Jason Cundy & Jamie O'Hara's LIVELY CLASH with Open Goal after Celtic's DEFEAT to Celta Vigo!
talkSPORT studio clash: Celtic's European defeat sparks debate over Scottish football and Premier League money
The show reacts to Celtic's defeat to Celta Vigo and turns into a heated debate between the Open Goal guests and the talkSPORT hosts over Scottish football's finances, structure, youth drain and managerial future. The argument widens to whether the Premier League has become a de facto Super League and lacks soul, plus where Celtic and Rangers really stand.
- English pundits were hypocritical to oppose the Super League because the Premier League's financial power already makes it a de facto Super League, and that imbalance is a disgrace. — He points to Bournemouth beating AC Milan as proof that Premier League money is distorting European competition.
- The Premier League has become soulless and a tourist league, while the Championship is proper football. — He says ordinary diehard English fans are being priced out and the stadiums are filled with corporate and tourist fans.
- The Scottish guests are making up their crowd percentages and sound like bitter Scots. — He challenges them to produce stats or a source and says they have no data to back up the numbers.
- Celtic cannot simply blame money because there are teams in the Europa League with fewer resources who are doing better. — He points out that Celtic are 35th in the Europa League, so the problem is not only financial.
- Celtic's problems are at board level; the manager should never have been reappointed and the club must change from the top. — He acknowledges the manager won the league but says change was needed then and the hierarchy has let problems drag on.
- Scottish clubs have regressed in Europe quickly and drastically. — He says the last two seasons have been embarrassing, whereas Celtic once took Bayern to extra time and Rangers reached a Europa League final.
- Scotland lacks a homegrown-talent quota, so its best 15- to 17-year-olds are taken by English clubs before Scotland can benefit. — He cites Chelsea reportedly paying a Hearts youngster £8,000 a week while Hearts' top earner is on about £10,000 a week.
- Celtic should change the manager now if they want to do anything in Europe this season. — He argues that losing twice at home in Europe is unacceptable regardless of their league position.
- The manager should never have been reappointed, but it is very hard to sack him when the team is four points clear at the top of the league. — He argues that their league position makes an immediate change complicated and that domestic results cannot be ignored.
- It is deluded to think Celtic or Rangers could come into the Premier League and win the title within five years. — He points out that even Liverpool have only won two Premier League titles, showing how hard the league is to win.

RIGHT. >> It's been a bad night, right, J? It has. It's been a bad night. And we know for a Celtic point of view and Scottish football Europe, it isn't good enough now. And that's what's good about our country and your people that we're honest. But when we look at you lot, >> you are basically hypocrites because when the Super League came up, you all burst out greeting as pundits. This isn't allowed to happen. Your league, the Premier League is basically the Super League is a disgrace. Wait a minute. >> He's a super league. >> Exactly. And it needs to change. >> It has Bournemouth beating AC Milan. It's a disgrace. What? >> But it's not going to last. It's not going to last cuz the start of it manet already been cut out and it's going to come all the way down the league. These are getting caught. By the way, do you know this? Coventry, app, and whoever other team that came up. >> App spent 200 million in the summer. >> It's good. Spend that. >> Do you know WHAT ANDY? SO, HOLD ON. ABS 200 million Bayern Munich SPENT SEE VIOLIN Bayern Munich spent less than that switch this is what I'm saying and listen we're honest as I said but you no no I'm I'm I'm firmly on his side about this English English football >> Premier League is soulless soulless championship proper football >> proper SOULLESS ENGLISH. >> ENGLISH. ENGLISH FANS. ENGLISH FANS. >> ENGLAND. Brilliant fans. Brilliant. >> They're the hardworking, diehard English fans. They can't go to the Premier League anymore. They can't. No, they can't. >> Brilliant. >> It's a tourist league. >> Honestly, what's your biggest derby? What's your biggest derby in England? >> Spurs for me. >> Spurs and who? >> Chelsea for Chelsea. >> 10%'s corporate, 20% hospital. 