Welcome back to the Football Italia channel. I'm Lorenzo Bettoni and we finally have something positive to talk about because the Azuri beat Turkey 41 away yesterday. Let's break it all down. Let's see what happens. Let's see the key to talking points from that big win on Roberto Manini's second game. [music] Joining me today is Richard Hall. Richard, lucky boy. We got something positive to talk about as I said. >> Yeah, just a little bit. Um hopefully I'm good luck aiming for Italy then if I've come on for this one. Um no, it was fantastic, wasn't it? I mean, first and foremost, I think one of the things I want to say about Italy is that the atmosphere, you know, you go and play in Turkey, that is not easy in itself. And I think going there probably low in confidence, having the whistles of the Olympico still ringing in their ears to going into the whistles in Turkey plus everything else. That wasn't an easy task in itself, but I mean look what a result and um yeah, it's uh the papers certainly this morning as well were happy with the uh certainly much more positive mood. Um so yeah, it's it's all good for Manini today. >> Yeah, 100%. the the papers are positive, the fans are positive. Uh but I think the the first the very first thing the first talking point uh we got to discuss here it's uh the attitude because I think a lot of people were upset by the attitude in the Belgian game because the fear was we thought this was going to be a revolution. We see just one button Alexander Romano and what we see on the pitch is more of the same from the past. yesterday. It was something new. It was something fresh. Uh the let's say man that goes uh in the front pages today is Michael Kyote inevitably not just because he was one of the debutants yesterday along with Mateu Jerry but also because he scored one goal he contributed to another one. He he really was. There's still a debate on whether he was the man of the match or not, but he was up there with the best. Absolutely. And he is the man today. You you get Italian newspapers and look at the front pages. Gazeta deosport even has in its front page writing Kyod was the man of the match. And it's deserved I think. Um, and it mirrors a little bit what we've been saying, Richard, for the whole summer. >> Uh, we've got the talents there. We got the players, the young players who are emerging, who are playing modern football, who are playing in the top leagues. >> We just need to give them a chance. And this is again what hurt most of the fans and most of the media after the Belgium game. We didn't see that type of response from Manchini. We did see that in Turkey last night and the response from those involved was fantastic. >> Yeah. And I think that, you know, we talk about whether it's revolution, rebirth, regeneration, whatever word you want to use. Sometimes, you know, those old wounds, the old scars don't just go away. Um, you know, and so I think that in football especially, we expect teams to suddenly, you know, be a new coach comes in and everything works straight away. Um, you know, Manchini has got that experience. You know, he obviously won the Euros. He knows what he's doing. Um, and he's got the character for it. But I think that the players themselves would, you know, as well, the Italian media is so full on this. Italian public this idea. Manini probably didn't do himself any favors saying he wanted to ingratiate himself with the fans again, even though it's the right thing to say to create that harmony between the fans and the team. Probably put too much pressure on them in that game against Belgium. But like you say, the attitude here was right. I think it's just came down to the fact of enough is enough. Um, and Italy, I think they went out yesterday and played, like you say, with a lot of confidence. And I think maybe in a strange way, sometimes it's not going to get worse than being booed at the Olympico. So, what's what what's next? The only ways up kind of thing. And I think what they did is embrace that somehow, whatever Manini and his team have done to to bring that energy. And I thought you saw like you say co was absolutely fantastic. You know you can go into the argument should have been called up before etc etc. But no right now right here and now the some of the football Italy played last night was fantastic. I mean they absolutely tore apart what is a very decent Turkish side in hostile environments and played with a a no fear. So that was great to see. And I think with him like you said we've talked about a loss over the talent's there. It's allowing them to play with some freedom and some confidence and it is game two. So, you know, it's something really positive to build on. Uh yesterday uh I previewed the Italy Turkey game with Junk here on the channel and we said talking about the midfield that if Fajoli, Tonali and Ferti had started as they did then Tonali would have been Italy's number six because the way Manchini sees Fajoli is as a box-to-box midfielder. I mean not like a proper box to box but somebody who would support the deepline playmaker in in the buildup. And this is exactly what what happened yesterday. Um Tonali playing as a number six and Fajoli playing as a box-to-box midfielder alongside uh David Fraesi. The midfield worked pretty well. All the team worked really well. One thing that we said about the game was that we probably don't have uh currently the right wide players, the quality wingers to play a 4-33 system. And yesterday it was on paper a 4-3-3 system, but in reality, if you look at the average players position, it was more of a 4-31. >> Yeah. because Fajoli was even more advanced than Sebastiano Spazer who was technically the left winger and um Jako Moraspadori played really really close to Franchesco Pio to Franchesco Pio Esposito um almost as a support striker or attacking midfield. So the wider players were the two fullbacks, Rogeri and Kyote, and not those those who were on paper the attacking wingers. And I think um not Rogeri, um Raspadori was a very interesting tactical key to winning this game, especially in the in the first half because he was then replaced at the break. He he didn't actually play as a right winger. He played more towards the middle. He was praised by Roberto Manchini as well and he helped the team uh not just in the buildup but he literally linked up the midfield and the attack and I think because uh Raspadori was sabbed off at the break perhaps you won't see a lot of comments especially in the international media about his performance but it was key to getting those three goals in the first half. He wasn't uh directly