get older as they start to appreciate the game a bit more get a bit more of a longer concentration then you've got them for life then they're into it then they love the game and they understand the nuances and they understand why it takes 90 minutes this idea of having a you know at the final 30 minutes be as a separate subscription model or having shorter games i mean it's just it's absolutely i do not understand it at all and we've got another message here sir a fresh fielder comes in he says where's the outrage at the free champions league places for 2024 onwards well here's the thing there would be outrage about this were it not for the last sort of 72 hours of football that's that seems to have blanketed everything i am not happy at all these three championship places i'm not happy with these at all but we've shown i say we the country has shown that if they mobilize and if they're you know vocal they can get this changed as well what do you make of it unfortunately what's happened this week like we were saying about playing absolutely into the hands of uefa is that looks like the least worst option doesn't it suddenly the the new champions league plans actually look okay because you're only talking about two two teams who didn't qualify properly so to speak being protected and put in there now is the question is whether that actually can be fought because it's an odd one isn't it it's not the kind of thing that people are going to take to the streets for you know it isn't as extreme as this you know the super league idea was so extreme that it mobilized everybody and it came at a time it came at exactly the right time you know everyone was ready to do this everyone was ready for the lack of anything else everybody just wanted to see other people you know like i would go to a protest against anything at the moment just just have a bit of company to be honest but you know but this i'm not sure the uefa plans are radical enough to get people mobilized and whether that can be changed in that way that's the worrying thing i don't like that ua for idea i certainly don't i don't like the more games i don't like the more teams you know we we sit through enough champions league games that don't mean anything and there's going to be more and more of them you know the only people who are happy about that i was going to say the other people out there about the clubs but we found out this week the clubs weren't happy themselves they weren't more they looked at those plans and went they don't go far enough i'm afraid we're probably stuck with it because it's it's less worse than what's happened you know this this couldn't have worked out any better than for ua for this week because it makes them look like the good guys and it makes this plan their plan look like the sensible plan you know yeah yeah i just i do just hope that something happens with this because i mean we've sort of briefly touched on what would happen next so personally it looks like they're going after the directors of the um of the clubs they're going to go for some sort of punishment that affects them more personally than just something that would affect points deductions or whatever the problem is i don't you can take them off the board or do whatever you want but they're still billionaires it doesn't really you know they can get in somewhere else in football in the world um personally what i would do sarah and this