20% of South Korea fans cause a human son. And then you get 15% die hard fans. >> THEY'RE DONE. THEY'RE DONE. >> BY the way, Chelsea don't really know what's going on. Hold on. >> I don't know what's going ON HERE. YOU'VE COME ON DEFENSE. >> NO, I KNOW. But lad, you're kind of embarrassing yourselves a little bit cuz you just sound like bitter Scots. >> No, no, no, >> no, no. You really do. >> England England fans are brilliant. Championship down. Brilliant. >> Where you getting your numbers from? >> What do you mean? >> What do you mean? >> No. Just what numbers? >> So, you're not So, you're not a tourist league. >> No, no, but where you get your numbers from? Where's I've got a computer here. I'll have I'll have a look about. You know, >> get your sheet of paper, mind. Where'd you get the Where'd you get the numbers from? >> What? Number number five. Number four. Where? A sheet of paper. >> They're gone. You get You are getting the answers any >> No. No. What what what I'm saying is right. What I'm saying is that you make numbers up. You don't you got no stats to back it up. There's no there's no there's no website. You just see no stats. >> I've scored more goals at Stford Bridge. Yeah. You pick a Chelsea. >> It's a Chelsea. >> I played one game at St. >> One game. >> How many How many goals did you play at Stford Bridge? >> One game and you scored one goal. Right. Good result there. I did score. I did score one. You won goal. >> I did. I scored a couple. One's one in one in one. >> No. Seriously though, Slening with Celtic because you're 35th in the Europa League, mate. >> No, honestly. >> Yeah. You can't you can't And all jokes aside, right, Celtic are a massive football club. >> Yeah. >> And you say you can't compete and there's money and all that kind of All right, whatever. But there are teams in this league who ain't got money as well who are doing way better than >> I totally agree when it comes down to Europa League we kind of we can make excuses financially cuz the teams are getting beat probably only spending what you look at for example last or you're looking at bord glimp you're looking at Viking who beat Bayern Munich dribbun Dortmund um get beat by bord so you're looking at that we kind of keep seeing finances there's pro huge problems at Celtic higher higher up should never have been reappointed he won the league but change had to happen then it's been going on and going on so things at Celtic have to change for the top because I mean what's going on there is no exception is it? >> No listen we love you guys. Well we do we we we we love England. We love English fans but we are passionate about football. No no we are but we're passionate about Scottish football and we've said it for for the last two three season. >> But how could but it's never going to change. >> Okay. How is it going to change? Because the championship >> the money in the championship I think it's like the fifth most most watched league in Europe. No, we can't riches or something like that. >> But we cannot compare to England. It's pointless as even compare England. Your finances nearly can >> but but you just mentioned bodimp not the glimp >> very good teams but in terms of resources and finances they don't compare size of clubs history. They don't compare Rangers and Celtic but >> Lil Good team I keep I keep hearing this about we keep on hearing about financial fair play. It doesn't even happen in England. You can spend whatever you want. See user spent I think it's mean about four billion that's melon all the other top leagues are spent together >> bothered about what's going on in England but you are doing it >> no no of course I say that we look at ourselves but I'm having got look at yourself >> I'm looking at the bigger picture it's having a a massive effect in all these clubs you're looking at Ajax now know the same team AC Milan know the same team they cannot compete with a Premier League I just told you a team that came up for the championship >> I ain't asking YOU TO COMPETE WITH A PREMIER LEAGUE YOU'RE 35TH in Europa League >> I've already said CELTICS PROBLEM >> RANGERS AIN'T EVEN IN IT >> I'M TALKING about fol I've already said the problems with Celtic okay don't play that violin whatever you do it's true >> BUT IT'S NOT >> 35 PREMIER LEAGUE TEAMS in Europe >> I know but I've already said Celtics's problems I've said that but we're looking for a bigger picture Ufa now must come in and have a look at your league what you are spending compared to the rest of Europe it's disgusting absolutely disgusting disgusting >> what do you mean it's like it's like it's like the Premier League is like Harrods right Scottish football it's like Morrison's Good shot. >> Morrison's going to go more little. >> Nah, it's not over. >> What's a co-op? >> Oh, it's not badge. >> Is it? >> But you said you said can never >> Scotland's quicky mark. >> You said Scotland can never claw that back. And listen, as we said, Scottish football in Europe this season, last season embarrassing. Two year ago, you talk about the aggression. Two years ago, Celtic played Bayern Munich in a knockout knockout phase game and took them to two minutes extra time. Five years ago, Rangers got to Europa final. The degression's actually been really quickly, but