"DEFEATED MAN!" Crystal Palace fans & Alan Pardew outline ISSUES as pressure GROWS on Pierre Sage
Pressure grows on Pierre Sage as Crystal Palace fans and Alan Pardew discuss the issues after the Brighton thrashing
The video focuses on the pressure on Pierre Sage after Crystal Palace's 5-0 defeat to Brighton. Alan Pardew says the Europa League is a step up, the squad has lost too much quality, and Sage is still adapting to the Premier League, but should get more games; some Palace fans want Sage out and criticise the players and manager for not acknowledging the away fans.
- The team did not represent the club, the responsibility is mine, and they must prove next game that this was a big mistake and can bounce back — After a 5-0 derby defeat to Brighton, he apologised to fans and took responsibility
- The Europa League is a level up from the Conference League and Palace will find it very difficult, especially after this defeat; they were not ready for Brighton's fast start — The quality of opposition is higher; the home team starts like a tornado, Palace were second best from kick-off, were 3-0 down after 41 minutes and lost 5-0
- Palace's back three or five looks a problem after losing top defenders; they have also lost too many game-changers up front and no longer look at that level — The replacements and reshuffling look problematic; they have lost match-winners like Zaha over recent years, and despite winning a cup last season the squad now looks short of that level
- Sage got found out by the intensity of Brighton; you do not know that intensity until you experience it — Brighton's intensity exposed the gap; Pardew compared it to his own baptism managing Newcastle United against Sunderland
- Sage has to go — The start has been poor, they have not played well in most games, only the Leeds game was decent, and he believes Sage has lost the dressing room
- Sage deserves a run of games and should not be sacked yet — There is still plenty of time to turn it around; there are issues in the dressing room, but he deserves a few more games
- The players and manager showed a lack of responsibility by not going over to the away fans — Fans travel every week and deserve acknowledgement; he says only a few players went over and Sage barely did
- If Palace decide to change manager, Eddie is the one they should go for — Eddie is available and several clubs could change managers soon, so if they act they should do it now
- Sage should go — He was excited when Sage arrived, but now Sage looks uninterested on the sideline, like a defeated man
- Sage shows no emotion on the sideline, which I dislike; his stand-back approach is just his style, and the real worry is the team performing far below the Glasner era and the Premier League being far more intense than Ligue 1 — Pardew says some managers stand back and watch; he is more worried Palace have been nowhere near Glasner's team except against Leeds, and Sage is still adapting to the Premier League's intensity and physical demands

Uh, two tribes. One of them is your tribe, Crystal Palace. [laughter] Got battered, mate. >> Oh, dear me. This is This is when we need Candy for anyone. >> No, no, no, no, no. We don't do all that. That's Saturday night. That's, you know, I see Jamar in the week. I I patted him on the back. So, like, your show's brilliant. It's different to our show, but it's great. Brilliant. Well done. Keep it up. And they do. They're good. >> Whooping whatever they're doing. But we don't we don't do masks match. We don't we don't need all that periphery. >> It kind of reminds me of like back in the day, you know, when they used to like the children of TV like in a broom cupboard. That's what the sports kind of like. They got props. They got things on the wall. >> Man and deck them. >> Yeah. Brilliant. It's brilliant. Good show. >> What about Jason's there? Do you like it? >> Done. Well, >> looks all right, doesn't it? >> He's a good advert for the old air trans. I might have to do it myself. >> Well, there you go. That little tufted at the front. >> Little tough. I think he looks good, man. >> Tufty. >> Looks very good. Uh he he's the show's growing like he said. It's brilliant. >> Um right, let's now hear from the Crystal Palace boss PS. >> Oh dear. >> Who spoke to Talk Sport after their five defeat against Brighton. Whooping. I just want to apologize because we didn't represent our club his story and especially in this re rivalry and I'm responsible of that and I just want to to be sorry and to show them in the next game that that was a big mistake but we are able to come back. >> Pods, what would be going through PSG's head right now after getting battered 5-0? Well, the one thing I wouldn't have said was um we have to show them in our next game because you know where the next game is. >> Go on. >> Victas away >> on Thursday night. >> Um and and good luck with that. Um >> good food over there though. You >> pardon? >> Good munch over there though. [laughter] >> That's not really why they're going over there. No way. >> But they are, you know, they're stepping up a level because that Europa League is definitely a level up from the conference. There's no doubt about that. the quality of the opposition and they'll find that very very difficult particularly on the back of that performance today. If you go to any Crystal Palace player, right, who's played in one of those games and obviously I can talk from my own experience, the start, you got to be ready. That is like that