involved in any but he was always involved >> in uh in the in the in the Italy attacks and I think we've off fans have always often been critical of of Jakamo Raspadori but yesterday I think it was the tactical key behind the Italy domination in the first half. Yeah, and I think there sometimes, you know, in we've said in modern football, you don't always have the position that Raspadori likes to play and that's sometimes probably why he's not reached his full potential. But with with it with um with the Azori last night, you could see that completely because like you say that inter interchanging of positions like you said, Voli sometimes coming more f further forward. Um you know, Sebastiano trying to drop in a little bit and then go further out to the left. It was almost like um at times you had a two and a two depending on what time side you were coming down. It was almost like the Raspadori would go forward with Pio at some point. Um and it was very dangerous and I think it was really interesting tactically because you're right that the two um the two fullbacks were the men in the end who gave more width um and for Jolie was able to bring and drag some of the defenders out which gave in a sense Raspadori that space to play in behind and when he had that space in because he was the the center backs kept being dragged out a little bit it was a real problem for Turkey a real problem and that's when we can see and if anyone's watched the the game or at least the highlights There's so many quick passing moves around there. One thing I was going to talk on is the way that Pristiano have that understanding which was quite nice but not and Raspadori as well one touch two touch and it just seemed that the space that was created by him allowed a bit more freedom and it was really good to see for Italy because we aren't talking about the players we're talking about here maybe aren't top tier elite if you take maybe PO out of it but what you did have is a really cohesive unit that work well together. So there's almost uh only positives luckily to talk about after this performance. Uh uh we know how important it is uh uh not to finish bottom in the National League group, not just because of potential relegation, but because finishing in the top three would allow uh the Aduri to be among the city teams in the Euro 2028 uh qualifying draw in um in December. Uh it's uh it it was a refreshing win. It was something that we really needed especially again because there were a lot of young players involved. It was a good mix of young and experienced players. I also like the other debutant Mateo Ri on the left. I think especially the first half was was really strong and uh I like the leadership attitude which is something I wrote on the player ratings of football Italia as well from Tonali after a poor game against Belgium and from Alexandro Bastoni who returned uh to play for Italy national team for the first time since March. His last appearance was in the game against Bosnia in the World Cup playoff final where he was sent off and for this reason he uh missed the previous match against Belgium because of this man. I think this is of course you can't have a team with 23 leaders but you need to start having those leaders especially in a moment where you got these quality players who are slowly coming up and they're slowly getting minutes with Italy national team and I think I mean Tonal is the most expensive Italian player ever interplayers have been dominating in Syria in the last few years so if it's not them then who else it has to be them. It has to be them being the leaders of this group on and off the pitch. And this is something that besides the uh technical and tactical things are starting seeing yesterday in Turkey. >> Yeah, massively. I think even when you say about obviously with the players um you can obviously count for Tasian. He's used to winning you know and now he's leading almost leading Latio as well you know he's really dragging them by the stri of the neck and I listen I was the one who got Lazio wrong. I've got soft spot for Latia, but yet I got them wrong. I didn't think they'd be have to be in real trouble this season. >> Everyone had everyone. >> Forese dragging them to it, you know. So that's leadership quality. Even Pio who's who's young, you know, he he's really doing it by example as well. And you know, he knows how to win. So like you say, Talia, especially Bastoni, these players now have enough experience. You know, they played in the top level. They played in the Champions League. They they know what's what it takes and they they have to be that new not just leadership but also uh explain what Manchini wants to put on his character onto the p pitch what it means to play for the shirt again a little bit you know and and that at that is a great time for it with Italy because there will be younger players coming up so that role is really pivotal one player as well we've got to talk about Donnaruma uh who's is also definitely part of that I actually was a bit um bit concerned about Donnaruma recently just I didn't I was I thought he was a bit of a definitely at fault for the goal last night and there's been a few shaky shaky ones from him. But again, saying that character-wise, you know, he's another one who's I mean, he feels like he's been around for so long now. You know, he's seen it all. So, there are characters there that really do know how to win, how to lead, and also, as I said before, to get that character on for some of these young ones. >> [snorts] >> Yeah, yesterday Jou was I mean surely not in the best position to avoid the um to avoid Turkeykey's goal, but I have to say against Belgium we made like four or five saves in the first half. >> No, I'm not saying oh yeah completely. I mean look against Belgium is fantastic. I think it's the consistency where I think in obviously for uh Manchester City there's been a few moments as well but it's just a situation where for me with that he didn't look quite right last night you know he goes to come for the ball that comes out onto the wing makes that decision and then has to backtrack and he gets caught in no man's land that position he shouldn't be there. >> Yeah. >> Um so there was a couple of things but yeah I mean realistically I'm not criticizing him saying that you know there should be Keki coming in etc. I'm just saying that um you'd like to see a bit this is an opportunity for him now to really step up um because I think if you're looking at experience you know the clubs he's played for you know being at Milan being a pirate center man be playing in top teams