drastically bad. >> Why? Why? >> I feel as if they're miles behind in finances, but they're also miles behind in terms of way of thinking. I mean, Celtic for a long period of time, didn't have a director of football, didn't have a technical director, didn't have a head of recruitment. What big club operates like that? >> None. It's as simple as that. >> To be fair, Man United So I I mean the regression in Celtic over the last two three years has been w >> you've been a recent player right you played up there right what >> is it that bad >> no >> I don't I think the quality is all right but the performances when you come up against decent size in Europe you just get you just get gut what do you think about it then for yourself from England looking at that for yourself why do you think it is >> well obviously money >> obviously But I I just wonder what the infrastructure is like about bringing young players through because you look at across Europe some of the smaller nations they seem to be I mean Croatia right I don't know what their finances are in in the Croatian football but they produce players >> you know I'm just wondering where you know and listen they they got to world cup finals >> but that's a big argument right then obviously young players coming through but if you look to Ben do who left Celty at 16 bmouth Europ Milan and then Billy Gilmore left to go to Chelse at 16. So better younger players are getting taken away that's still that's not to say that there still should be younger players coming through but for that >> but I I completely agree because that's the argument. So the SFA tried to change that just now. So when you look at we talked about your bodimps and your Belgiums and your Switzerland so similar size nations to Scotland incomparable to your England, France, Spain all these >> Yeah. but we're talking about the next generation of young players that come through. So, a losing players, losing players to England is obviously extremely difficult, but b Scotland don't have a quarter for homegrown talent. So, when you can't make up the money in terms of the TV money, >> a lot of these nations like Switzerland and Belgium and Sweden and Norway because they play so many homegrown talent and they have to, it's a rule within their governing body, they end up selling so many of their young players for for big money, but we're actually losing them at 15, 16, 17. We can't bridge the gap in terms of finances. We are homegrown talent because a >> surv domestic football as well as the national team. >> But but I'm talking about the like on the international stage that's not a bad thing. If the best crop of players end up coming down to themies in in the Premier League and have the you know that should help Scott the first team >> only a couple of them that's actually been like a Gilmore or a bend. There's a hell of a lot of them that's came down and then went down the line. >> So for for and again we're not using this as an England the money but one of Hartsy's biggest young talents who they think's one of the best that's coming through. Chelsea bought him last year and apparently he's getting 8,000 a week. How can Scotland compete with that? >> How can they keep a hold of their best 16y old talent when England and Chelsea are giving them eight grand a week at 18? Hearts highest earner will be on about 10 grand a week. Ah, and we need and these younger players, lads, they can't >> any good the younger players I think have to look at examples of like a John McInn who played a lot of games in Scotland. Andy Robertson played a lot of games in Scotland. I think they've got to look at them and play first team football before they come down to thesemies down south. I I think that's a better thing for them. >> In terms of obviously you've had a we dig at Scottish football. I notice you've got your new watch along show. What was it called? What's it called? >> The locking. >> The locking. Sports by lock. >> Where did you get that name from? >> What do you mean? It was just copy. >> It wasn't a choice. >> Whoever's made the decision just lock's been gone for a couple of years now. >> Yeah. Is it? Yeah. >> Didn't go far then. Did you watch along you're doing it now? >> We do it. >> We did. It's funny how you're on talk now. >> Of course. Brilliant show. Love it. Do you? >> I know. But as is as important though for Scotland and the we need to have to change because it can keep on happening. Rangers. But it >> is going to keep on happening. Th this cycle that we're looking at now in 10 years time, how is it going to change? How do you break the cycle? How's that? >> All right. Well, look, let's ask people if they want to get involved. You want to give us a call? Uh 03717234. We are still joined by the lads from Open Gold podcast, Slain Andy Holidayiday after slapped against Selta Viggo tonight. Before we get back into it though, can we see a bit of your watch along earlier? Special