"LUCKY TO GET TOP 10!" This Spurs fan WARNS fans & club of OVERCONFIDENCE after Coventry win!
Spurs fans warn against overconfidence after Coventry win: Champions League is unrealistic and top 10 would be lucky
talkSPORT reacts to Tottenham's 3-1 win over Coventry and debates their season prospects. The panel credits James Maddison's star quality but sees gaps to Chelsea and Arsenal; callers split over Champions League and a top-four push, with the more sober view being that Spurs should aim for the top 10 or top eight at best and not get carried away.
- Do not get carried away by the first win; this performance does not prove Spurs will go on a run, and they might not have won against a slightly better side — Some key players are still underperforming, they lacked control, and it is not a fortress, though it is a start
- Spurs controlled the game well, and James Maddison's star quality decided it; the key was getting the result and building on the Manchester United performance — Maddison scored a wonder goal, several players stepped up, and Spurs stayed in control after 1-1
- Spurs will not beat Chelsea because they never win this fixture — It has historically been a bad matchup for them
- Creative players like Maddison and Bruno Fernandes will give the ball away, and you have to let them take risks or the team becomes too safe — They try passes others would not, the reward is worth it, and Maddison gives Spurs improvisational creativity
- No realistic Spurs fan thinks they can get Champions League football; Manchester City, Arsenal, Brighton, Chelsea and Liverpool are ahead of them and Spurs cannot catch them — The top of the table is already clear, and Spurs' realistic target is the top 10 or top eight
- Spurs have no chance of Champions League football for two years; they are not good enough and their defensive shape and personnel are a mess — He criticised the poor defending and questioned playing a centre-back at right-back
- Spurs will get Champions League football, finish fourth and end above Arsenal this season — Maddison is back, Arsenal are washed, and the season is still early
- There is no way Spurs finish above Arsenal — Spurs were 16th and already 12 points behind Arsenal
- Spurs would be lucky to finish in the top 10; fans and the club must not get carried away by this win — Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth have been ahead of Spurs on and off the pitch in recent seasons, Aston Villa and others will improve, and Spurs will struggle to catch them
- The best Spurs can do is the top 10 or top eight; they will not get Champions League, and Finn's top-four talk was a joke — Given the strength of the top five and Spurs' current level, Champions League football is unrealistic

Shall we start with Tottenham? I think we should. Spurs have finally finally won their first league game of the season. So, good question. What's the best their fans can expect this season? Kulleski got in the way. IT'S HIT BY BEN DAVIS FROM THE EDGE OF THE AREA. PASS THE GOALKEEPER and Tottenham Hotspurs. Wait for a Premier LEAGUE VICTORY IS GOING TO BE OVER. >> I STILL think some of their top players aren't performing. That wasn't a performance that says to me that Spurs are going to go on a run. >> Let's not expect that they're going to charge up the lead. >> If we played somebody even of a slightly better standard, I don't think we would have won today. >> It is not a fortress. >> No, but it's a start. >> Good team, mate. >> Good team. Ohara Spurs finally have got their first league win of the season. They beat Coventry 3-1 at home last night. Also first start for James Madison in nearly 18 months and a comeback from injury for Kulashki as well. Their boss Roberto deserves spot at talk spot after the game. He said there were plenty of positives. >> It's important today because uh J Med is back. Dick Kuluseski another great news for us. Doanka played a good game. Marmush first game. uh the player who came inside in the second half from the bench they played very well. They they g they gave a big support uh great um spirit great reaction after their goal and uh many many good things. Listen the result of course the most important thing for Tottenham but um we should talk about the performance. What did you make of it? I mean, it was it was the perfect game for for Tottenham, I felt, and when they went 1 and when it come back to 1-1, you and I were talking and you said there's not one moment in that game where I thought Spurs would lose the game at 1-1. >> Yeah. No, I didn't. I just thought they were in control. Um, the performances have probably have been better in other games, Man United, i.e., but they didn't get the result. But this one, they played well and it's about star quality, right, Madison with that goal. I mean, >> great goal. >> Great goal. I mean, it's a wonder strike. I mean, >> it it can't go any more into the top corner. It's that good of a strike. >> Is it This is going to sound sad. Is it easy to do when the ball's coming across you swipe around? And I don't want to use the word easy cuz nothing about that easy, but you understand. >> Yeah, of course. Yeah, you just kind of kind of scripted it into that far top corner. But no, they they played well. Spurs, they did what they need to do. I thought commentary played their part. Um got themselves back into the game with Rodoni. >> But again, at no stage I feel Spurs would lose that. And I think a number of their players almost stepped up and were better. Thought coolers look quite sharp. Archie Gra thought had a really good game. Thought he played well. Yeah. Salanki led the line relatively