Andy Goldstein slams the Premier League over the delayed Manchester City punishment as the league becomes a laughing stock

The show reacts to Manchester City's win at Liverpool and the Premier League's continued wait over City's punishment, with hosts, guests and callers debating timing, severity and fairness. Most argue the Premier League must settle the case quickly or the season will become a mockery; one voice says a title won on the pitch would still be earned, while another insists City's success was built on cheating.

Andy Goldstein & Darren Bent give their verdict on Manchester City's comprehensive 3-0 win over Liverpool in the Premier League, with Goldstein claiming the lack of punishment for Enzo Maresca's side is making a "mockery" of the season. It's 5:00. It's the big one. Should teams refuse to play Man City this season? >> Well, this is getting very messy for Liverpool. Liverpool nil. Manchester City three. Ryan Chery races down to the corner flag. Puffs out his chest in celebration. 10-man Liverpool nil. Manchester City. >> And I've never been to a game where it felt like it didn't matter. We've just left and it wasn't so much about Liverpool. It was watching City win. They've made a farce for the league. >> All they can do is what they did for the weekend. That is all they can do. Stick together, go and play good football and win games of football. And that's all they can do. >> Yeah, Man City's perfect start to the season continued yesterday. A three-0 win at Liverpool. The first game, of course, he's been found guilty of their charges. Leaves them three points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Prem. Their boss Enzo Moresca spoke to the media after the game. He said he's pleased with how his side dealt with a difficult couple of weeks. >> I said during the week uh we need to learn how to deal with the outside noise because of the situation and the noise will be always there. So we need to learn how to deal with that. But at the same time we need to try to make uh our noise that is win games like we have done today because at the end of the game I think uh our fans they were sinking so the noise was from us and not from uh the environment. >> Let's talk about the game first. >> I got a question. Why would I hold up bananas? >> Because it's a sort of throwback to what they used to do in the crowd when they were like away to chilling on a Tuesday night. >> Okay, cool. I mean, I don't get the reference, but yeah. >> Well, it's it's basically the fans are looking to say, "We don't care wherever you put us. We'll always support Man City type of thing." >> Okay, cool. >> We've been here before. If you put us in the >> some that is because any new color fan would go, "What the hell are they doing?" >> Yeah. Uh, look, it was a great performance from Man City, right? Take nothing away. It was I mean, that Turkey goal was just fantastic. >> Oh my good. >> The Harland smash was just one. I mean, they just looked brilliant, right? As great as they were, and they were, they were great. There was some awful performances from Liverpool. Fin was terrible. >> The winger that they paid 120 million. >> Barcola, >> Barcola, Brad. I mean, he was ter they looked really out of sorts Liverpool. But man, fair play. Listen, if we're talking about them on the pitch, they looked unbelievable against Liverpool. >> They did. They really did a die as well. Some really good performances there. Semeno, we know how good he is. >> Um, they look solid, rock solid. And you're right, from Liverpool's perspective, >> not great at all. I mean, I like Jac and Van Dark as center. I'm still not sure about Kirz at left back. I like Arajo. Think he's looked okay. Um, but they're deplet they're depleted in attacking areas, aren't they? Now, you you remove Ech and Gako who's come back this season on fire. You're always going to struggle, but you're right. I I definitely expected more from Florian vers. I'm still I'm still a big fan of his. I expected more from Barc. >> Cuz he's a good player, man. >> Since he's been in a Liverpool shirt, he's not been a good player. >> Okay. He's been appalling. >> No, I would say appalling. Oh, I would. >> No, he's not been a >> I would. >> No way. >> Yeah, he's been an absolute flop. >> No. Okay. Yeah. No. Okay, but he's not been appalling, but there's been times last season. He looked decent. But >> that being said, I spoke to more from Barcola as well. >> But again, you add you you take those players away, they're going to struggle, but they just got well and truly destroyed. And I mean, I like Kumas, young kid as well. I like Munos. They they were better than the other two who cost over200 million pounds. But um I like Andonio, Lac, the coach. of course is a big step up when you go from Bournemouth to Liverpool. The expectation levels go through the roof, but I think he's a really good coach and I think he will get it right. >> Of course he will. >> But they've just got such a like when you look at Liverpool's squad, it ain't the thickest by the way. It ain't the deepest especially when you put in they've got no Connor Bradley. They've got no Gvani Leone who are like the center half. So