is almost a key moment for for the manager or the player in that dressing room. Be ready for a a tornado start from the home team here. That is what's coming and they and they weren't ready for it. They they were second best for from the kickoff and uh they ended up concerning last night. >> Yeah. If you're not if you're not set and then then you got nowhere to go from there from you got nowhere to go if you don't pick up the pace of a game straight away and and and put a dampener on it like when you put a candle out put that you know take the oxygen out of the out take the oxygen out of the heat then you got no heat and they didn't do that thing out of the game. >> Yeah. Exactly. And um unfortunately you got blown away. 3-0 down, 41 minutes on the clock. Uh you got a long long long way to go and in the end it's five. So then you know that's even more you know rubbing salt in the wound. >> Why have I had no Brighton fans call us? Why where are the Brighton fans? >> They're all they're all down the front having fish and chips and beers. >> They they definitely are, aren't they? >> Because you know you're getting pecked by the seagulls. I need to hear it. Why am I not getting pecked by the seagulls? Cuz that's what I think I think is a blessing in disguise. Have you not let them on? >> No. What I think they've done. What I think they they've showing a bit of respect and a bit of class by not coming on and gloating. What they've done is 5-0. We're just going >> Brighton fans come on to the final word. >> Speak to a former Crystal Palace player and manager. >> Palace legend over here. >> We don't need any gloating. It's very well done Brighton. >> I want the Brighton fans, all of you to call us now. 03717234. Tony Bloom, call us. Everyone can call us. You're all welcome. [laughter] Um, Pods, what tactical changes would you make with this? You go in there tomorrow, you go, "Palace, I'm home. I'm on, guys." Right. What's the first thing you do? I think the manager um was brought in uh to carry on the system that Oliver played, right? Uh but you've taken two really top top players out of that back three. Gaian Laquire who's obviously gone to Chelsea who actually hasn't started particularly great for Chelsea but uh better yesterday >> and Chelse got the result um and and and the replacement of that and moving it around that to me looks a problem uh you know just from what I've seen today that back three five or whatever you want to call it with the two wing backs looks and Munes has gone obviously uh now at Forest they've lost some and and when you look at the top of the pitch what they've lost over the last four or five years and I go all the way back to Zaha and Lisa etc etc they've lost a lot of talent a lot of game changers as a they've lost match winners so now suddenly this Crystal Palace team although it won the cup last year is beginning to look like a team that is not at that level and um this this manager who's new I think the manager probably probably got found out a little bit today by the intensity of that Brighton performance that he probably was expecting something like it, but until you experience it, you don't know. It's a bit like when I was Newcastle >> manager baptism of fire. >> I've played in all derbies. I've I've managed derbies. I'm an experienced manager. I went to Newcastle Sunderland. Wow. I was like, "Wow, is this what it's really like?" You know, when I went to to Sunderland for the further for the first time. So, um he had found that out today. And um well, I think changes are going to be something he's going to have to look. >> Changes are a foot. Yeah, absolutely. Of course, you know, Walton being off form doesn't help. >> But Wart's not going to be able to when what Walton's good at is when he's got time when you got the ball. If you ain't got the ball when he ain't got time, then suddenly he look he can look ordinary. >> Matta and S miss him. >> Yeah, of course. And S listen, there's a big issue about this this player who obviously wanted to go. I think he was very close to going to Liverpool and it didn't happen. You know, where's his mindset? You know, said he's got a lot going on. I feel for the manager. Um, and he needs help. I think the staff around him need to really kind of get behind him and and support him now because he's in a difficult patch. >> Yeah, it is difficult. This is from Kevin. And obviously, you know, my stage name is Majestic. My real name is Kevin. >> Yeah. >> Um, so it's not me, by the way. I have not text 81089. I've not watched 037172. >> Come on, listen. Listen, because we've, you know, we always get it for you and Tottenham. So it's no no problem. I can take it. >> Just want to let >> my skin is thick. Don't worry about that. >> It's not for you luckily. >> Oh, good. >> Another Arsenal fan asking for respect. >> Oh, >> a team taught with houseery and dark arts. Two trophies in eight years and spent a billion. Respect is given when you earn it. That's from Kevin. And he's not happy. >> He's not happy with Luke the Aran who says RBT. That's what's deserved for AFC is what he said. I think when you're a champions, uh, everyone wants to shoot you down. So, I don't think it's just it's not personal against Arsenal. Chelsea have it. Man United have had it in the past. Manchester City have had it. It's just comes with the territory. You just got to, you know, you just got to let it sort of ride over you. >> Listen, when you're at the top, >> one nil. >> When you're at the