Drafting Barcelona’s 15 greatest goals: three fans pick and argue over the ranking

Three Barcelona fans snake-draft five goals each to build a list of the club’s 15 greatest goals, spanning Messi, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Maradona, Cruyff and Koeman. No single ranking is agreed; they ask the audience to vote on whose five-goal list is best.

Dan is joined by Diego (@DSpot ) and Levon (Barsalev) to draft the best 15 goals in Barcelona's history. They go through the decades, pick some legends, and see who comes out best. Who won the draft? Hello and welcome. Today is a special edition with a special collaboration of this show. Whether it's Sparse on a podcast, whether it's D-Spot, or whether you just love to follow everything that Leavon aka Barleb comes out with, you have never seen this combo together, at least not in podcast form, because with me and Dan Hilton, it's Dear Loren and Leavon aka Barcel. Now gentlemen, today we are choosing Barcelona's best goals, five each. We are choosing our favorites based on whatever criteria that we as an individuals came up with in making our list. And what we really need from the audience then is to pick who has the best five goal list afterwards. We are doing a snake draft and prior to recording. We did set this up. I unfortunately, and I say unfortunately, got the first pick. Dra has the second pick and Leavon has the third and fourth pick. Difth pick. Okay, you're going to figure it out. We're going back in the opposite direction like as a snake would do. So with all that, Leavonne Diego, I will say quickly hello and then I think we have to dive right in. >> Yeah, I never would have imagined that you were disappointed for getting first pick then. I mean, you get to choose from some glorious moments in Barasa history. So, uh, you know, balls in your pick for my first pick. That's all I'm saying. I mean, my frustration though is that my hot take here is that as I was putting this list together, there is a clear-cut top five for this list. I don't know if you guys felt the same thing, but at least in my time watching live games, so I have some history ones, too, that I wouldn't have seen live. Um, but yeah, I I like made a list, 20 total goals to pick from, and I feel like there's a clear-cut top five. So, all right, I will kick us off. Oh, boy. Here's the thing. There are there's some goals on the wall behind me. Um, and so I unfortunately am not going to the heart the heart picks what the heart wants. So having been on my wall this entire time I've been doing the podcast. Uh, well at least I think I I I had it in year two or three. So it's been up on the wall for about seven years now. Uh, it is I don't know if for those listening I will let you know exactly what I was showing the audience at home. It is Messi versus Real Madrid. It is the 2011 Champions League semi-final. It was his second goal of the match. Busett stood on it and Messi just ran onto it, dribbled four. >> It would have been nothing without the Busett's assist. I mean, let's be honest. >> Um, yeah, sliding it past Casillas. So, yeah, I said the heart the heart Yeah, the heart wants what the heart wants. So, that is and it's and it has it had the thing I struggled with too with this first pick. I will say there are so many Messi goals and so of my list of 20 I think because again we're also limiting it toward to one as in I get one Messi, Leavonne gets one Messi, Diego gets one Messi. So I know that I mean in my top five I had another Messi. So I mean I could have also had another Messi, but I have to go with that Messi. And I I think I I think I screwed the pooch on this one, but I it I had to go Messi first with that one. It's it's a it's a it's a solid pick then. Like honestly, it's a solid pick. I remember >> uh I lived in Karakas at the time when I saw that goal. >> Um and I was at work, but I took like two hours off for the for the semi-final because they're shown in the afternoon just like in the States. Uh and I remember going home that night and I lived in a pretty tough neighborhood. Um, but everybody who had a who had on a Barcelona jersey uh was just smiling at each other and high-fiving each other on my way home. I mean, that that goal was just oh my god, it filled our hearts with such happiness. Solid pick. >> I don't know. The camera is not going to do justice, but I'm literally getting goosebumps just thinking about it. It's so true. I mean, it is not just in Barca history, in Champions League history, in world football uh history. It is one of those goals that I think everybody remembers where they were if they saw it live, if not in replay, but it's undeniably one of the greatest goals of all time. The way that Bus gets played. I'm kidding. Um just the way that Messi took charge and you know what took it right to Madri, Marella was all over the place. Ramos was all over the place and slotting that ball in the end past Casillas for us to then advance to the latter stages of the Champions League. Knocking out the as I like to call him. Real Madrid was just a wonderful moment and yeah undoubtedly I mean we you cannot go wrong with