"WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO BE?" Sean Dyche EXPLAINS what Manchester United NEED under Michael Carrick!
talkSPORT discusses Manchester United's identity crisis, Sean Dyche's verdict on Carrick's side, plus Coventry City, running and two-striker football
The video starts with Manchester United before their trip to Atletico Madrid, as Rio Ferdinand says United lack identity and Sean Dyche argues they are roughly where they should be. Later Dion Dublin praises Coventry City and Bobby Thomas, and predicts a return of 4-4-2 and big strikers.
- Manchester United lack a clear identity and do not know what kind of team they are. — They are either a transitional side that wins from a low or mid block on the counter, or a side that dominates possession and suffocates opponents; they are not the latter, so they must decide what they are and stick to it.
- Manchester United are roughly where they should be right now. — Last season's lack of extra games helped them, while this season they have European football; player for player they are not as good as Arsenal, City and the teams above them.
- It is too early to judge United after six games, though he expected a better start. — Carrick simplified things last season, changed the mood and led a strong finish, which raised expectations; but it is only six games and judgments should be consistent.
- United need more tempo and aggression. — Aggression is not just fighting; it is in passing, body language and competitive edge. Top teams fire passes in and make the receiver think, while United look slow and methodical.
- If United will not be dynamic in possession, they must be dynamic in transition. — Passing tempo decides whether opponents press; if they are not dynamic in either phase and lack running as glue, the team will struggle as it is now.
- United are not a million miles away from being better, but they have work to do; tonight at Atletico is a hindrance rather than a help. — Simeone's teams almost always come out on fire and run and fight relentlessly, making this a bad match for United at this moment.
- Coventry City's win last night was excellent, built on energy and willingness to do the ugly work. — Frank set them up as if it was their home ground and they had to win, their pressing and finishing were better, and the home crowd gave them energy.
- Bobby Thomas has progressed more than he expected, and his key defensive clearances can be as important as goals. — Dublin had Thomas as a young player at Burnley and thought he would be a player but not this good; Thomas made a huge clearance against Forest and did it again last night, which can be worth points.
- United's biggest question is whether the players will put in the hard yards, not whether they are bad players. — If you are not as good on paper, you have to outrun the opponent and create an extra man physically; the first game of the season was the time to lay down that marker.
- 4-4-2 and big strikers will come back. — Rangers and other teams are already using two up front, and the World Cup showed a version of it, so this style is becoming relevant again.

Five Premier League teams in Champions League action over the next two nights with all five ties brought to you live of course on Talk Sport. Some blockbuster games in there as well as PSG travel to City. Looking forward to that one. I'll bet that one as well. >> Former manager Pep Guardiola will be there in attendance, but we're going to focus on the game of the night tonight. A struggling United have headed out to Madrid to take on Diego Simeone and Atletico. That is no mean task. Believe me, they will run about. They're organized. I'll tell you they're a good good side. Man United legend Real Ferdinand Rio was speaking in his podcast Real Presents over the weekend and he was discussing United's lack of identity. >> And I think we're we're a team that looks a little bit stuck in in not knowing what they are at the moment. Like I think we are a counterattacking team. Our forwards and our attacking players like Bruno, etc. They're not about keeping possession for large periods. They're about we get an opportunity, we have a go, right? And then we regroup, but we're not about maintaining possession. So, we're either going to be a transitional team to win games on the counter like we did last season from a low from a mid block or we're going to have to be a team that dominates possession and suffocates the life out of teams and we're not that. >> So, I think we really need to pin ourselves to what we are and and and stay with that. >> That's interesting. For more on Rio's thoughts, head to his YouTube channel, Rio presents a forms a stark contrast to last season. But they haven't changed their side that much. Where are you with Manchester United before you answer that I said you think earlier? I don't know was on here or off here. I actually think United are where they are at this moment in time is kind of roughly where they should be. I know they had a good season last year. I certainly think the lack of games, extra games helped them. I think they only played 40 which was remarkable out obviously competitions and I looked at them I thought yeah but I look at them this year I think with European football as well >> I I just don't think I think it's relatively simple is I don't think their team >> is as good as Arsenal and City and and the player for player and then the teams that are above them and they're kind of roughly okay I understand the level of performance wasn't particularly good at the weekend but I I think they're roughly where they are. >> I think I think look, it's from the outside looking in, mate. But I think when you go in last season as Carrick, it was it was that kind of disgruntled feeling before he went in with the last manager and the tactics and everything to simplify it, bed him down, get him going again was quite an easy, not easy to win, that's the different thing, winning games, you know that. But easy to change the vibe and the feel and the fan direction and all that. >> And they finished really strong, didn't they? And you had some good performers who came back in. Magguire came. He had a really strong finish to the season. I was surprised he didn't go to the World Cup just form. Yeah. Yeah. Um >> now if you get I mean when you go through a preseason going to the season the the story changes though, don't it? You know, so then because of their strong finish, Man United comes back to Man United again, I think, from a fan view and the pundits and goes, "Well, go on then." Including me, but I thought they'd have a much better start than they have done. It still is only a start because it's not fair to talk about the start when someone's flying or struggling. You have to you have to measure it the same because they're only six games in. >> I don't have him going to these tonight at I must say cuz I think that's not a good game from that this moment. I think I think Rio's on something there, you know, because where are they, you know, what are they going to be? Because their physical stats are very low, which suggests that you're like you said, either a well, it suggests you're a counterattacking side or you're a side that's very open and keep the ball for fun. I think they're stuck between the two. You know, which players are going to do which job? >> Um, I I would personally like to see a bit more tempo in there, both in and out of possession. You know, people when when you talk about aggression, people think you're talking about fighting. Be aggressive when you're passing. Be aggressive with your body language. Be aggressive with your competitive edge. You know what I mean? It doesn't the days of aggression. Now, we are we're member. >> Yeah. So, now it's about your, you know, dynamic aggression. Now, how you know, especially, >> you know, you see people passing well, you know, Ali, you know, top, they pass it with. Yeah. They fire it. Yeah. >> And they ask a question as a person receiving the ball. >> Fire and that brings tempo. >> Correct. >> And that brings a fluid play. >> Correct. And then they just don't look like it looks all a bit slow and a bit methodical. You know what I mean? And and you're sure right Sean if I sent it back a full and they take it they take another touch and then they roll it to somebody that indic that that determines the tempo of their team >> and the opposition think I'll have a little grub on that you know with Brighton early they thought we'll go and have a sniff on that. Let's go and you know it's going whereas if you're going bang bang I'm tell you know the opposition they can't get this. They look and they go oh what's the point? Yeah. and that that stops them pressing. So the the the dynamic in their play just their passing play and then if you're not going to be dynamic in that and you are going to go sort of that mid to low block then you got to be dynamic on transition. >> You know you can't have it always. If you're not dynamic on either then what happens is what is happening and then if you haven't got the glue to hold it together which is running then it's not going to work out that well. So I think but I don't think you know what it's like Ali right when we talk about the I don't think they're a million miles on the other hand. >> Do you know what I I mean, I'm not about winning it or anything like that, but I mean, from being better, from from getting results. I don't for a million miles away, but they they've got some work to do, I think. Tonight, tonight is a hindrance rather than help. I think >> Simeon teams, you know, like I'll be I'll be amazed if they don't come out on fire, especially teams. Honestly, gosh, I've seen them there and I've seen them on these shores, right? They run. >> Do you know what Bradley run? >> I used to love this. There was a time at Burnley, you know, they used to go, "Oh, he's like that Simeone." And I used to go, "God, you beauty." I was buzzing. I was I hope I am >> teams work their socks off, mate. >> Trip trips went there, you know. And he said the training there. He said, he said, I thought you were bad to me. And he said, I thought PCH was bad. He said, you go there and he said it's mayhem. Said it's absolute mayhem, you know, just like at it all the time getting players at it. >> I tell you my favorite Trippy story, you know, Mrs. Ater. I was I was doing a Newcastle game Newcastle game >> and Trippy had been brilliant. Yeah, he'd been great. But I think I can't remember who it was was playing