well. But Madison's that star quality that you need, that player that can unlock something, do you know what I mean? He's got that little bit of something different that's not not the same. And and as Roberto Deserby said there, that's huge. Kulashki come off the bench. Now, I get it. It's going to take him some time before he gets back to the Kulleski. We know I mean he's been out for nearly over way over a year, nearly two years he's been out for. >> So, but he he's a he's a top player. But for Spurs, it was about the result. It was about can you put a performance in, build on the back of that United result where you played really well, but didn't get the three points, but you should have won the game. Can you build on that? And they did that. So now they're out the relegation zone, little bit more pressure. But I've got no doubts. Listen, I don't think they'll beat Chelsea. They never win that fixture. >> But there's confidence now in the squad. They're seeing players coming back. There's now kind of an identity to the way they want to play. >> When just going out to James Madison right now, when you've got a player like that, you know, when he gets the ball, you know, the crowd are a little bit on the edge of this like, oh, what can he do? Right. And he proved it with that wonderful goal. When you've got a player like that in your team and you're a teammate, I'm not comparing the two, but you play I'm not comparing the two, but there's there's a connection to it. You played at Spurs with Luka Modri. Yeah. >> And you knew that when he gets the ball, we can create and do things that other players around him can't necessarily. Bit like Madison in the Spurs side with regards to that. Does it make you as a footballer play better knowing you've got someone like that in your team? Are you on the edge of your seat if you like as a do you up your game? >> I mean Luca did it a different way. He wasn't that kind of creative kind of spot because a lot of the time he played left and then he was almost like a more of a a holding midfielder but still the quality he had was >> that way he was played at time holding midfield. Well, I think Harry played him a lot on the left with the Spurs and then he was then he held a little bit as well. So, um, but listen, yeah, the top draw, but if you talk about kind of that that creative spark, >> I remember playing with Danny Murphy at Charlton. >> And he was one of those players where knowing he was on the pitch, you go, okay, he's he can create something. Because players like him, Danny Murphy, Madison, yeah, they can do the basics, right? But the reason why they're they're so creative is they try things that other players just wouldn't try. So that there'll be passes where he probably shouldn't try because he may give the ball away, but he does and it pays off. And that's why a lot of the time when you look at creative players like Bruno Fernandez, like James Madison, these more creative type players, they probably give the ball away more than anyone because they're always trying stuff. But you you have to kind of back them to to try things because then it becomes a bit safe safe. But having Madison back cuz when you talk about creative and I like Connor Gallagher, but if you go in there with Ben, Connor Gallagher and Tali, it's all a bit sy. The moment you drop into James Madison now that will play off the cuff a little bit that can do something different. You get these type of rewards but his goal was wow >> it was fantastic. Okay the question we're going to ask you can dial in now if you want my switchboard is completely clear. So if you pick up the phone now you should be first. 03717234. You'll be answering this question where realistically can Spurs finish this season. So after that obviously football fans get carried away but I think I think Tottenham fans will be a little bit more realistic with how they think they get on. Look no Spurs fan. Let's work from the top down. No Spurs fan on the planet realistically thinks they're going to win the Prem. >> No. Not even realistically. They know they're not going to win the Prem. >> Okay. Uh realistically, percentage of Spurs fans think they're going to get top five Champions League football. >> No, not at all. >> None. >> Nope. >> Nope. >> I think you're wrong. >> No, none. But I think I think you're wrong. >> No, but I think it jumps massively to then conference league and Europa League. I think they think there's a chance. >> Will they all think now they can get top 10? >> Yeah, I think so. >> Uh they'll all think they can get top eight. >> Well, put it this way, right? This what this is where we're at right now. >> I know. So tight, >> right? They're currently 16th on six points. Seventh, which is Europe, right? Seventh is Europe, right? The Conference League. >> That is 10. Four points. >> It's nothing. >> Nothing. >> So, so you think every one of them will think European. Yeah. >> And none of them will think realistically no Champions League football for Tottenham. >> Well, the currently the top five are Man City, Arsenal, Brighton, Chelsea, Liverpool. They're not betting. And Brenford the sixth, lead seventh. They're not betting any of those. >> Okay. Tottenham fans, realistically, where can you finish? Benty thinks none of you hand on heart think you can get Champions League football. That's fair. Yeah. We'll take calls in just a moment. Swishboard is clear. If you dial, you'll be next. 03717234. One of the questions we're asking is how far can they go? Benty said earlier on, not one Spurs fan will think realistically they can get Champions League football. 