A small club making a big impact. >> ELVERSBERG HAVE PULLED OFF ANOTHER SHOCK RESULT. >> ELVERSBERG, just 13,000 residents, but a lot of passion. >> Oh, IS HE THE MAN FOR SET PIECES or what? >> Just 4 years ago, they were in the fourth tier. Now, they're on the big stage. >> Yeah, I'm very, very proud of everyone. >> Elversberg, a village club thrilling the Bundesliga. >> A warm welcome to Spiesen-Elversberg, a small town in the Saarland, situated 15 km northeast of the state capital, Saarbrücken, with just under 13,000 residents. No railway station, but three bakeries. Life here is usually quiet and peaceful until well, until these gentlemen turn up. >> Elversberg have got the opening goal. >> Elversberg, in terms of population, the smallest ever club to reach the Bundesliga, charming an entire nation with their cheeky, carefree attitude. >> Do it again! >> With victories in their opening games against Leverkusen and Gladbach and a thrilling battle against record champions Bayern, the Elv have already made their mark on the German top flight. >> Katterbach, options here. It's Katterbach! The former Bayern player, Elversberg again. They're to rise to every challenge and every occasion, and the minnows are level with a stunner. >> For me, it's no magic potion, to be honest. It's clear very, very hard and structured work with with passion, with desire, and with fun, to be honest. >> The rise of SV Elversberg from the ranks to one of Europe's top five leagues is a true football fairy tale. Founded in 1907, Elversberg played no significant role in the national stage for a long time. But that all changed in the early '90s thanks to this man. Once a Bundesliga player himself at Eintracht Braunschweig and later managing director of a pharmaceutical company in neighboring Saarbrücken, he also set himself the goal of leading Elversberg to the top. The new boss restructured the club, took on its debts, and steered Elversberg to new heights. Until 2021, SV played in the fourth tier. 2022, they moved up to the third division. And in 2023, to Bundesliga 2. In 2025, Elversberg were on the verge of their first ever promotion to the Bundesliga. But in the second leg of the playoff against Heidenheim, all their dreams were shattered. >> Leo Scienza, there is it for Heidenheim. No Bundesliga for Elversberg. >> After that, the club appeared to be coming apart. Coach Horst Steffen and top striker Fisnik Asllani left in the summer. In the winter, key player Younes Abdallah moved to Frankfurt. And in the spring, squad planner Ole Book headed to Dortmund. Despite that, the team under new coach Vincent Wagner achieved the unimaginable. On the final match day of the 2025-26 season, Elversberg needed a win against bottom club Munster, and they kept their nerve. >> Oh, this is nicely done. AND THEY HAVE SCORED! THEY ARE IN FANTASY LAND. ON HE GOES, AND WACHTER PUTS it in for three! Promotion to the BUNDESLIGA FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME! >> 3-0. It's amazing. We did it, and yeah, we went up to Bundesliga. >> The whole village celebrated and could hardly believe it. Elversberg in the Bundesliga! The crowning glory of an incredible journey. And the mission to Mars got off to a spectacular start. In mid-August, Elversberg's first game was at home to none other than the 2024 champions, Bayern Leverkusen. In the Bundesliga's smallest stadium with a capacity of 9,300, the newly promoted side put on a spectacular show and caused a sensation. Petkov! Wachter! It's flipping fantastic. In the second half's first minute, a third goal, and these fans can't believe what they're witnessing here. Relief and joy at the final whistle. The Leverkusen questions. And for Elversberg, their mission to Mars, as they've called their survival bid, is off to the best possible start. Ahead lies some journey for them to conquer and Elversberg. >> The underdogs beat the clear favorites 3-2. >> Surprising not only their opponents, but the whole of the league. The secret to their success? >> Yeah, good organization. >> Very, very hard work, and also very, very encouraged game with the ball. >> Yeah, I think that is that is the key with and against the ball a very high intensity and being very smart. >> A team without star players, but with great team spirit and a clear game plan. >> No long balls, just uncompromising build-up play from the back, getting in behind the defense with clinical passes and finishing. As demonstrated here by key player Lukas Petkov, scorer of Elversberg's first ever Bundesliga goal. >> Mokhtar Stroh. Now Onyeka on loan from Leverkusen. Petkov! And Lukas Petkov. If being here was their moon landing, he has just become their Neil Armstrong. >> Elversberg's tactic is aggressive pressing, working together to put pressure on the opposing defenders, and punishing mistakes in a flash. >> And here's Cole Campbell. Look at this. Cole Campbell! Remarkable! It's two goals inside 10 minutes, and Elversberg now the quickest team ever to score their first two goals in Bundesliga history. >> On match day two, Elversberg played fearlessly, too. This time, stunning Borussia Mönchengladbach with a 4-3 win after trailing 3-1. >> Pickhoff shots. That's not a brilliant save from Moritz Nicolas. And with his first touch after coming on, Maurice Krattenmacher gets Elversberg back into the game. Noah Feil Kojic, he's got KRATTENMACHER WITH HIM. KRATTENMACHER FOR THE WIN! IT'S KRATTENMACHER AND ELVERSBERG HAVE TURNED OVER GLADBACH WITH NOTHING left on the clock. >> Maurice Krattenmacher was the match-winner with a brace. The pacing left winger is one of the key players in Wagner's side. >> Another player with great potential is defensive midfielder Felix Keidel, an uncompromising sweeper in front of the defense and scorer of a dream goal against Gladbach. >> Felix Keidel, the man FOR SET PIECES. OH, IS HE THE MAN FOR SET PIECES OR WHAT? THAT'S A BRILLIANT precision strike. >> Keidel is one of many talented youngsters at Elversberg, and he's just been handed his first Germany call-up by Jürgen Klopp. >> The highlight so far in Elversberg's football fairy tale was the home game on match day three against FC Bayern München. >> Today, the village out in force for the visit of Bundesliga royalty. Dare they dream the fairy tale can continue? Elversberg now truly living in the land of Bundesliga giants. >> The underdogs equalized thanks to former Bayern youth player Cattin Decker. And what a goal it was. Cattin Decker. It opens up here. It's Cattin Decker. What a moment. Elversberg again, rise to every challenge and every occasion. >> In the end, the six-time European club champions proved too strong for Elversberg. >> Yes, the newly promoted side's performance earned praise from the very top. >> They have a a good style with the way they played. They can make it difficult and yeah, I think they're enjoying being in the Bundesliga. I've heard it's a small town, but look, they they have a great team. They have a a chance to to do something special. >> I think the whole story of Elversberg is um is a Cinderella story, you know, it's um pretty exceptional how how they've done it, number one, and how far they got by um believing in in a way to do it. >> Praise from two of the biggest names in world football. Well, you can't get much more recognition than that. >> It was a good game, I think. The moment we scored the equalizer was a good moment. Scoring the equalizer against Bayern Munich as Elversberg, I think it's something very special. But it would be better if we scored the equalizer to the end also. >> Never satisfied, always bold, even against the best. Elversberg, from a small village club to a worthy Bundesliga side with a mindset and determination to succeed even at the very highest level. A story that proves you can achieve a great deal if you dare to dream big.