top, people come for you, don't they? >> Absolutely. >> That's it. Sorry, I've just tuned in. Have you been pondering which other two sides are getting getting relegated with Sunderland? The squad selection today, those subs leaving no striker on the pitch for the last half hour. We are down. Gutted. That's from Chris. >> Well, I was at Fulham uh Saturday, who were bottom of the league, by the way. Bottom of the league. >> They were >> uh they were at the bottom of the league. They are not now. Um and Hull. Wow. They were so poor. I actually looked at the league table to see how many points they had at the end of the game, thinking, well, they got to get another 30 points yet. I can't see it. Hole or Fulham? >> Hull. Not Fulham. Fulham like miles was better on the performance on that particular day. >> Um Fulham looked okay yesterday. They they're a little bit like Nottingham Forest. You know, they don't look like there's a lot of goals in the team unfortunately. Um and um that might hold them back, but I think the experience and the young players they got uh they'll be okay. >> Yeah. Right. That best tickas game is live on Talk Sport 2 on Thursday evening. Um, but if you want to discuss >> all I tell you what you if you're a Crystal Palace fan, you better open a bottle of red wine, sit on your sofa, and hope for the best. >> Yeah, >> but if you want to discuss that whooping by Brighton, the number >> Why is it a whooping? Why do you >> It's 5 like that. >> That's a whooping. >> So, what's 4-0 then? >> A whooping. [laughter] >> What's 3-0? >> A whooping. >> Okay. >> Then two nil is a win. >> Two is a win. anything over. Listen, what's it what's the >> I used to say to my staff, right? This is true. Absolutely true. I used to say this, right? >> We can never get beat 4-0 cuz 4-0 in the press is a thrashing. >> Yeah. >> Particularly if you're a Newcastle manager. If you get beat four, it's a thrashing. >> So that when it's 3-0, you're like fingers crossed like you know Man City or if you're playing, you're in that position. >> So Newcastle took a whooping the other night against commentary. >> They did. Just like you said, looking at the players that Palace have lost over the last couple of seasons, it's it's such a shame because, you know, Palace were doing such great things under Glasg. Unfortunately, when these moments go and they pass because, you know, the investment can't match the ambitions, etc. And of course, there is a food chain in the Premier League. Unfortunately, in football, there is. Yep. >> People want to move on, etc. >> The glass ceiling could hold it. It's such it's a shame but right now what palace need to do is dig deep >> but let me tell you I think if I was Steve Parish were on the board I think this year is a year to consolidate right a little bit >> correct >> uh losing a great manager like Glasnner and he was a great manager for Crystal Palace probably the greatest manager for Crystal Palace um and um but what worries me is the European campaign on the back of a squad that looks short for the Premier League right so that let's just say that the The squad for the Premier League looks weaker particularly at the back. Right. Okay. [snorts] Listen to this run of games. So in four days time they got Baziktes, right? Then three days after they got Liverpool at home, >> Liverpool >> uh sorry Newcastle. >> Then you got four days, right? And then you got Fulham in the cup. Carling cup. Carling cup. Not >> the EFL cup. >> EFL cup. >> Carab. >> Then three days after that you got Spurs. Then five days after that away. Then five days later you got Hoffenheim at home which won't be used. Then you got three days after that you got Liverpool at home. [snorts] So what I'm saying is you got a team that is is struggling to like get results in the Premier League and and well obviously they got result last week but the performances have been like oh not all right and that confidence spreads through the group and then you got a run of games like that really really difficult. >> Can Palace win the Europa League? I >> I would say no chance. >> Okay. So do they? >> No. No. That's a bit unfair. I don't want to say that a very slim chance. >> So, do they concentrate on the Premier League then to make sure that their players are fit and strong for that? >> If I was say that I would definitely have to be looking at that whereas last year I think uh Oliver had the luxury perhaps to to focus on the Conference Cup a little bit and uh the league could take a second secondary look at that because obviously they were so they were so competent in the league. Their points are in the bag. So this time round Sage is going to have to concentrate very much on the league. Are you sticking with him? >> Yeah. Yeah. I think he has to he has to get to Liverpool um with at least two maybe three stroke wins there. Um >> where are those wins coming from for you? >> Newcastle at home. Newcastle struggling. >> Newcastle. Yeah, they that looked a good time to play them. Fulham. Oh, I see yesterday were much much better. Fulham, that would be a tough game, but you could like Palace could win there. That would be two of them. Hoffenheim, you'd like to think they can win that one. >> Spurs away. Spurs have to win. >> Well, there's again, you know, when you look at them all potentially, bazict, okay, I think that's really, really difficult on the back of today. The other games, they're all winnable until you get to Liverpool. So, as I say, three wins, if you can get three wins, I think probably you'd accept two wins, but if they were league wins, but we'll see. >> Uh, right, let's go to the phone lines. 