Welcome live footballer live show from the studio Olympico Italy Neil Belgium 2. You can see from my hairstyle that it's been a very messy night. Very messy night. It's going to be a long night. We expected a revolution. We expected to see something new. Um, we had those signs coming from this morning, from the last few days as well. I've been reporting from Cover Channel and over the last two or three days, you could get a sense that it wasn't uh there wasn't much of a new shape coming from uh the training sessions, the first training session under Manini. We break it all down tonight. I'm still inside the stud Olympico and I've got John Cadleraldi joining me today to examine this match and you guys can also as you know send your questions send your thoughts to discuss this game. Chiao Jang thanks for joining me. >> A pleasure. Well, a pleasure. Not a pleasure because Italy [snorts] were Italy was so bad that it's not a pleasure, but yeah, it was a a really poor performance, particularly the first half. And you're right, we were we were hoping for a revolution, but the the revolution never came. >> No, we didn't. Uh there was just one debutin starting, Alessandro Romano. Um the other debutants, six out of 10 were went to the stance uh weren't even available for this game. Uh there was a debut of Isa Dumbia in the second half in the nine minutes alongside with Zoma winger of Nulber. They also made their debut. Um all the others will have to wait for the coming games. What is the thing, Junk, that worried you the most about this this match? >> Well, I mean, it's hard to it's hard to know where to begin. The the defending was was bad. The attacking was predictable by and large. I thought the second half was a bit better, but they were very slow. The construction phase was very slow and it was also it was a disappointing debut for Romano. There's no two ways about it. He gave away the ball, you know, to for the first goal and he just it looked like that affected him because he was not the player that we've seen in Syria. Um so I mean not to it was an overall poor team performance. I thought it was odd to put Moyes Keen out on the wing. He he did okay, but it seemed >> especially on the right. I I don't remember having seen Kane on the right. >> No. So So it felt like, you know, a couple of times he beat his man, but so what? It was not producing a goalcoring chance. Whereas if he turned his man in front of goal, that would have been the case. There they were just too too many players too flat really. And you know it was it was quite embarrassing the way the two defenders kind of slid in front of the first goal was was really quite astonishing to see two Italian defenders um sold so easily on that. It was a nice finish. It was a clever finish but just the same I think somebody I don't blame so much Manini I think really sold themsself there. So, you know, it was just it was I think it was the lack of creativity, especially in the in the first half, that that worried me most really. It was just so slow. And then we were caught out when when when Belgium broke. I mean, yes, it was a lovely finish, the second goal, but you know, um that was actually probably best moment in the game. They were at least creating a few chances. You know, they I think if they'd have scored a goal, it would have been fair. I don't think, you know, they did have a lot of chances. A good save from Keane and one that Scalini took over the crossbar from, you know, half a yard out. I I think they were worth a goal probably, but the result was absolutely fair, particularly in the first half. If it had been, you know, two, three, four goals for for Belgium in the first half. I think it wouldn't have been it wouldn't have been unfair. So, I mean, we know we've got a good goalkeeper. That's not a surprise. I thought Kambiyagi had a very good game. That was a That was a surprise to me because to be honest, I was surprised he was even in the squad, but he he did have quite a good game. But the rest was was pretty flat really. There wasn't a lot. And I think it just showed maybe this was a tester to see you know Machini will will understand the scale of the work ahead of them really that you know they were just sticking with players that we've had for a while didn't work very well and it it might be time to give um these younger players these debut tents their chance in in the games coming up because it's it is only the Nations League although you It's a great opportunity to try out players and and you know, he could sneak into tournaments through this. I I I think he's got to try and and blood as many new players as he can and find out who's up to the job of taking Italy forward because it felt just now he was he was cram he wanted to play a 4-33, but he didn't really have the right materials to play it, I don't think. No, I agree with you. Uh the the worrying thing I mean probably now he he realizes that he needs to go a certain way. I mean uh the atmosphere already here wasn't that great. It wasn't sold out. The official figure is 47,000 fans. slightly more than 47,000 fans here at the Stadia Olympic, but a big part of one stand was occupied just by kids coming from youth sectors andmies of of local clubs. And when Belgium scored the opener, don't forget this was the first game at home since we since we failed to qualify for the World Cup because the June friendlies were both both played away. So this is the first time that Italy returned playing in Italy after that World Cup and you really needed a different sort of performance especially in the second half. A different sort of attitude to show you know we are as disappointed as you are. We are as embittered as you are and so we want to show something different. The first the feeling you got from the first half wasn't exactly there. So the team was good and then the same happened in the second half as well. Um after the game um Varela was s was sapped off towards the final minutes and he was good as well. Personally I think Varela was obviously not a stand not a standout performance but it was a good Italy performer. At least he showed the the right attitude and yeah the players went to you know they they go and wave at the fans in front of Kulvan in front of Kulvasud. they were just booed and booed and booed by by the whole crowd. And in terms of Manini, I think I wanted to play safely because um I was thinking for example, if you have a club, right, you got Dorenzo and Coyote at your club. I'm I'm not sure that on a big night you play you play Dorenzo. I think he wanted to play safely. he wanted but in the end he came out with