Boslow was a big miss. Isak Gako Ekit. I mean you take that that caliber of player out of any squad. >> Yes, you're right. >> They're going to struggle. >> You're right. >> So >> let's talk about Man City now, right? Because um firstly the Man City fans, if it was our team, we'd be doing the same, right? We' be waving yellow bananas about and backing our teams. We got beat by the cheese. We all that's what football fans do. I don't have a problem with that at all. Right. >> But we are because of the Premier League and it's not Man City's fault. >> We are in a such a bizarre situation >> where at some stage this season, I would like to think that they will come up with the punishment. I don't know what it is, but they will come up with it. >> I think they're going to have to. that I mean it it make it just makes it become a laughingtock that you could have a team right we're going to be in this scenario either we're going to have a team that win the Premier League and Richard Masters turns to them and goes here's a trophy but I'll be taking it back cuz you'll be playing in the championship which makes a mockery of the whole thing >> um either that or halfway through the season they'll be docked 70 points and then they'll be at the bottom of the Premier League again. I think that's unfair because Liverpool playing a Man City yesterday that >> I'm going for the title. >> Yeah. and a team in six weeks if you know if the if the if the um penalty comes up in four weeks relegation. >> Yeah. It just makes a mockery of the whole thing. The Premier League have handled it so badly. >> Yeah. It's you know it's it's it is and that that's why you you want to see a resolution sooner rather than later so everyone can move past this and you know exactly what's what's happening because as you said there there's no other planet and if if Man City win it this season they would have earned it. And I said to you before, didn't I? >> I'd say I disagree with that. >> Okay, I get it. Cuz of the players that they've acquired, right? >> Just the shape of the club now wouldn't be in the shape the club is >> without the cheating. I get that. >> Without the cheating. >> Remember what I said to you that they look no weaker. There's no pep there. I said that to you. They don't. >> It's still early days. Yeah. >> They don't at the moment. >> I mean, they've gone to Anfield moment. Yeah. So, it's >> But they you you can't say that they would be this juggernaut >> anyway. Oh, no. I don't think so because >> that that club was mid-table when they started cheating. >> Well, I I I think for for the Premier League, they need to sort it out because you're right, it will become a um it will become a fast and a bit of a mockery if you all of a sudden Richard Masters hands the captain whoever who's captain Man City says Ruben Diaz. >> Yeah. >> The Premier League title when all this is the Premier League just can't allow that to happen. >> It' be awful for their brand. >> Awful. And that's why I've heard so many different arguments. Some of them make sense to me, some don't. I understand Premier League, they need to punish City, but they also don't want to hurt their brand. Now, does the Premier League is the Premier League better for having Manchester City in it? Yes. Is it better for having the worldass players? Like, you don't want to lose Harlem from the Premier League? No, you don't. >> You don't want to lose them players. You just don't >> like Churkey like a joy to watch. >> Exactly. You don't want to lose these players, >> but at the same time, the Premier League have got to do something that shows everyone else who's looking in this will not be >> tolerated. I agree. Right. Because if you demote them, we lose them. >> We lose them. and you lose all the players at the point. >> And we lose all the players. I I think maybe that the the fairest thing to do, if you can use that word, would be to demote or to to penalize them maybe 40 points a season for the next however many five seasons. >> No transfer ban. No transfer, sorry, a transfer man. >> And then they're playing Premier League football. I would imagine a few of the players, quite a lot of them would stay on because it's Man City and a point to prove etc. We wouldn't lose them from the Prem >> and they wouldn't be winning it for the next five years. I just wonder again I'm not a financial expert I don't know >> right this is I need some if you're a financial expert and you fancy coming on feel free have a question so >> ask me I know it >> we know that they have been they have been found guilty by the Premier League of 114 charges 115 >> for what they've been doing previously right >> so after they are >> 18 2018 >> right so now after they have been found guilty they're punished right >> will are they is their club at a point now where they can spend this type of money because the revenue is now here or would they have to drop back to what their revenue. Do you make sense? Does that make sense to you? >> So, and and I I don't understand is now they they've faced the punishment. >> Great question. >> Like, >> so here's the thing. My understanding is there needed to be a start date and an end date for