03717234. Wayne is a Spurs fan joins us now. Wayo. >> Hello mate. >> How are sunshine? >> Yeah, not bad. We We haven't got a hop in hell of getting Champions League football for two years. >> For two years. Wow. Okay. Why not? two years. >> Why too? >> We're We're not good enough. We're No, it's it's there's a three-year plan at Tottenham. >> I went last night. Robertson, >> he he was shocking last night for us. We was Were we playing five at the back? Did we have wing backs? Did we play four at the back? Van Heckle >> was at right back at some stages. >> He's not a right back. >> No, >> he's very sluggish at center half for us. I thought the new fell that we got from Chelsea was outstanding for us. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> What do you make of Van Heckle? >> Van Heckle. I mean, listen, very funny, but um No, he's he's I don't understand, but I thought he's been a bit harsh about last night. I thought they were better. >> Okay. Uh but he said at least two years no champion. >> Yeah, I get I get that. >> Finn's a Spurs fan. Finnbar. >> Hello, mate. You all right? >> Are you a Finnb bar? >> Just Finn, mate. >> Just Finn. Okay. Uh what would you like to say, Justin? I reckon uh we're getting it this year. We're getting Champions League, mate. >> Okay, tell Benty he says you're not telling. >> What have you said? What signs you see, >> mate? Madders is back. That's the start of it. I don't know what this fell on about before. Van Hegel is quality. >> All right. >> So So you're thinking where you finishing this season? >> We're going to finish fourth. >> Give me the top three. >> Uh well, don't worry about them. We're in fourth, mate. >> No, I'm asking because I want to know who you're leaving out. So who's top three above you? Ah, well, City will win it if they don't get the points deducted. >> Yeah. >> Then it'll be Chelsea and Liverpool, then us in fourth. >> There's no way you're finishing above Arsenal. >> Huh? >> There's no way you're finishing above Arsenal. >> You, Mate, they are washed, >> mate. You're mate, you're 16th. >> They're what? Wait. Yeah, mate. We're only 10 game in or something, >> mate. You There's no There's no way on the planet you're finishing above Arsenal. >> Oh, mate. You watch. End the season. I have a bet with you. >> You have a bet. I'll take the bet. You You name the terms. 100 pound bet. >> All right, done. Can I have some? >> No, you can't, mate. >> All right. Okay. By the way, I've just got a text from everyone in the country. They want some of that bet as well. >> You're 12 You're 12 points behind Arsenal already. >> Yeah, there's plenty of games to go, my friend. >> Plenty more for you to lose. I don't know if you're joking. >> You must be. >> I'm not joking. >> You must be. >> Realistically, you're the only Spurs fan thinks you're going to finish above Arsenal on the planet. Realistically, >> well, the rest of them have got to start dreaming, mate. Well, that's what it is. Dreaming. >> It's never going to happen. >> It will happen. You wait. >> When was the last time you finished above Arsenal? >> Don't worry about that. >> Well, you got to beat Chelsea first at the weekend. That won't be easy. >> Oh, 3-0, mate. >> See? No, no, no. Madd is back. >> Next time you >> laughing when this gets clipped up, Maddis hatrick. 3-0. Cash. >> If you phone back again, will you do me a favor? Don't have a drink beforehand. >> Yeah. All right. Okay. All right. Good call for that. >> He's funny. >> Straight away. Fish of Arsenal. >> A I think we got time for one more. Marcus joins us now. Hello, Marcus. >> Hey, sorry. Can I have that bet as well, please? >> Of course you can. Of course you can. Big biggest bet ever. Go on. What do you want to say? >> Oh, well, I want to agree with the first Tottenham fan because he was asked right. Three years is about the limit because Tottenham fans, listen up, right? This isn't a dream. This is reality. We are so far behind the likes of Brighton, Brenford and Bournemouth as football clubs on and off the pitch and currently they sit above us and for the last three seasons they finished above us and the biggest joke is when Bournemouth sanki for 60 million quid right we took their top scorer for 60 million quid they finished above us that season and last season as well and Bournemouth Brenford and Brighton them threebs are better than top r in time we'd be lucky to get top 10 only if the likes of Hold and I switch drop out the top cuz I would imagine Villa will get better at some point. I don't know what's happening at Newcastle and United but Villa will get better and improve and we can't catch up to Brenford and Bournemouth let alone Villa Bill Manu and other teams. So Tottenham fans look it was a nice victory last night. Put a smile on the faces back but let's not get carried away. Let's take one game at a time please Tottenham fans let's not get carried away. Stop listening to Jamie O'Hara. I think he's giving us all false dreams and false ideas mate. >> Marcus very rational there. Very rational because he's good advice at the end. Yeah, honestly >> I I mean I do think Spurs will get top 10. I do think they'll get top eight. >> I think they could do, >> but that's probably it. >> They're not getting Champions League. >> Of course they're not getting Champions League. >> I think Finn was having a laugh. He must have been having >> I think that's just football fans. We sometimes believe in our club. Look at the amount of times I've said to I think we're going to win the league. >> No, but no, but things I just I just have one name. Yeah, I know. I know where you're coming from, but >> Yeah. Okay.