a confused performance. We mentioned uh Kane playing on the right wing which never really played in that position. He did sometime play on the left but it's been now what two years at least he hasn't played as a winger probably. Um Kambiagi to me was probably the best outfield player Italy had tonight. uh Ole Donaruma overall had a higher highest rating in my player ratings on the Football Italia website but generally Manini wanted to play safely when you are in a situation where you you don't necessarily need to play safely you need to have clear ideas and even the fact that Dorenzo started over Kyote made me think at some point maybe once you know there are Kane and Posito uh that there is Dorenzo at the back. So maybe he wants this is a 433, but in reality it's going to be a 352. It wasn't even there. It was something in between a 433 and a 352. And and it was just mess. It was just confusion. And um and it's worrying because of that. It's worrying because I think he wasn't quite sure Manina about what he wanted to do, whether that should have been a four-man defense, should have been a three-man defense. He said before the game many times we want to win and play attractive football. But it gives me a little bit the same feelings when Allegri returned to the Juventus bench after staying at home for two years. Now Manilini didn't stay at home because he did have a job but he coached in another type of football in another situation and football has evolved and it gave me the feeling that he's stuck to 2023 maybe >> possibly. I mean I hope I hope you're wrong but it is possible. I mean the only thing I would say is that it didn't start you know Manchini version one did not start brilliantly either. You know they they were trying to um you know there were backward steps when he was trying to make Italy be an attacking team again and to take the initiative. So, you know, that if you're looking for a a crumb of comfort, then you know, that would be it. But I think we'll see these games come thick and fast now. So, we'll see just how quickly he reacts and how sort of radically um he reacts. You know, if if it's another safe um starting 11, I think that would be a worry. But if he goes for it and tries to give, you know, more new faces a a shot, then, you know, maybe maybe can still come out of this with some um some positives. There weren't a lot of positives tonight. That's um that's for sure. But you know the you've got to think that as I say he's got a run now an unprecedented run really of four games in this international break that um he he's got a chance to look at everything at his disposal. He saw tonight that you know a lot of players weren't um good enough or didn't were born well enough. So he he's got work to do and hopefully he can do it. But yeah, I mean it's always a worry when somebody's out of the loop for a while. Can they come back in and just pick things up and do what they did before? And it's quite rare for a manager to achieve that twice in a row, unfortunately. You know, it's it's returns tend to be not as good as the original. Um, and that that could be that could be bad bad news for Italy if that is the case. But I it's one game in. You've got to give them you've got to give him more time. And there were, you know, there there were some, >> you know, there are some interesting names in the group, but it's now it's now up to him to give us something more to, you know, give us some more hope over these next three games, which won't be easy because they're not easy games. >> You know, this was this was potentially one of the easier ones being at home. I I do question, you know, that I think the Olympico is a great place, but you know, a half full Olympico is not is not brilliant. Maybe it might have been it might have been better to to kick off somewhere somewhere smaller, but you know, that that was the choice and you know that the result was not great in front of a half empty stadium. So, but we've got to hope that he can, as I say, um, be a bit more radical and and get something that that works cuz you're right, it didn't work on any level. That formation didn't work. The personnel didn't work. There was a spell, as I say, building up to Belgium's second goal. I think Italy were on top. They did create chances, but they didn't take them. And, you know, that then leaves you open to counterattack. and Belgium took their chance very well. So, you know, that is a that is a worry and you know it's just it carries on this bad feeling that Italy might not be well they're not the force they once were and you know how long will it take for them to get back to being to be that force maybe maybe still a long time. got Manini's reaction um postmatch interview with Rice Sport. Belgium played better in the first half. We took the initiative. The second half could have equalized but we conceded on a counter attack with our error. This is football. The first half was below expectations. Belgium played better, but not the second half. The team did really well until the second goal. We had four or five chances to equalize. We pin them back, but Belgium are a strong side. Now, he is quite positive about the performance. He admits that um he admits that Benjamin had a had a better first half and this is this was clear to everyone. It's true that we had a few chances to equalize in the second half but I don't know J I still think I mean obviously I mean if you look we've been reporting from cover China since the very beginning of the break but Monday uh wasn't an actual training session because a lot of players were coming back from their clubs. So as we said many of them trained in the gym Tuesday and Wednesday there were training session but the first real actual training session was uh was Wednesday then Thursday that bulls and Friday it's uh it's match day. Uh so they only had two or three days to actually prepare for this match. And obviously you can't see big changes when you only have uh two or three days available. At the same time, I mean there were all the ingredients not to see it like strong Italy performance theory bounceback which again we're not saying now. It's something we had written this morning already on football Italia. Uh not many games to prepare. coach coming uh from the pastor which still has good ideas but still the whole coach you had so he has I mean he he has his group already in his mind and uh not many debutants not many new faces now I'm not saying that you have to do be like Baldini and play all the under 21 players because that was a very different situation was friendlies with not much pressure playing