them to be investigated. Yeah. And that was the nine years. Yeah. >> But just because they've decided to end it, this is my understanding of it, at 2018, that doesn't mean 2019, from 2020, from 20 they weren't doing the same thing. So, I I don't know if once that's over, there'll be another investigation. >> Look, I know they've got a start date and an end date. the Premier League had to to get this thing to come to a head. But now that they've been found guilty >> and then say if it goes back to normal after the punishment and they've got their punishment, we know what we were doing. >> Are they are they still at a point then where they can spend this crazy money because now they're at that commercial level or do they drop back to >> Yeah. I I Well, they're not going to be at the commercial level they claim to be. >> No. So they will have to drop So then will they lose players then because of >> I don't know. And also you don't know whether or not they're going to be told the owners have to sell the club. >> Yeah. I mean I mean wow it's a mad one. But the one of the questions we're going to ask is do you think teams should be allowed to refuse to play Man City? I don't really know how that would work, >> but this this is what we're alluding to before. It's just not it's not a level playing field at the moment. No, >> you could be playing a totally different Man City, one fighting for relegation and one trying to win the Premier League in one season. >> 100%. >> Which is bizarre. You would rather play Man City when they're when they've just been deducted 80 points and they're in the bottom three. >> Yeah. Because the mentality they were going to be over the place >> and and you're you would then go to the top of the Premier League. they would be down the bottom going, "What's the point?" >> Yeah. >> And it's a totally different game to the one Liverpool had yesterday. >> Well, this is why the Premier League have got to um >> act now. >> Act now. But I just don't know when. I mean, I sat listen to a podcast the other day, right, on the way to Cardiff for an hour. >> 21 minutes to go. >> That's banned in it. It's gone in it. Not bad. It's gone. That >> all right. Was it the boot room? >> Talking about boots. >> No, it was um like for a long time. It was a financial guy talking for about an hour. I don't know why I'm listening. And these are just making so like these guys who are experts financially and they are the what they were saying was making a lot of sense, right? But no one has an idea or clue what's going to happen. >> Someone found out the breakfast show this morning and said that um in F1, for sake, if you get caught using a you know a bit of technology on your car, you instantly get hit with the ban and the point penalty instantly done. So you know where you are and you can't carry on racing until that car doesn't have that bit of technology that you shouldn't have. >> Yeah. >> In the prem I mean it's quite embarrassing. multi-billion pound industry and they still haven't got this right. >> No. I mean, part of me does think they might get relegated to like League 2. That that's still an option. >> I don't think that will happen. >> Well, cuz you don't think the Premier League wants to hurt their >> No, I don't I don't think we want them out of the Premier League. We want them to have a If you're asking me right now, having known everything I know, >> to keep them in the Premier League, I think if they had for the amount of seasons they were >> cheating, >> that they were cheating, what was that? Nine. M >> if they started every Premier League campaign offus 40 so they could just keep their head above water every single season and give them a a transfer ban for I don't know five windows. >> Yeah. >> And a and a and a fine as much as they over spent by 8 850 million. >> Yeah. >> I think that would be enough. >> Yeah. I mean part part of me like part of me does think no league 2 man. >> Yeah. But if they go to League Two they'll be up in two years and it's it's over. >> No, there's no guarantees there because they're going to lose all their players. They're effectively starting from scratch. I don't think they are starting for >> one of them play they have to lean on the academy and imagine if they got transfer ban as well. >> Yeah that would make a difference. though. No, no guarantees, mate. >> Trenches down there. Leaders, >> we just need to know, right? We need to know. >> I think the more the more we continue with our Premier League season and the more Man City smash teams >> Yeah. >> the bigger the pressure will become cuz what was bizarre is we we were quite lucky that the news broke in the international week when there was no news and the Man City and then we were talking about it all the time, right? And it sort of died down a bit. It was like they were disgraced, they were disgraced and it just all died down when Premier League football's come back. But now I'm listening to loads of Liverpool fans going like it's disgusting. and it shouldn't be allowed kick and I'm like >> yeah but we've had that comp just cuz they beat you right you it feels worse for Liverpool >> oh my goodness there's more than