that as a number one pick. Let's let's not forget that this this came in those like two weeks where we played Madrid for like we had the league match then we had the Copa match in which they let the referee just >> kick the hell out of us and and we lost that and that match in the Benabo for the semi-final which was the most important of those three matches. It was so tense like that whole match so tense and then first Messi scores the goal of the off assist and then just dribbles through their whole team >> and making it look easy as well. making it. That's what they so often say when football looks that easy, you know, just how difficult it is. And the degree of difficulty, individual skill, obviously, vision, finish, the importance, the stage, the fact that it was the Champions League, the fact that it's a classical, the fact that it's Messi in the Bernabo. It's it's wow. It's Yeah. Again, goosebumps. Goosebumps. >> Like I'll say too, like it was for me that 2010 2011 season, it's my favorite jersey ever. I think culminating in the 2011 Champions League final against Manchester United. I I think it it is my favorite season and it's my favorite goal from that favorite season by again Messi. All right. Um Diego, I mean I have I have to wait four picks now. So there's not a single chance that my two, three, four, and five Well, at least my two, three, and four are not going to be taken. So go ahead, Diego. Put me out of my misery. >> So just to let the listeners know, we are not allowed to repeat players, >> right? Right. But you can still pick a you can still pick a Messi. >> Sorry. >> Yes. Yes, I can still pick Messi. Uh but just for the sake of I think I guess uniqueness or or ver variety here. U I'm actually going to choose Raldos Chilena. Uh >> I know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I had that. I had that. That was coming. Yeah. I I had that. Of course. I knew that was gone. You know, you know, you know, look at the faces. Look at Le losing his [ __ ] I had to just for remembering that goal, seeing it live, not in the stadium, mind you. In fact, then I was around uh your parks. My sisters were both living in New York and I was there for the summer. Uh just hanging out with my sisters because my parents were sick of me. And I was listening uh uh or I was watching it rather uh in broad daylight but glued to the computer screen with the awful lagging that we were experiencing during that time. Having watched Rivaldo score a brace, the importance of that goal for those that have been living uh you know in a cave for all this time or not up to uh uh you know up to date when it comes to the history of of of Barca during those times we were actually fighting for a place in the Champions League and it was Barca Valenthia at the Camno last day last match day of the La Liga season. Balenthia Barca going head-to-head for a spot, the the fourth spot in La Liga. Ribando had just scored two goals. I think we've all seen it. Is it Frank Dbor or Rono Dor that chips it >> towards the edge? Franto chips it towards the edge of the box, the 18 yard box. Rialdo chests it back towards goal and then just I mean the the the technicality, the amount of skill, not just to produce a Chilea, a bicycle kick to that degree, but but the distance as well. It needed the speed. It needed to have the exact angle right next to the post to get past uh Kanye, I think it was at that time. And yeah, what it meant I mean I think we all remember the images of even Jawan Gaspar president at that time you know jubilant there was a pitch invasion and that was again just to qualify for the Champions League. I don't remember league titles being celebrated with such euphoria and exuberance but I was running around circles in the apartment just couldn't believe what I just saw and yeah I that one has to be up. There's also the 88th minute that that that was to me what made it so incredible too. And and I'll say too, this is this is on my list. This is the first one that I got to see on television live. This is the first one. This is like this is 2001. So again, in the US, we did not have La Liga at all pretty much. So this was like the first one they had. For some reason, this was on what it was Universo or um or the or or OG Telmundo, but like Telmundo News. like this was like one of the first ones uh not like first one, this was the first one on my list that I got to see um actually on television. So yeah, that one it is a special place in my heart and I knew you're going to take it. So I I knew I wasn't going to come back. >> Yeah, that that would have been my first pick. Like if I had the first in the drafts like that was literally it. Um, I mean to do it at that moment in the in the match, the balls on the guy, how can how can you even make an overhead kick kick with balls that big? It's physically impossible. >> Well, because you already scored two goals. That's why. >> And who else but him. >> And amazing goals as well. Like that that might go down as one of the best hat-ticks. >> Yeah. >> Ever. >> That I mean Luis Luis scores Liverpool. Luis was Liverpool's probably to me the best hattick ever, but