“Kloppo said: ‘You can have a go at some curveballs too!’” | Nelson Valdez: What a goal

Borussia Dortmund

Nelson Valdez never let setbacks get him down. After a difficult start, he fought his way through at BVB and won the hearts of the fans – with his determination to always give his all, and with goals such as the one in the 2–0 victory in the ‘little Revierderby’ in Bochum in April 2009. ▶ Subscribe & hit the bell: https://goo.gl/kujepC BVB-TV: https://www.bvb.tv/ Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/bvbofficial Twitter: https://twitter.com/BVB Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bvb09 Facebook: https://facebook.com/BVB TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@bvb Website: https://www.bvb.de/ BVB

What a goal! Before that, I’d been ill with a cold, but then Kloppo rang me and said, ‘Lad, how are you getting on?’ And I was like, ‘Well, I haven’t trained at all and I don’t know if—you know, with the team…’ ‘Don’t worry about it, that’s my problem,’ he told me. And then the next day he put me in from the start. That’s just how Kloppo is – he’s got a knack for it. And it was just brilliant to score a goal like that. Then I ran straight over to Peter to thank him for looking after me all week, because I hadn’t been able to train at all. Normally I’m the sort of player who just smashes it in blindly, but then Kloppo told me, ‘Yeah, you don’t always have to go for it with brute force; sometimes you need to place it properly and so on.’ And then we’d actually been training for a long time on that sort of thing, so that I could pull off a curler like that. When the diagonal ball came from Neven – I think – to Nuri, we’d also discussed that we could look for Nuri with diagonal passes more often. The moment he headed the ball towards me, I thought I had to go for the finish. In Spanish, they say: ‘Buen control es medio gol.’ So if you control the ball well, it’s already half a goal. And that first touch was so perfect, so well placed. I think Maltritz was expecting me to try to dribble past him. He let me take the shot too. And then it’s all about taking that banana curve as much as possible. And everything just fell into place. You can hear it, you can feel it. Just getting that curve and that angle is really, really lovely. That’s a brilliant feeling. I reckon that’s one of my best goals. The way I celebrated was because my son—I’ve always shown my son how to do that sort of thing. That’s why I did it for him, because he’d seen it on the telly. I reckon the Dortmund lads know me. I’m a hard worker, and when goals like that come, it’s a reward for all the hard work I’ve put in. It’s simply a sense of relief, a lovely feeling, a feeling of gratitude. And that’s what football’s all about.