they see them absolutely season but >> I I look at other clubs like the Everton's who got punished quick shepherd United punished quick >> I'm guilty these your points >> bam done it's bit embarrassing >> uh let's take your calls I know lots of you want to have you say you can by picking up the phone should teams refuse to play Man City I don't know how that would work but what do you make of it all I suppose is the question 03717 7234 dial that you'll be next live on drive. Should we go to the phone lines? We're talking all things man. >> It was better be TKO. Seventh round >> finished. >> Yes. Marty's a Liverpool fan. He won't be happy. Mighty Mark. >> Good morning. All right. By afternoon rather. >> How are you my friend? You good? You good Monday? Had a good day? >> Uh yeah, not not too bad. Bad the weather anyway. >> Okay. Go on then. What What do you want to say about all things either your team or City? Uh to be perfectly honest with you, I wasn't none of the Liverpool fans were impressed with the result yesterday, were we? I don't think Mark Kavanaaugh was uh particularly very good either, was he? Um I seen some yellow cards going on. I mean, clearly went in uh Man City's favor. Um but in in terms of uh in terms of obviously as teams playing the league uh playing for um uh the uh what's basically not wanting to uh you sorry Martin say that part again. >> What bit I said in terms of us not wanting to play other Man City. I've got to be honest there's just no point in it. >> Hold on. Did you forget the words Man City? Is that what you forgot? I did. Yeah. Well, fun, can't you? >> Of course you can. Of course you can. Go on. You think it's unfair, do you? >> Yeah. Um, what you mean the decisions Chris Cav made? >> No, no, no. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the fact that you're playing them when they're trying to win the Prem and then in I don't know, four weeks time, five weeks, 3 weeks, they might get a massive points deduction and it's a totally different game for you. >> But how's that going to pan out though? Because technically when Yeah, technically when you think about it, they're already appealing it. How long's that going to be? >> Well, >> so you could What's that? A year, you know? There's going to it's another year. It'sund 114 charges, you know, and like bonkers. Absolutely start raing bonkers, mate. But what can you do about you? Just got to get on with it. You know what I mean? Listen, I am upset with the loss yesterday. I think we all are. But, you know, there's nothing we can do about it. We just got to kind of get on. >> Okay, Mike, thanks for be call. Uh Sam, I hope he can remember the words Man City. Hello Sam. >> Hello Andy. Hello Beny. You all right? >> Good man. How are you today? You all right? You well? >> Yeah. Yeah. Not too bad. And Andy, I don't know if you just a quick one. I don't if you can remember. I was the teacher that called in uh for getting up for Messi when he scored the hatrick in the World Cup. >> What happened? >> I was the uh you you had a phone in in the morning. And I was the teacher that um set an alarm to watch Messi in the World Cup. >> Oh, well, while Andy was on breakfast. >> Oh, I was doing the breakfast show. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> How good were those How good were those breakfast shows, by the way, back in the day? >> I I don't listen to the breakfast show anymore. >> I say no more. I say no more. What would you like to say, Sam? >> Um I I just I just feel as though like the whole situation at the moment is just I don't know, just a waste of time. Um, like even even watching Arsenal over the weekend, you know, I'm an Arsenal fan, a store Arsenal fan, and even our win, I'm like, where does it actually leave us? Um, because we don't know actually where Man City are. I know they're technically top, but come the end of the season, they could be bottom of the league. So, >> I think though, Sam, I think for Arsenal, right, it's just win the games. Forget about like Man City's um position in the table is irrelevant to Arsenals. Just win your games. You you may be top, you may not, but just if you keep winning, playing well, then the rest will take care of itself. >> No, but you got to know what's happening because I don't know when your games are with them. Yeah. >> Right. >> But let's just say they've got an 80 point deduction. >> It doesn't really matter if you lose to them. >> No, it doesn't. But my point is for Arsenal cuz I watched them at the weekend, got away with one lead. Just win games. Don't worry about Man City. Don't be thinking, well, it's okay. We might be No, just win your games. Go from there. We play Manchester City, first one, November 29th at the Emirates. >> Okay. So, I mean, there's a chance we might know something by then. >> And then and then the 30th of the 30th of January at City. >> Oh, that close. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Leona. Hi, Lee. >> Lee. >> Hi. Hi, Andy. Hi, Darren. >> What were you doing the first time I went? Lee. >> Darren. >> Yo, >> Andy. I ah >> I replied you can hear me >> have you ever used a telephone before >> I don't think you have >> Lee Lee wha