like there's Yeah, it's it's high high on that list. >> Damn. So, I got third and fourth. >> And again, like Yeah, just just the to the the the fact that, you know, there was a pitch invasion and and and and we really were celebrating finishing fourth in the league as if we had just won the league or the Champions League for that matter. That was different times but I think it lands you know just equally when it comes to importance and yeah just beauty sheer not of beauty. >> Wonderful man. All right. So, uh, for the third pick and my first, uh, I will go with, uh, Roario controlling the ball on his chest and lobing it over the real So, goalkeeper. Um, >> you know, because >> that's Barcelona. Like, you see that goal, it's Barcelona. Even though Roario only had one real season with us, the second season went up in flames fast. >> Yeah. Um, you know, I remember the goal from when I was a kid. Um, it's just fantasy football. Fantasy football. Just the elegance. Um, as if as if he he scored it without a care in the world. Like he he literally brought Copagana Copa Cabana Beach to Spain and to Catalunia. Um, so yeah, I think that's a that's a pretty solid first pick. um September. >> I think it's solid. I'm surprised though. I I thought that you know I was basically giving you assisting you for the Ronaldo against Delta. I thought that would be quite frankly you left being an old You mean against >> that? Compostella. Sorry. Yeah. Compostella. Compostella. >> I mean we we now we're giving now we're giving each other ideas you guys because I got 20 on my list and now we're just talking about them. What? >> No, but even even like let me finish. So even when it comes to Roario, I thought it would be the Kola Devaka against, you know, his also a hattick actually against Real Madrid, his first classical. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Now when it comes to beauty though, the one that you mentioned, Yeah. it was the the it's it was so seamless. It was so effortless and we had seen Roario do this at PSV for like four seasons. >> We had not seen him do this. >> And what was not that? >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Even for Mario, this is like one one of the special ones, you know, maybe the best goal, maybe the best goal he has ever scored as well. The Kaka is also a goal that I absolutely love. And if anybody would have picked Roario before me, I would have >> gone with Kola Debbaka like as soon as I could, but no, it's it's a chess control and and lob. It's just so gorgeous. >> Uh >> a beauty and the goalkeeper just knowing he's chanceless. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The my fourth pick is actually a goal that happened before my time >> and um I know you have both seen it and I just want to take it off the table in case either of you even consider taking it. >> Can I can I guess the year? >> Yeah, you can guess the year. >> Yeah. >> Is the year 1973? >> No. >> No. So that was >> 198 1982. >> Is it 80? >> Yeah. >> 82. >> 82. I mean >> it's 82. >> Um it's it's it's it's bittersweet >> because uh you know this could have been so much more >> than uh the I think two seasons that he spent with us. But it's Maradona against Real Madrid where he first dribbles past the goalkeeper >> and then he waits for the Madrid defender. I don't quite remember who it was for the Madrid defender to come and tackle him and he just like pulls back lets him slide past and puts it in the empty nest like >> man the goal >> the goal the way >> opponent no no >> go it's like a it's the typical goal that you would not that any of us I'll speak for Ourel. Not that I had, you know, half as much or or a fraction of the skill that Marilona had at the time, but I think we've all been in that situation in the park where we've got no defenders around us. The goalkeeper is on the other end and you kind of get on your knees and you he had the ball over the line because that's how badly you know you've schooled the defenders. It was that kind of a scenario, wasn't it? Where Maradona was like, "Come on, throw more at me. Throw more. This is too easy." For me, it's like it's the kind of goal that you could score against a little kid just to punk him except that Maradona is the smallest guy on the pitch >> and he does it against ruthless defenders. No, that goal that goal is just uh anybody who does not know that goal, you're going to love seeing it right now when uh Dan puts it on the on the video. Um so yeah, those are my third and fourth picks. >> Yeah. Um they might they might be surprising to you guys. >> Very solid >> because they're not the most famous goals. Um nor are they goals in the biggest matches but uh >> and one one more point Lev actually because that was obviously on my list as well. I was reading up on that goal and there was a standing ovation >> in it was a like a Ronaldinho type scenario. Mind you, this is in the Bernabo and the audience the the crowd actually applauded that goal. So yeah, one of those moments rare moments between Barca Madrid Madrid Bara history where the opposing crowd >> Nobody in the C comes for a Madrid player ever, nor