03717234. Will's a Palace fan. He joins us. Good evening, Will. >> Good evening. How are we? >> Uh, yeah, very well indeed. this horrible fixture list you've got coming. Um >> yeah, I know. >> It comes thick and fast, doesn't it? >> Yeah, it does. And I mean, um I mean, I heard what Pods was saying there. For me, Sage has to go. Um I was expecting a club statement by now already. >> Um it's just the way we've started. We haven't played well in most games. Leads, I think, was the only game that we t kind of took um a good performance out of with a nil nil. Um but ever since then, it's just gone downhill really. in that performance in Leon conceding in the first 10 minutes then conceded three and nine today. I think he's lost the dressing room and I think he's got to go. >> I mean, you know, I'm sure will on the back of that uh result today. Emotions are going to be running high, not just with the Palace fans, but in that dressing room as well. You know, if you're a player, that's the last thing you you you know, you want to you want to have. Forget about the manager as a player. You just don't want that hanging over you. >> Yeah. [snorts] >> So, you know, he has got issues in there. um you know and the saw thing that worries me a little bit you know where he is. So I think [clears throat] I still think though will at this particular time where we are um and there's plenty let's be honest there's plenty of time to to turn around the situation if you need to but I think he he deserves three definitely a little run of games yet. Yeah, I mean it's even like the um today that the players didn't go over to clap the fans really. It was only Lur and Walton and [clears throat] Sage didn't really bother going over and I think there's got to be, you know, you got to take some responsibility. I know he's come out and said it, but you know, go to the fans >> when that happens is a problem in it. That's a big >> Yeah. For me, you you've got to clap the fans that go week in week out. You have to go over and don't don't hide or anything because we're going to be there every step of the way with them. >> Yeah. >> So, the fact that they've done that really doesn't shine a good light on the players or the manager. Yeah, I remember um particularly when I was at Newcastle, that was always uh something that we we we more or less was like part of our regime, whatever the result, you know, you you must go and see the fans because, you know, they've paid good money to come and see you regardless of the result. And that that's a given that one. So, I'm disappointed to hear that. But it does happen on occasion and obviously today, wow, what a result. I mean, >> well, if you if you was to get him out, who would you have in? >> Eddie House. >> I was going to say Eddie. I think yeah, I think you've got enough to get Eddie there. I really do. Um so well hopefully Sage can turn it around, but if he doesn't then I think Eddie's the one to go to. >> And maybe that's why we'll want it done now because Eddie's available because there's going to be plenty of clubs that could have changed their managers in in short space of time. Let's go to Steve as well as a Palace fan. Evening Steve. >> Good evening, guys. >> Are you standing by your man? >> No, not at all. I was excited when he first came in. Um, obviously he won PSG close last season in the league. He won the French Cup and obviously we're a good cup side. Um, but he just does he's on the sideline. He just does not look bothered at all. It's like and and it's just a defeated man and yeah, I think it's now time for him to go >> odds. [snorts] Can you can you sell a case to keep him to Steve? Well, all I can say is I mean I think his style is very much like that stand back one as a manager rather than you know out on the sidelines pointing fingers and inspiring. He isn't that type. I think he is that type to sort of stand back, watch the game, try and take it in. So I would defend him a little bit on his actions on the sideline. >> I don't like that. >> I know but it's, you know, but that's sometimes our managers are. So you know >> I want my managers on the side and having a scuff. >> Yeah. you know, I'd like to see some emotion at some point obviously. I mean, I would say that where's performances of the team is the worry. I mean, that's more of a worry to me that um in all of the games Palace have played this year that as you say, probably without the exception of the lead's game, they haven't really been at their anywhere near Oliver's team. And I think that is a worry. Remember, this is a manager who's coming to a whole new level. Forget about the French league, you know. I'm not, you know, I don't want to be disrespect to it, but it is not the Premier League. It's not is the intensity the the the level of performance uh and physical performance of your team is a way higher level than in France. And I think he's finding that out. >> Well, the irony is we're going to be hearing from the Crystal Palace former manager Oliver Glazner in a moment and Art of the back of that 1- nil defeat. I mean, Glasnner at Forest hasn't pulled any trees up, does he? I mean, they ain't scored a goal at home. Is that correct? >> Yeah. >> He he blamed losing the Palace on Karma, didn't he? >> He said, "My players did everything they could." Well, that was just karma for me.