up front. It might have been Anthony Gordon. >> Yeah. >> 10 minutes ago and it was between the two of them and I thought yeah man a match. I said I've got to give a man a match. I gave you Anthony Gordon. And then Trippia went on to have the best 10 minutes here. Right. But I' given the man a match and the Saturday night I'm having a pint in London and I think Newcastle boys must been in London and I'd never met him before. Brilliant. >> So he comes up he taps me in the shoulder. I turns around. He says Ally he said he threw his hand out. He says, "I'm Kieran Trippier. I very nearly won your man in a match." >> Such a trip. >> OH, WHAT A LINE. Joining us now live in the studio as a man cemented himself as a legend in the com history books as a club's all-time top scorer. Also, Premier League one of Manchester is of course Dion Dublin. >> Hey J, how are you? >> Hey, we're brilliant mate. How are you? You look great. >> Feel great. Feel great. Loving life and enjoying life. >> Good for you. Busy as ever. >> Yeah, busy as ever. Walking around houses, you know, in studios and stuff. DO YOU LOVE IT? >> I LOVE IT. IT'S NOW BEEN, IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT, Ch 11 years now. >> That's mate. >> 11 years I've been doing Under the Hammer. >> It's crazy. >> I'm going to see some tonight. >> I remember seeing you when you you first started ago. >> I WATCH IT. >> YEAH. YEAH. >> I DO. AND YOU'RE the reason I watch it. My misses loves it as well. >> IF SOMEBODY SAID TO ME 15 years ago, do you know what you'll be doing all? You'll be sitting watching Home Under. >> Shut up. >> But good fun, eh? >> It is good fun. And you get to go around the country. Listen, there's times when you're doing the interview and you're chatting to them and you you do you do on the odd occasion I've had to say, "Listen, stop the camera. Stop the camera." It's not working. I say, "Hold it. Stop the camera." I say, "Hold it." >> That's not going to be five grand. >> The windows will cost you 10. The doors will cost you five. The roof's going to be 15. >> I got to be honest. I'VE DONE A COUPLE >> GOING to come up and run a board with my mushies there. >> I swear I swear I'm alive. I couldn't agree more. Right. cuz I do watch it as well. >> And I'm there and I've done a couple of hours and I'm GOING NO I'M GOING NO chance of you getting this done by >> 13 and a half quid LIKE BUT GENUINELY I I'll stop the cameras and I'll say listen you've got to say 40 50 grand you know if you come in at five you've done well just say 40 or 50 you know I think 40 Yeah. So you got to help them out sometimes. Sometimes they don't know sometimes it's their first time. You got to just help them out. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, this has got to be the only time there's been a link straight from the prices on homes under the hammer in Coventry City. But let's but let's let's do it. Dion, great result last night. >> Yeah, just just you know what and D will probably tell us both better. The the the energy well I don't know what Frank has said, but the energy and the the willingness to do all the horrible stuff, the closing down just was was better. I mean the finishing were great. It was great and Botman was outstanding. Let's get it right. It was golden night golden night. But I just think the way that Frank set them up as if to say this is our home ground. I mean the noise in the stadium and I you know I've not experienced the um the CBS but I know what those fans are like and when they're on it they're on it and I think they have to do that at home alley. But that's amazing. We we're talking about and you would think it'd be a prerequisite, right? But we are now sitting saying we're loving the energy, you know, look at them. They're running about it's fantastic. >> I know. That should be a given. >> Yeah. But yeah, but it's >> it's a m Well, weirdly I've been questioning about that. Don't forget Sean D. All they do is run around. It's not a bad start. >> Yeah, it's not a bad start at all. >> But you know what? I think he's done great. You know, the biggest thing that you've got to keep belief in your players in the Premier League when you first go back in there >> is is that you got to keep running. Yeah. >> You got to keep running. You know, you got to keep working. You got to run through the tough times. But I was saying to Ali just off air before you come in. Do you know what? You know, as a my manager's view, if you like, Bobby Thomas, right, I had him at Burnley as a young kid. I always thought he was going to be a player, but he's done better than I thought, you know, but by progressing. Fair play to him. I saw him at Forest made a massive clearance, a hugely important clearance for him to win that game. And he did it again last night. So that could go from six points to even two points. >> Yeah. and and there there that can be as vital as a turning point in a game as it can scoring a goal. >> And I think people I think people don't a lot of people don't realize that if you do that first the the the natural talent that you have as a team just comes out. You you have to do that first. You can't go and stroll around the pitch. We have had players that you've you've carried. We've had players that you've