should we, but yes, it's a good one. >> Yeah, just once. >> It happened once. Who didn't applaud? >> I knew this the going to be the followup. It was I think it was in the 70s. It was an English player that played for Madrid. Not necessarily very famous. Uh what at all, but I I will >> look up the name. I'm drawing a blank here, but it did happen on one occasion. >> Was it It was Was it Lorie Cunningham? >> That's Lori Cunningham. Huh. >> All right. Yeah. >> All right. But yeah, good for pointing that out. I I was going to mention it, then I forgot it because I'm just like thinking about the goal itself, like All right. So, Good picks. So we are on So we're in five, which is back over to mean. >> Yeah, >> in that case. >> Damn. >> Um, okay. You see, you you said your top five was easy, Dan. I'm I'm was struggling with my top 15 even, you know. Um and looking over this list at right now the white tachando as we are going over the goals I guess number coming in in number five in the top alltime goals mind you this is the first round pick in Bara's history I would be hardressed not to put Ronald Kum in there. >> Yeah. Okay. >> You know that free kick Sandoria first one >> I was asleep. I was an 11-year-old kid that tried to watch the entire final, a boring ass final as how I remembered it, that went the distance and I wasn't awake. Uh it was not until the the next day when I got to see the goal, but obviously I'm talking about the one of the one and only goal in that game, the Kumman free kick, which yeah, I mean, you know, a beauty long distance. I think he had Stokov and Bakero around him if I'm not mistaken. And he just said, you know, in in classic Kumman style at the time, you know, hold your beers. I've got this one. And um you know it's it's again I guess the significance the fact that there was so much writing on that the fact that we had been in that situation uh in in previous seasons previous years or we should have been in that situation more often obviously but uh seeing that one almost slip away against a side that was inferior at least in terms of names but the fact that it was so drawn out that we had chances chances tok hitting the post as well. Um it was it was a grimy tough affair very gritty type of chances as well >> but then Kumman stepping up and delivering the goods K on the bench you know the the dream team yeah I I I I would be hardressed not to put Kuman in that top five in the first round. Yeah, that was definitely one that I was gonna take very soon. But good point by you as well to mention that I've if you go back and watch that match because I think on even FC Barcelona's like official page they have that match in full or you can it's one of the more easier ones to find from history and you're absolutely right is 112th minute and you're like oh it's 112th minute Barcelona win their first at the time the uh European Cup right now the Champions League but that match is boring. It is a it is a rough watch, right? And and I always tell people like >> Ky effect, >> right? And like there are some matches that are lowscoring that are really really good. Like we know this obviously anybody listening to this believes this but like I I'll tell people if I do a even a college game I'll go there are zero zeros that are you know hey we got a lot going on and then there were zero zeros. I was like this is just awful. And yeah that that is one of the the let's say more boring matches but even yeah the stage stadium uh Kumman doing his thing all that stuff. Exactly. >> Okay. Um, back to me and I have to head back up to the I I know this is mainly in audio format as well as video, but I have two goals up on my wall and I was worried that you were going to take either of them. So, thank goodness I said it's on brand. I've got to keep it. And I know I know generationally I've got now 2011 2009. So, I'm I'm kind of again picking a special time for me. Um, but it's got to be for me. And I know no one else is going to take an Iniesta, but again, I had to. Uh, it is Iniesta in the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2009, second leg against Chelsea. Again, in a season that Barcelona would obviously go on to win another Champions League. So, it is legitimately to me it feels like the Champions League winning goal because of the way they outclass Manchester United. And in the final, uh, it comes stoppage time again, ties it at 1-1, sends Barcelona through. Uh, Messi plays the square ball to Iniasa, so Messi gets the assist. Uh, and to me, it is a goal that I just dream of. It is one where he is I mean, it wasn't necessarily completely stationary, but Iniasa was basically stationary at the top of the box and just swings his leg through it and it is it is picture perfect right in the back of the net. So, um, yeah, I think I mentioned, yeah, it comes against Chelsea, too. So, and even though that that tie in itself had so much controversy, the fun part is if it had been someone I think like a PK or we'll say a more controversial figure, I think I I don't think it would be as seen with such reverence by everybody else, but because it's Iniesta and as is the case in