different leagues he's done everything you know so he he's really got a role to play and that that starts with consistent performances and character just like Tenali will have to have as well >> another thing I like from Bastoni where he's um postmatch comments to rice sport. They said it was inevitable that my mind would go back to Zenica which is where Italy played against Bosnia in March. I will be in depth to the Italian people for the next four years when faced with difficult situation. I have always chosen to emerge with head held high and take my responsibility. So I I like the fact that he acknowledged his uh depth as he call it towards Italian fans because really uh his his red card and and if the first part of 2026 he had was was really was really a mess for him. And one more thing about Posito and the few numbers that highlight how important he's already become to the Italy national team. know, I mean, it's not the first time we say he should be and he will be the starting Italy striker for at least the next 10 years. >> We got 11 appearances, six goals with Yuri, which means one goal every 102 minutes. It's nearly, if you look at the minutes, it's nearly one goal per game. And and it's impressive from a guy who's who's just 21. But again, I mean, I I always it's always very hard for me to put PS among the players who I mean, even when Inter or Italy don't have a good game, I I always struggle to rate him less than six out of 10 because the physicality he has, the way he keeps the defenders busy, I really love it. And then uh yesterday's goal, it it seems easy, but but it's not necessarily easy with that diving header. It's uh it's what you want to see from from a top class from a striker which is on the way preparing working to become top class. It gives you options as well. You can see it with in obviously you know a lot of the wide players know you know especially when you see the more traditional wingers are always dropping inside trying to come inside to to open up the bodies to shoot um or there's a lot of intricate passing around the box and PO can obviously integrate into that system because he's technically very good but also as well when you do have maybe a lack of that in Italy and you have to rely on the fullbacks a little bit more putting those crosses into the box I mean we've said before it's almost like a dying art but to have someone who's much more than just a target, man. Let's get that straight. But I'm not calling him like an old school bomber or anything like that. But at the same point, he's um he's got that technical ability in the box, but he can also, you know, he can get his head to the ball. He can be physical. And I think sometimes teams don't know what to make of him. Um you know, the fact of his self marketing is also really good. The fact that he's always doing the celebration, you just know he's strong. You know what he thinks that um you know it's not going to be an easy day. And that's why like you say when you come to rate him you're looking he's generally I think he's generally a seven or plus for ina you know and and and probably you know if with the minutes he's getting for Italy I think he'll continue on that trajectory. So again, you know, you're looking uh to to have that option really does allow that sort of weakness on the wide for the wide players to, you know, it gives you more options, allows your fullbacks there to have a bit more um consistency with longer balls in. >> And obviously yesterday for the Esposito brothers was was a special day because they they both started in in the game against Turkey. But I want to finish here talking again a little bit with the man who's grabbing the headlines this morning uh in Italy and rightly so is Michael Cayote. Uh because this morning we got uh quotes coming from Tutto Marcato Web from his agents agent Vigorelli saying that he's been improving even more than he did in Italy when when he was at Fentina and that he sees Kayor playing in the Premier League for for a very long time. Uh I I will add what I always say about about players which is something that Clavon even said a few a few days ago which is uh it's it doesn't matter anymore if a player stays in Italy in Syria or goes abroad. The most important thing is that these guys get playing time and arguably we've been waiting far too long to see Kyote playing with an Azuri shirt. And again, this goes back to the fact that we must trust more our young players. It's true that in March, for example, uh there was Marco Pstra who got his debut um under Jano Gatuzo, but it's also true that there can be room for both um in the Italy national team. And this is a point that Kier de Laser also makes today. He says they say until a few months ago we thought that uh the right back spot was all for Palestra. Well, now we got Kayod in this shape and who who's going to take his spot then? We know Pstra has been injured. H so he hasn't yet played for Chelsea in a competitive in a competitive match in a competitive game this season. But we've got options there. [clears throat] >> They're not attacking options but they're young. They're fresh. And honestly, yesterday after 20 minutes that I was watching the game and I saw another forward run from Kayod, another uh footwork close to the uh Turkey box, I just I just laughed. Really, man. [laughter] I was like, "This is so good. This is so refreshing." Literally, I laughed and I said, "That's it. This is what we want to see. Fresh legs, fresh minds. It won't always be this way." I know. Oh, but >> but this is the way you have to keep going. >> Well, look, you mentioned it before. If you're looking at Italy and you're looking at that regeneration, that rebirth, the fact that we've been talking about younger players, we've been talking about the fact that they need to come through the clubs in Sydia. Like you say, they need to go abroad wherever they get playing time. I completely agree. And you're looking at Italy's right hand side of Bster and Coyote and you're saying, well, that's done for the next 10 years. You look in poss you've just said the facts that's done for the next 10 years. Romano again you know that's done for the next 10 years. You start looking and actually Reetti you you go through the the team even the likes of you know Kalifuri's got some years left in him. You go right down you think actually you know there's something building there and those older players like Tanali they're not over the hill you know on a rumor they're not they still got years in them. So all of a sudden as they get in and Italy, you know, we bark on about the facts of your B