carried you know that don't want to make the challenges and you know do all that. We don't mind that but you can't do it now. >> Well well look at Manu. >> Yeah. your one another one of your ex club I know we chat further on them but the biggest question mark and no one's been saying well no one I've seen has been saying they're terrible players have gone >> like questioning are they going to put in the hard yards >> what was the stat you come out with the last running game >> I know they played a hole at first >> first game of the season right lay down a marker all you expect you go there and you go right let's run all over show them we're the real deal and they I think it was like 102k or whatever they 116 or whatever 106 106 as a player extra yard. You thought you've got an extra man physically you've got an extra man and we used to try and do that at Burnley back in the day. We used to pride ourselves in going like we'll run harder than them. >> Correct. >> And by the way I must mean you're going to win the course if you start but you can stay in it. You can stay in it to win it. And that's what Frank he's kept working >> and if you're not if you're not on paper if you're not >> as good as or better than the team then what can you do that makes you better or gives you a chance? Dan, there's nothing wrong with being honest about a lot of fans. Why aren't we playing this way and that? >> Listen to us old hats. LISTEN TO US OLD MEN. >> I TELL YOU WHAT, I TELL YOU WHAT, old school is it's never been more relevant. >> I tell you what's going to come back around here and I've been saying this for the last couple years. 442 is going to come back around and big strikers. >> Oh, that'd be nice. >> I'm telling you, 442 and big strikers are going to come and it's going to record. I'm going to tell you now. >> We saw it in the last couple games. I'll tell you it now. Rangers got two boys up front. the boy Nadiri who just made his debut if I want say Czech Republic sign from Germany but check the big boy Kelsey >> and that's what they are >> and it's not there's nothing wrong with get the ball forward hold in one short one long >> play with two strikes is going to be back round soon I'm telling well well splended a version of it the world cup won the world cup of course >> well you covered it more or less a woman out possession 442ish I'm not saying you know not rigid >> man you used to be fluid 442 you know what I mean >> and commentary as well when I was there with Dan Hookie Well, you're all conc. >> Yeah, you're all conceded to see them combine. You were buzzing, weren't you? You used to think that's fant. I'm telling you, it's coming back around. That's you. >> Me and me and Alli halfing good nick as well. So we, you know, has a chance. I think you'll need to go in that drop in that 10 though. >> He might be dick turpin stumbling the liver. >> Dion, I've got to say to you now, as energy bills continue to rise, you are sharing your cheap and easy tips to help save households a bigger burn money and their energy bills. by the way. >> Yeah. >> See my energy bills my I swear to God if she start I'm not >> I'm telling you I'm I'm just stopping short of telling the missions to turn the heating off and put logs on the fire. >> I'm not quite there yet but I'm nearly there. >> I've done all right cuz them payoffs work out. You know they were all right. So I'm being anyway. >> Tell us what's happening mate. >> No listen I've linked up with um with um with Eon Next uh with their 5.5 campaign. It's basically uh I've done this before for Ion because I think the campaign's very good. Yeah. >> It's dark in the mornings now. It's getting colder and what and you've mentioned it there. The energy bills are crazy and people are finding it difficult just for normal life. Absolutely. And what all I am doing is is just helping them with little tips that you can do in the house. For instance, changing normal bulbs to LED bulbs. That's going to save you a few quid. Bleed your radiators, stuff like that. Check for I don't know the draft underneath your door. It's cold outside. Don't let it come in your house. It's just very basic. You're trying to heat your house up. Don't let it go underneath the door or out the windows. Draft excluders. It sounds stupid, but all these little things can save you a few quid. And everybody needs to save a few quid. So, if you can do those, check your boiler, all that kind of stuff. Get those things done. You will save a fiverr here and a fiverr there. And it all mounts up. You could Yeah. And at the end of the year, you could be saving, you know, two, three, 400 quid, which is meals on the table. >> That's what it's all about. That's all I'm here to do. >> Absolutely. D, it's brilliant to see you, mate. As always, keep up the good work. >> Love it. >> Great to see you with you were with Gabby the other day, I believe. >> I was with Gabby. Yeah, the other day. >> It's his birthday today. >> It's his birthday, is he? >> He's 40 today. >> Is he, mate? No chance. >> I know, mate. >> TIME FLIES to be fair. >> I retired at 39, so he's doing well. paper on this was >> New York TIMES 6,000 PAPER. >> HE'S GOT A 52 year old head. That's great to see you >> and you guys. Thanks for having me. Cheers.