praying abroad it wasn't uh like it's it's not something that is replicable again I think because it's you don't expect that and also because some this is something that people don't think about uh the under 21 they have the duties as well they have their games to win as well so many players uh for example Cece of Milan Kachamani Torino I saw comments with people claiming and wanting other young players some of them they can't come because the under 21 has important qualifiers in these breaks. So obviously you need to give them the top players as well otherwise it's just a problem spanning up. Uh so um I'm not saying I wanted a team fuel of the butans. What I'm saying is I expected more courage uh from Manchini because at the end of the day again I think the the whole thing revolves around the Kyod Dorenza thing. Now, I'm not like I'm I'm against all the social media blame, all the all the bad messages that Dorenzo gets on social media. I don't agree with any of that. I think it's very underestimated for his club, for his country as well is being underestimated. But now you going towards an era where you have to, you know, fight for to to get to the Euros in 40 years. You need to fight for the World Cup. Dorenzo won't be there. You need to start implementing new ideas. You need to start giving confidence to new players. I don't see very honestly a difference maker in this team. I don't think with all the respect G Muhammad Ali Zoma is going to make the difference soon. Maybe in one year, maybe in two years, maybe in six months, but probably not now. But there are a few players who are showing good signs. So just just trust them. just just give them their chance and and again I saw a lot of confusion especially from the tactical perspective I didn't see the courage that Manchini had in his first spell because we what we actually saw there was a new Italy in this one it was something in between is like we want to continue with three at the back we want to go with four we going want to go with four at the back but then the wingers are probably not good enough. So, it's it's more of the same mess and it's not what we needed. >> No, definitely not. It's it was disappointing. I mean, I think that's the thing is all we ask fans is is to dream to to be excited. Then you know I think that's you know you're right that sort of in a >> I'm telling you I'm telling the readers after telling you offline this is water is this I'm drinking from here because we're not [laughter] allowed to take to take bottles inside the stadium. So go ahead. Sorry. >> Right. [snorts] Yeah. Although it would be allowed I mean you would be it would be understandable if it was something stronger than water because it was not [laughter] a great performance. But no, I mean that's that's the that's the thing I think is we wanted something that gave us hope for the future and that microcosm of Dorenzo or Coyote. I think that maybe tells its own story in a way that you know there would have been more excitement if if he'd been playing he would have thought well this is something for the for the future whereas Lorenzo's been a great servant you know and he's been a great player for Italy but with every player there comes a time to sort of turn the page and and move on. I'm I'm with you 100%. I don't think you should make him the scapegoat because there were plenty of other players played, you know, much more poorly tonight. But I just globally it was a it was a starting 11 that wasn't a it was such a mish mash of kind of, you know, good intentions but but old faces that we've seen before. We know what they can give. Um and what we wanted was excitement. you know, we would have liked to have seen the two espositos up front together or, you know, just something different to see, you know, this is this is a new direction we're taking, but we didn't get that. And I mean, sadly for for Romano, his debut was not was not brilliant. Um, you know, but again, you know, just as Dorenzo deserves respect for his long career, Romano deserves time because this is, you know, this is a first a first chance for him with the national team. And that's that's difficult. And then if you make a mistake, I think that can play on your mind as well. So, it just it just was it was you're right that it was it was a disappointing team selection. I think that, you know, as soon as I got the notification through of what the starting 11 was, I I thought even some of the players he left out of the squad entirely would have been maybe more exciting um inclusions than than what we got. And it was a you know, it was a pretty flat performance. As I say, they picked up the second half. I thought Maldini came on and did pretty well. Again, not really in his position. And you know, you were kind of crowbaring players into positions that didn't suit them. But there wasn't, you know, I'd like to see more of Dumbia. I think he looked pretty useful. I wasn't sure about Zoma. You know, he didn't beat his man. He tried to beat his man a few times. He didn't manage it. But you you would just like to see more of these young players to to see, you know, have they got it? Haven't they got it? Um because sometimes players surprise you that they're maybe not so good with their club or you know you're not amazed by what they do with their club but they they fit into the Italy set up well. So you know that's but we've got to see them in action. We've got to um we've got to have a have a look at them. Yeah. know this is I see you're showing the um I don't know if I agree that he's clearly not ready for the step up to international football but to tonight was definitely a reality check that you know all these players that we want because they're eligible for two countries I mean I think it's good I think it's important to kind of make them if you can get them commit to Italy but we want to have as big a choice as possible and I wouldn't you know I wouldn't condemn him on the strength of one game, but it wasn't a great it wasn't a great performance. I don't think, you know, I wouldn't necessarily bin him. And I mean, I do I do like Sharon Dur. I see making the point, you know, I watch I watch Florentina week in week out. He has come on leaps and bound. He's a player that's grown on me because I I thought initially that all he really was was a big unit, but he's actually, you know, a pretty decent footballer as well. But you're right as well, you've got to respect the the under 21s as well and let them have, you know, you can't take everything away from them. Although ultimately, you know, the the full national team is the is the big deal.