guests join you coins to help us. We're coming up against Kundara. Scottish football English football. How are we pulling them up? >> I'm telling you right now, you'll play keep the two of them. >> That's exactly what I'm thinking. I think I had about 14 gems in these team >> and that's double candy. >> Candy never played in Europe. I TELL YOU WHAT, I mean, Ki, I watched him two weeks ago. He had a brilliant taco on Stanley Matthews in the 50 cup. I saw that. He absolutely buried me. >> He did. He buried Jazz out of order that didn't me one of ours. >> Yeah, every a couple of times he phoned me with Chelsea tickets, right? If you're listening, >> you're blocked. >> Yeah. Bad. >> Blocked him. >> Kisty and come back. Didn't he didn't he try and play in the Premier League for a bit and he scored like four goals or something? He got bumped him back up to Scotland where he belongs. You know what I mean? Where it's like non-league, but he scored like 300 goals for Rangers. He's like, "Does it really matter?" >> You know, it's like doesn't count up there. >> By the way, he's earned a crush down here. Don't worry about that. >> I know. I was going to say I wanted to get him on. He was like, "Don't ask him about Scottish football." Quy don't give a monkeys. >> You have a question. >> Try and get >> Yeah, I nearly did. I nearly went to Celtic. >> Did you? >> Yeah. Nearly signed for Celtic nil. Why did you not go? >> Because probably. >> Yeah. No, I just didn't fancy going up. I don't know. Just didn't fancy it. >> Say if I bother instead >> after Spurs, >> what were you follow? >> Ever a chance of going up to Scotland >> and playing? >> No. >> No. In the interest of just no good enough to go. >> No. No. Just wasn't obviously wasn't good enough. Obviously were good enough. >> How many games did you play this week? >> I played I think 52 or something. You played one one game. My one sub appearance. What a what a sub appearance it was. Was it >> you played one game? >> Was that against Al? >> No, it was my but then obviously but bad injuries, mate. Really bad injuries. But how >> Oh, that old chest now. >> No, no, but how I've came back for that. >> Look at Look at you now. >> Look at me now. >> Absolutely flying. And >> well, you're doing all right, mate. >> How's the podcast going? Cuz you I mean, I've done the podcast a few years ago, right? Loved it. >> We went up there. They fed me chicken. >> Yeah. >> Chicken wings. What happened on the way home? Something will happen to you in the way home. >> Honestly, you nearly killed me. >> Where's Sai? >> He's Isco Braid at the He's training with Isco Braid the night. >> He's with Isco's bride. >> No, he's Do you call him Tesco's bride? >> What? He's with Isco's bride. What's he doing with Isco's bride? >> East Co. >> Isco. He's coaching the Nate. >> Coaching. >> He's coaching. What boom ball? >> Literally. >> What? Boom ball. Size coaching. They were one nil up last week and they had 0% possession bride. >> East goes bride's a taste. >> By the way, you you boys nearly killed me. >> What's he doing with the bride? >> On the way back to the airport, I had to pull over on the hard shoulder. My eyes were walked and my nose was running and I had to spit all the chicken up you gave. That was disgusting. >> They done it extra. They done it extra hot. >> I must open go this season has been absolutely incredible. Probably I took it to a whole new level. Obviously Andy's just retired, but he's >> former manager Steven Gerard. We interviewed him. The best interview I've ever done. It was an absolute. When you get this when you get up, mate. You're too good for this, pal. You're too good. >> Oh, I love it, mate. I love it. >> When you get this back up there, >> you can come up and we'll collab. >> You mean collab? You know what I think? YOU KNOW, LIKE get all YouTube. >> We'll collab YouTube. Texting me saying we got a collab tonight. We got a collab. Like, MATE, SHUT UP. >> NO, NO, NO. I know what I'm talking about. Steven Celtic and Bqualify for Europa League. Watch along. >> That's not going to happen, is it? Have you Sorry. Have you >> No, no. See if you get that table up. Celtic still in it. >> Andy, can I >> give me 10 minutes? >> I see that bit of paper. Andy drinks. Celtic honestly here. I think Celtic should change the manager now. If they wanted something this season in Europe, >> I don't think it should appoint them in the first place, but can you really sack him while he's four points clear at the top of the table? >> Regardless of the European results, >> it's no except it's no except getting beat twice at home. We got a Ranger fan wants to phone us up. He spoke to us. Let's go to Craig. He's Rangers. All right, Craig. >> Craigy, >> how's it going? >> I'm all right. Craigy, how are you? >> You all right? >> Andy Sheny, how's it going? >> How you doing? >> What's happening, mate? How you doing, mate? All >> right. Uh, not bad. Not bad.
